Try before you buy: Not sure if this is your cup of tea? Get the free Starter Edition, which allows you to check out all of the game rules and play characters up to 3rd level. Have fun and come back when you're ready for more!

The city-state of Elethia has known a hundred years of peace and prosperity. Being a member in the Order of Guardians, sworn to protect the city, is now a safe and cushy job with nice hours and a good pension. You thought you had it so good until that damned Guild of Mages and its blasted experiments sends the entire city one thousand years back in time, right in the middle of the dark ages of the world. Now everyone looks to the Guardians to keep Elethia safe and find a way back to the future.

There Once Were Dragons is a roleplaying game of epic fantasy and high action designed with a focus on the simpler pleasures of life.

Streamlined d20-based mechanics for quick gameplay. If you’ve played d20 games before, you'll feel right at home. Make a character in less than 5 minutes then go out and save Elethia!

Or, don’t save Elethia at all! The built-in setting is entirely optional and can easily be replaced by another fantasy world of your own creation. You will still enjoy smooth action resolution, exciting combat and a huge variety of monsters to defeat.

The world is full of magic and all you have to do is find it and perhaps defeat a dragon or two guarding it. Each magical treasure comes with a random list of variants so you’ll never have to find the same thing twice.

Some experience required!

The game assumes a GM with at least a little experience with traditional roleplaying games and how to run them. I was originally intending to write a 100-page diatribe on what roleplaying games are and how to run the greatest campaign ever. Instead, I wrote 100 pages of glorious, kick-ass loot.

At 300+ pages, is there any chance of setting up a hardcover PoD?

Hello George,

I'm afraid that all of my products are digital-only and were not designed with print in mind. If you drop me an e-mail at george {AT}, we can further discuss your options.

Is this OGL?

Hello Ivan,

The game uses a unique d20-based system, so it's not OGL or compatible with other OGL games.

Got it. It reminds me a bit of Microlite20, but looks like it has a lot of interesting features.

Deally like the system, but one thing that seems to be "missing" (intentionally, I guess?) is a clear description of what the different damage types do (eldritch, spirit, acid, etc.). While there is a short section that gives hints as to what these types do, I was a little bit disappointed, that a description of damage types was in The Frontier but not here.
Is there any chance that something similiar will be added in the future?

Hello Yoseph!

You are right in that this change was intentional. There are several points at which There Once Were Dragons departs from The Frontier and the way damage types are handled is one of them. I wanted something a little bit more flexible than damage effects that are baked in for a particular type. So, in There Once Were Dragons all damage is handled in the same way, causing loss of Life points, but several items/spells will also have additional special effects in their description (a chance to stun, slow, cause armor damage etc.).

Now, if you really really want to add a special effect to all types of damage , I would use the following:
Eldritch and spirit damage cannot be blocked by most armor or shields.
Acid damage has a 40% chance of damaging 1 armor.
Cold damage has a 20% chance of slowing the target (Toughness DF 14 to resist).
Fire damage has a 30% chance of setting the target on fire (1d4).
Lightning damage has a 20% chance of stunning the...See more

Thanks for the quick reply, and I get that thing you were going for would be different than The Frontier.
I'm sure to give these effects a whirl in the next session

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
