The Road to Monsterberg

Codex Adventum: Silesia 1456

You've faced dragons. You've faced demons. You may have even faced Beholders. But have you ever stared down a robber knight?

The caves...

Welcome to the 15th Century! The year is 1456 and you are a weary traveler making your way from the war-torn Balkans back toward the relative security of the Holy Roman Empire. The only thing that stands in your way is the Duchy of Silesia: Three hundred miles of castles, fortified towns, and deep, spooky forests, drained by the waters of the mighty Oder river. This land of mystery and intrigue is a melting pot of three great cultures: German, Polish, and Czech, and the region is well known both for the strife between its many feuding lords, magnified by the interference of outside powers, and the great wealth of its many mines. The great Via Regia, the Kings Road, travels from the well protected Royal city of Krakow to the security of Breslau, the mighty Free City known to the Poles as Wroclaw and to the Czechs as Vertislav. But to get there you'll have to run the gauntlet of Robber knights, bandits, and the mysterious denizens of the misty woodlands.

The town of Nysa

The road to Monsterberg, Chapter 1 is a historically based adventure module, part of the Codex Adventum series, and designed for use with the Codex Martialis historical combat system. It is the first of a three chapter series, but can be played as a stand-alone adventure. The Road To Monsterberg is set in Central Europe in the year 1456. It comes with historical maps of the region, towns and castles, as well as detailed descriptions of towns, markets with equipment and prices, standardized and specific NPCs and both random and planned encounters. This module comes with 12 pre-generated characters which up to 6 can be chosen by your players, or you can use your own. It is intended for 4-7 characters of levels 4-6, made for a low-magic, historical setting. All that is needed to play this module is the Codex Martialis Quickstart rules, which can be purchased here for 3.99 or downloaded for free from the Codex Integrum website.

This is a fantastic module for a variety of reasons and a lot of different play styles could make good use of the content found here.

The Road to Monsterberg, Crypt of the Raubritter uses the Codex rulebook and the Codex superno magic system. If you haven’t already picked up those rulebooks, I highly suggest doing so. That being said, a creative GM could still make use of this module without needing to put too much elbow grease into making the DC’s or monsters fit their core system. Of course, using the system this module is designed for is recommended.

The Codex core rules and soprano magic system are designed for a low magic setting. If you’re running that kind of game, do yourself a favor and pick this book up. Writing interesting modules without the use of high magic elements can be difficult, but in this module, the developers prove that they are up for the challenge.

The setting is based on real-world 14th-century Europe. And as you explore the various twists...See more

The character sheets are blank. I was hoping to get the character stats for some playtesting.

Hi Richard, yes sorry about this, apparently DriveThru is stripping out the data from the editable PDF's we were using for Character sheets. We sent out an update to the module with a link where you can download the character PDFs directly from us. If you have any trouble getting that update or downloading the characters let us know here or on the Codex Integrum website.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
