Medieval: Real Medieval Life for RPGs

This is the first issue of a follow on magazine for the successful Orbis Mundi 2 series of books and this issue covers realistic Medieval Armour and Weaponry in considerably greater detail than was the case in Orbis Mundi 2 and The Marketplace.

This special Issue includes lots of information on practical archaeological research into the utility of period armour and weaponry which has been done by professional archaeologists in the last 20 years or so ... research which calls into question pretty much every assumption and rule regarding armour and weaponry in all existing Fantasy RPGs.

As a result, comprehensive optional/experimental rules to supplement the questionable existing rules are provided for D20 and D100 based game systems - and these include the real possibility (certainty) of weapons and armour breaking and the cost and requirements of maintenance (even modern reproduction weapons break - and they are often used much less intensively than would have been the case in the real Middle Ages ... while battle damage, and even general wear and tear, on armour was a significant real world problem).

A selection of 'real world' Historical Magic Weapons is also covered and there are extensive reviews of recent(ish) Fantasy RPGs ... Aquelarre and Fateforge.

So does this only cover the Arms & Armor aspects of OM2? Or do you plan on a series of updates in this format?

PUBLISHER
Special Issue #1 is Arms, Armour etc; Real World data on medieval weapons/armour effectiveness and battlefield usage from recent practical archaeological investigations; Experimental Rules for D100 and D20 based game systems to represent this; 'Historical' Magical Weapons from the Western European traditions; Reviews of Fateforge and Aquellare and some odds and sods.

Regular Issue #1, currently in preparation, will cover an entire medieval border region loosely (very!) based on the Welsh or Scottish Marches (or the borderlands between France and the Germanies) and includes a detailed gazetteer, a Monastic Hold, the Manor and Vill of Stangeatawic and some detailed encounter areas; review of at least one recent(ish) medieval or pseudo-medieval RPG and odds and sods (probably close to 120 pages)

Special Issue #2 (Third Quarter 2021, definitely, but probably sooner, depending on workload) covers Travelling ... Medieval Inns and Taverns, Caravanserais, the Cursus Publicus and its descendants...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
