Danger and glory await the bold...

In the common rooms of the great city’s countless inns, in the bathhouses of the merchant quarter, and before the altars of a thousand gods, brave and desperate adventurers meet and make plans. They leave every day and seek their fortunes in the Sunken Lands.

Travel with us through sunken lands...

Lots of times, we want to play a roleplaying game but just don’t have the time for all the prep work involved. No more. Through Sunken Lands is a kit to make a motley crew of ruthless sellswords, gifted sorceresses, and cunning thieves, and send them off in search of gold and glory. Now we have this simple swords and sorcery roleplaying game that gives a group all the tools they need to play an exciting adventure in a single evening, no homework, no fuss.

Anyone with a background in OSR games will already be comfortable with the core rules of Through Sunken Lands.

• Inspired by the works of Michael Moorcock, Fritz Leiber, and Robert E. Howard.
• Character Playbooks and Scenario Packs for play in a single evening with no prep.
• Player driven setting design for fleshing out the great city and the world beyond.
• A sample sword and sorcery setting: the impossible city of Jundarr and the Hundred Seas.
• Nine Character Playbooks, including the Spell Thief and the Eldritch Sorcerer King.
• Three Scenario Packs: the Mysterious Island, the Treasure Hunt, and the Wizard’s Tower.

Any plans for print-on-demand? Would love to have this as hard-copy.

There seems to be a lot of bad copy pasta going on in the three scenario packs (multiple duplication of table results from one into another scenario, for instance).

Any timeframe for a print version? I'm a huge fan of Beyond the Wall and would like to add a nice hardback version of this game to my display shelf.

Thanks for letting us know. We will take another look at the trade-offs of including print resolution art in the downloadable version.

The bookmarks being displayed in Adobe need fixing. Many of the entries are just random alpha-numerics (example: h.8czujz9qwcva) so you don't know what page they refer to until you click on it. The first one jumps you to page 5.

Hopefully they fix it, but until then, note that if you scroll down past the nonsense bookmarks, there are legible ones below them.

This is epic! Just when you thought BtW couldn't get any better. One of my favorite purchases so far.

Still reading it but found an error on page 96... lists the critter entry as pg 70 but it pg 99. Will add anything else I find here. Really liking what I'm reading so far.

I think I found a mistake: In the scenario packs, the "Treasure Hunt" pack duplicates the "Why have the characters come here?" table from "The Island". The table makes sense for The Island, less so for Treasure Hunt.

I suspect this is compatible with BtW.
And any hint on when we can expect a POD would be welcome.

Per the Flatland Games website:

"Play with 'Beyond the Wall and Other Adventures'. 'Beyond the Wall and Other Adventures' is a fully compatible sister game to 'Through Sunken Lands.'"

"Print on demand physical copies will be available in 2021."

Having bought the PDF, this is exactly the Sword & Sorcery version of Beyond the Wall (the same OSR-derived basic rules, character playbooks, scenario packs, etc.)

Swords and Sorcery Dungeon World is what I'm hearing. Is that accurate?
Customer avatar
Paul D December 24, 2020 9:16 am UTC
It says OSR which is old school revival, so no nothing to do with DW. Playbooks drew my attention for a sec but no, it's D&D based I'd say as almost all OSR is.

It's based on Flatland Games' brilliant "Beyond the Wall", which is OSR small fantasy. They do have playbooks, which serve a similar function to the playbooks in Dungeon World, but the rules are OSR - d20 rolls; saving throws; Rogue, Warrior, and Wizard classes; 1-10 levels with differential XP progression based on class; etc.

(NOTE: Review coming once I get a chance to read it all thoroughly)

What you get for your money:

Core Rulebook (217 pages)
Notables from cursory glance:
-Nice Layout (similar to BTW)
-Bookmarked
-Definite Hyperborean vibe and some Lovecraftian 'fishfolk', etc.
-Monster selection decent (some interesting pre-made adversaries)
-Details about the world for developing campaign
-Lots of islands to visit (sailing journey rules)

NOTE: Bookmarks have some curious random gobbledygook bookmarks at the top. Maybe leftover from the bookmark prepping ?

Character Playbooks:
Nine Character Options (4 pages each)

Scenario Packs:
Three Scenario Starts (8 pages each)

Maps:
-Great City
-World Map

Character Sheet:
Two pages (all the essentials)

Note: Maps and Character Sheet are free on the website.

Should keep me busy over Christmas. heh

They mention on the website that POD will be coming in 2021. Probably PDF first to get any errata feedback, etc. Judging by BTW, at least one can be confident that the core book will be supported by expansion material to embellish the game.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
