Using Ironsmith: Assets for Other RPGs

First of all, if you're not playing Shawn Tomkin's Ironsworn game, what are you waiting for?!  It's a great game that has all the drivers you need to make excellen fantasy stories with just the right amount of grit.  Plus, Shawn graciously gives it away for free right here on DriveThru!  I also highly recommend Shawn's Ironsworn: Delve supplement.

As great as Ironsworn is, you could also use the assets in this supplement to help you build out cool character concepts to explore in almost any other gritty, fantasy system or setting.  There are definitely no conversion to other system rules contained here, but maybe the ideas sparked here can point you in a direction in whatever system you are using.  So have at it!

Not an Official Ironsworn Product

This is NOT an official Ironsworn product.  This is a fan-made supplement that is only possible through the generous licensing granted by Ironsworn author, Shawn Tomkin.  Thank you, Shawn!

Nice work. I find Ancestral Knowledge pretty weak. Not only it activates only when you Fulfill a Vow (pretty uncommon move, I'd say you can use it just every 3 or more "sessions", not mentioning really hard vows very long to complete), but it grants a single Asset AND just for a very limited time (until the next dawn, when PROBABLY you'll have no more adventures, 'cause you just finished the vow, you are probably ready to rest for a while...)
It could be better if you could "name" the Acestror and its Asset every time you roll the move (so you have a sort of variable asset). Also, probably it should be better served if it deactivates on narrative specific moments (for example, on a Pay the Price: you are not worth enough!), or when you roll a "1" using the Asset.
Finally, it should be related to a more common move (Reach a Milestone, Make Camp or Sojourn, maybe?). Also, it's sad that with a Weak Hit you don't get it. You could add that the process is stressing, so you...See more

Yeah, you're right. In fact, as written, why wouldn't you just take the actual Asset your ancestor is giving access to? I'll workshop that one again. However, the Asset doesn't activate when you do the move Fulfill a Move. It activates when you're working towards it. So you can theoretically get up every morning and try to call forth your ancestor as long as they continue to support whatever quest you're on. But again, you'd be better off just taking the actual asset except that this gives you three separate assets, like a build your own asset. I like all your thoughts, so I'll mark this one down for an update when I consolidate all the Ironsmith stuff into the printed book version. Thanks for your help and suggestions!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
