No preview? Not even a page count? For a "deal-priced" $18 PDF? They must have an incredibly loyal customer base, because I can't imagine too many people are looking to overspend on a "hard" sci-fi game published by people who appear to have just discovered the internet.

It seems that Columbia Games simply doesn't care; have you read the comments below and on their other products? I wonder what their problem is...

Their problem seems to be that they think they're doing something super special allowing people to buy their stuff. I spent decades using Harn and Harnmaster, and it's good-to-great stuff if you're alright with a really dry take on fantasy. The HM system is pretty genius for knights and bandits type stuff. Pilot's Almanac is one of the greatest RPG publications I've ever seen. Their pricing, though, is beyond ridiculous, and their DGAF way of marketing is dumb as hell.

I will say that, while I've never read High Colonies, HarnMaster In Space is a hard no. I've done my time munching saltines and washing them down with flat Pepsi. I want fun, and HM In Space sounds about as much fun as shaving your butt and sitting in a pool of gin.

@Andrew M What you say makes a lot of sense. I also own some Harnmaster products, but with medieval "simulators" out there like Chivalry & Sorcery, Hackmaster, Darkwood, Pendragon, Paladin, etc., people are going to choose those products that offer more bang for their buck, said IPs are just as fun as Harn, and are more affordable; if only Columbia had some common sense, and got off their high horse, no pun intended.

Even worse this thing got crowd sourced for five times what Columbia was asking for.

If you really like the Harn system, this is just Harn ported to a near future spacefaring setting. I was briefly part of the Kickstarter for this, provided feedback, and was turned off by the reactionary comments from Columbia Games. If you like that sort of thing then this game is for you. If not, there are far more inclusive and better near-future sci-fi systems available.

Columbia Games seems rather "unfriendly" towards their clients, based on my interactions with them in the past; you said it's not as inclusive, what sci-fi elements did they exclude from the game?

For example? Hostile? Or...? (I'd like to get a hard scifi rpg, but I don't which is really good :/ )

Columbia's Game page is here and it feels like this is a Harnmaster powered version of the old Waterford Press background or at least very similar. Proper Preview please Columbia

Is it just a re-release of the original system, an update or a solid revision?

I can't find an answer to this anywhere. Hs anyone compared the two? Other than name, is there any similarity or are they completely different games?

It looks like an update - it's using the HarnMaster rules, with some changes to the setting.

So Harnmaster and the old Waterford Publishing House Ltd High Colonies were similar? Interesting. I never knew that.

I'm interested, but need a preview to understand more what I'd be buying.

Why no preview?

Exactly. No idea what the rules mechanics are like, no preview = no sale.

Forget about the preview, I'm worried about the page count. This is Columbia Games we are talking about, it wouldn't surprise me if they are charging $29.99 for a 60 or even 30 page document.

Hi Abraham! I just bought it and it is 132 pages. Mechanically speaking seems similar to HeroMaster. But I am just starting to read it.

It's similar to Harnmaster. I think you're getting two game systems confused.

You are right, HarnMaster. It seems I can't write even one line without making a mistake, stupid me.
Customer avatar
Abraham Z November 09, 2020 3:12 pm UTC
Hi Fabio! Thanks for the information, that sounds slightly more reasonable... within Columbia Games' usual pricing.

I would suggest that nobody should spend $30 on a PDF where the publishers can't be bothered to post a page count or a preview.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
