Hippogryph Codex

Publisher's Note: A revised edition of this title is in the works for Summer 2021. If you purchase this version, you will automatically have access to the updated edition when it is released. You will not need to purchase the new edition separately.

A complete core book inspired by D20 and Fate, a melding of story gaming and traditional tabletop roleplaying.

Hippogryph is a d20-based, story-driven tabletop fantasy roleplaying system. It is the collision of the D20 System and Fate RPG, but like the legendary creature it is more than the sum of its parts. This isn’t off-brand D&D with Fate aspects stapled on, nor is it a collection of feats, spells, and class abilities translated into Fate terms. Hippogryph is a unique system that blends established legacy fundamentals with flexible, DIY story game ideals. Hippogryph System: Story Meets Tradition.

The approach is creativity-forward. While there are lists of abilities for you to choose from, it's quick and easy to make up your own elements. You can adapt the system to suit your own idea of what fantasy characters, worlds, and adventures should be like. The presentation is minimalist, so every page is filled with useful information.

Check out the Full-Size Preview for more on how the system works.

Looking forward to the revised version of this title. When might we expect its release? Will that version of the book get the POD treatment? Thanks in advance!

This looks like a fun idea. However I am confused with features. I am not sure if they need to be invoked or not.

Page 12: Background Features
Most non-human fantasy beings have some exceptional, magical, or supernatural abilities. That’s part of what makes them fantasy characters. The existence of such abilities is a fact, but characters still need to invoke them to use them. These are different from open features, which are not attached to elements and do not need to be invoked.

But according the page 42, this seems to contradict that:

As with element-based features, you need to invoke these abilities for a hero point in order to use them. This is a fiction-forward approach. Most characters in movies, television shows, and novels don’t make their best move all the time. Too much repetition becomes boring. These are meant to be pulled out and used when you really need them. Hence, limiting their use by requiring the expenditure of a hero point...See more

Yes, you get all of the features listed for concept and culture elements. They need to be invoked, to prevent people from creating their own elements and throwing in all the features plus the kitchen sink as freebies.

Stand-alone features need to be invoked, for the reasons stated in the text.

There was originally a category of features (in addition to bonus-granting and establishing) called open features, that were simple statements of fact. Sort of like plot hooks that anyone could latch onto for free. They weren't attached to any element, and didn't do much of anything. They were confusing and redundant and were cut for space. The line on page 12 is an artifact of that cut. All remaining features need to be invoked.

Yes, there will be both hardcover and softcover print-on-demand options available. Between the pandemic and the mail situation everything is delayed and we cannot estimate when those options will go live.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
