Prison of the Hated Pretender

Suggested Price $5.00

A sculpted tower's blank eyes stare down from the lonely in dry hills beyond the last withered turnip fields, the doorway in its eternally screaming mouth beckoning daredevils and foolish fortune hunters.  Haunted, shunned and anathema -- spending a night in The Prison of the Hated Pretender will certainly give you bragging rights in the coast's dusty hamlets, and if the rumors of ancient gold within are true enough to buy passage to a less wretched land.

Prison of the Hated Pretender is an introductory adventure for 4-6 characters levels 0-1. This new 2020 edition updates and streamlines the 2012 adventure (originally published on the Dungeon of Signs blog) and adds suggested guidance and playstyle notes to assist new Game Masters unfamiliar with the principles of classic play. It also includes conversion notes and statlines necessary for playing the adventure in both the classic (Basic) and most recent (Fifth) editions of the game.

A review of the original Prison of the Hated Pretender:

"As an introductory adventure this is great. The setting is a classic one. The monsters are wonderfully different. And there are hooks and mysteries. WONDERFUL hooks and mysteries. [...]  The mind races to find excuses to use this adventure. That’s a good supplement." -- Bryce Lynch, Ten Foot Pole"

This awesome module has a minor blemish that hit me straight away. It looks like the title for the PDF (that appears in the 'title bar' on a PDF reader) is off. Rather than "Prison of the Hated Pretender", I see "C:UsersTrogdorAppDataLocalTempmso7474.tmp".

Thanks for letting me know, that's an odd one. If I get to an updated version I will see what I can do about the file names.

Very cool! There's a 'C' in area 5 and an 'F' in area 9. A couple of questions:

1. Do those just mean 'Ceiling' and 'Floor', respectively, to mark the trap door location?
2. The Gnarled Tree description says it can be used to gain access to areas 5 and 9. Should that be areas 5 and 7 (or 8)?

Again, great work, thanks!

1. Yes "C"eiling and "F"loor are the notation for trapdoors found on page b58 of the Moldvay Basic Book, also potentially the notation for "chest", but hopefully the text make it clear.

2. Thanks, that's a typo, I will update to fix it in the next version. The tree can be used to climb to both the second level and the roof.

Very cool indeed. I was waiting for this!
But is it possible to have a low res and/or web-optimized version? 105mb for a 20 pages module is a little too much! :)

There's now a 4MB version available as well, which should be more manageable.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
