100 Conspiracy Theories to Encounter

The Truth is Out There. Or is it? This is a collection of 100 different conspiracy theories suitable for appropriately-themed modern campaigns. Whether or not any particular theory is true, or simply the ramblings of deranged minds, is up to the GameMaster. They can be used to add conspiracies to a campaign, perhaps even series of interlocking conspiracies, or to confuse the issue. Some of the presented conspiracies are quite minor whilst others would require significant organisations to carry them out.

Here are some sample results:

  • Quantum computers will be able to go through existing encryptions like a knife through butter. Supposedly, they haven't been invented yet, but that isn't true. Several organisations have secretly managed to develop quantum computers and have used the technology to gain access to every other networked system in the world. Next time there's a supposed computer "malfunction" responsible for something, realise that it wasn't a malfunction but a deliberate result of being controlled by a quantum computer.
  • Ransomware attacks, where the attacker encrypts a computer and demands money in order to unencrypt it, is on the rise. The easiest way of stopping ransomware attacks is by not connecting to the internet. However, many computer programs need an internet connection in order to work, especially those that work on a subscription. This makes it impossible to remain unconnected to the internet for many users, and this is not a coincidence. Companies are working with those who distribute ransomware, so that it is nearly impossible for the average user to be immune.
  • Recycling things is deliberately done in a very inefficient way, which adds to the expense. Goods and packaging could easily be designed to be more easily, and more cheaply, recycled, but that would lower profits. By making the process more inefficient than needed, people can end up paying more both to recycle and for the goods that contain recycled material.
  • RFID chips are being put in everything. Sometimes, they are just slipped into an item; others, they are an integral part of it. These chips can be read with the correct readers, and may shop security systems have been designed to be able to do this. This allows those controlling such to get large amounts of data sent to them on what people are doing, where they are going and what they are buying or borrowing.
  • Roads often seem to follow rather illogical paths, that cost more to make and make very little sense if examined. The usual claim is that the road has been built to avoid something, whether this was a natural feature originally, or more recently some apparently endangered flora or fauna that can only be found in the original path. The truth is, the roads were always intended to follow the path they took. They are huge sigils that generate power; the more traffic uses the road, the more power they generate.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
