It is the dawn of the American Revolutionary War of 1776. A tangled web of conspiracy spans North America. In the war for survival, it does not matter what your creed, color, culture or gender is – all stand together. Thomas Paine’s Common Sense is held aloft in every Rebel patriot’s hand, as they take up arms against the British Empire. But as the Revolution has begun, something far more mysterious stirs...

Flames of Freedom: Grim & Perilous RPG is an American gothic horror game set in 1776 North America, powered by the Zweihänder RPG engine. Experience Flames of Freedom before its formal release in July 2021 by downloading the free Quickstart. It comes equipped with 32 pages of game rules, an 11 page adventure, 7 pre-generated characters, cut-out paper miniatures and a print-out map. It can be played one-on-one, but also supports up to 7 players and one gamemaster. The rules and adventure are designed for new gamers, providing a 2-3 hour play experience.

This Quickstart is an all-in-one game, and does not require any previous play experience with Zweihänder RPG.

We have instituted a new taxonomy for digital title names. For purposes of determining what the correct PDFs to use are, reference the following:

  • v1.3 (Oct 8) - Table of contents updated; errata fixed from playtesting updated throughout, trappings updated, content warning placed into the adventure.
  • v1.2 (Oct 7) - Pre-generated characters are now placed before the adventure, so players avoid spoilers. Characters have been given a handful of new trappings 'Peppers' is an Irish Wolfhound that the Animal Whisperer starts the game with. Magistrate's Trait and Quirk have been updated.
  • v1.1 (Oct 6) - minor errata update for 'Suffering Peril' on page 31
  • v1.0 (Oct 5) - release

I have been a big supporter of Zweihander, both when I could Ref it in person, and online using Roll20. I'm often on the discord, and patreon. I am playing games either in the medieval campaigns I or my friends have created and use many of the fantasy supplements that have been developed by the community content creators. I was skeptical that a Flames of Freedom supplement to Zweihander with a historical librarian referee would catch my players or my own attention for long.
I had played and GMed the original version of CoC and many of the WFRP and Warhammer warfare games. I love the Cthulhu mythos and the dark artwork found in the original WFRP supplements by WD. The Realm of Chaos books influenced many of the campaigns I've ran since 1988. That said I didn't expect to see Zweihander fit Colonial Gothic into a Flames of Freedom chapbook so well.
To me keeping the core Zweihander ruleset was important. In reading though the Quickstart and seeing the updates to some rules, while others are rewrites of...See more

Well, how to put this so that drivethrurpg doesn't start to delete comments again ... Colonial Gothic is pretty good actually.
Easy and working rules, nice appropriate artwork, no political agenda, well researched.
This, this is ... something else.

Thanks for the feedback. Because this is a Quickstart, it does not contain the deeper details and history of North America during this period. The Quickstart is purposefully brief to make the game playable right now.

You will find in the full release for Flames of Freedom that the history and background is even deeper, as Richard is including never-before-seen material in Flames of Freedom. It will be enhanced by Indigenous researchers with lived experiences in the nations presented within. You’ll also find new research around womens’ roles, religion as it relates to the period, deeper insights into the Black experience during the war and new mysteries about the Freemasons, Inquisition and more.

As with Colonial Gothic, you’ll find a 26-page bibliography in the back, containing resources and oral histories which informed the game.

What the heck is going on with this product?
Ever since the initial release there have been 2 or 3 updates, ostensibly to fix issues, and each time the PDF gets more mangled.

This most recent fix, 1.2, has 3 files:
Pre-Gens only, which contains the rules and pre-gens, and has no ToC any longer,
a file called Quickstart which has missing pieces of the ToC, and the link to the pre-gens is broken,
and finally a file called adventure only which also no longer has a ToC.

I don't know what's going on over there with all of these half baked and broken updates. It makes the product and the company look very unprofessional.

Thanks for the feedback. We have a file coming through later today (v1.3) that will remediate the bookmark and ToC issue.

A great start to a great game from great people.
I wont spend the whole review inflating egos but Ive been hyped for this game since Daniel announced it on twitter so long ago.
I recognize the names of folks who worked on this and happy to see the love and care that went into it.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
