Cantrip Fantasy Roleplaying System

Cantrip Fantasy is a simple, easy-to-learn tabletop roleplaying system. It was designed for people who’d like to play something like that big, brand-name fantasy game but feel overwhelmed by big, fat books full of rules. This system was also created for people who don’t like being limited to the character options in those books, and would like to create their own.

There are only three basic steps that you need to follow in order to play:

  • Step 1: Make a Character.
  • Step 2: Have Adventures.
  • Step 3: Repeat as Desired.

Cantrip Fantasy uses six-sided dice. You will need a lot of them. Pencils and paper are helpful, too. Anything else, like miniature figures, funny hats, and snacks are completely optional. The assumption is that at least one person playing is familiar with the basics of tabletop roleplaying, and can act as the guide for the other players.

Check out the first 25 pages, over half the book, in the previews!

I like this system quite a bit, however I'm not quite sure what to make of the monster descriptions in terms of combat.

For example, a Large Earth Elemental, Type: 3 (Large Elemental, 12 dice total); Subtype: 2 (Earth); Fighting: 2 (Push); Spellcasting: 3 (Earth Control, Summon Earth Elementals); Skills: 2 (Notice). Are the Type and Subtype dice added to Fighting in Combat? That would seem to make sense, as this would be a Large creature made of earth and stone which one would think would be pretty tough.

When it takes damage, which is typically resolved by removing dice from the Fighting dice pool, do you also factor the Type and Subtype dice into the damage it can take? If not, this hulking stone behemoth can only take 2 hits before it goes down, whcich definitely doesn't seem right.

You need to take out all of its dice before a monster goes down. If you take out it's fighting dice, then for some reason it can't add it's fighting dice when smacking you around.

Ok, I think I'm getting it. So if Fighting is reduced to 0, it could still use its Spellcasting abilities (which I'm guessing would also be augmented by its Type/subtype dice). In the case of physical combat, would it still be able to use Type/subtype dice to brawl once the fighting dice are gone?

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
