SM14 Of the Rakuli

In ancient times the bizarre world of Barnaynia was ruled by the Rakuli, the Great Old Ones, a strange species of incredible physical and magical power!

For tens of thousands, perhaps millions of years they ruled the world and every race was a slave to their whims.  Using strange magic and odd personal ambitions they created many of the strange species that inhabit the dark places of the world.  They were almost godlike in their powers and appearance - NOTHING could stand against them.

And then, 90,000 years ago, they just disappeared...

Their great constructions became silent and fell into disuse.  Creatures that once ran from them came to occupy their empty cities above and below ground.  The fantastic structures of this greatest of all civilisation fell into ruins and dust.  The creatures themselves passed from living knowledge.  The Rakuli became a memory, then a legend, then a myth and then nothing...

These days there are few that have ever heard of the Great Old Ones, fewer still that have heard the name "Rakuli".  Learned scribes argue over the legitimacy of any trace of their ancient culture.  Their artistic relics and magical items are often misappropriated by lesser species.  They have passed into the mists of irrelevance.

So what were they?  What happened to them?

And why are adventurers now returning from the deep Darkworld telling tales of powerful entities and carrying strange and powerful items they have stolen from these new foes?

This bestiary includes everything you could want to know about the mysterious Rakuli, including their statistics, history, society, artefacts and powers.  There are adventure ideas and explanations of tactics, attitudes and strategies.

Intended for the Barnaynia Gameworld and City of Dunromin FRPG setting, this OSRIC (OSR) based monster can really be used anywhere you like.  They are no simple monster but offer the Games Master a new a mysterious foe around which they can build a whole campaign if they wish.

All of the Dunromin University Press products are designed to be low cost, high quality publications that can be used in almost any Fantasy Role Playing Game. Check out our website for all the latest news and information - just search for Dunromin University Press or click on the link.

Which is the update? It's helpful to date or number files so it's easier to tell.
Edit: It's the one with "for_download".

Sorry for the slow response - It's the "for download" version. Yes, we will add version numbers; good idea.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
