The After is a setting of savage frontier action (think The Revenant or Jeremiah Johnson) in a sci-fi post-apocalyptic world (think Annihilation or The Quiet Place). It uses the newly retooled Savage Worlds Adventure Edition.

The After is set in the northwestern reaches of the broken North American continent. You play survivors of the shattered human race trying to rebuild their world after nearly a century of alien predation and war.

The destructive invasion of Earth, followed by a terrifying war between rival Alien species far more advanced than mankind, has left the Earth a broken version of its former self. Major cities and areas of industrial and military strength have been completely obliterated. Only in the worlds most sparsely populated areas have people survived: areas that were ignored by the rampaging alien forces.

It is now a world of great change but also great opportunity; a strange world to explore and to forge a new home in. With the collapse of modern civilization, survivors must return to the old ways, find inspiration and knowledge utilized by frontiersman and native people who lived and prospered in North America centuries before.

New bonds must be formed, new settlements require aid and protection and the war ravaged ruins of Pre-Harvest Earth need to be explored for their knowledge and resources.

The war is over.  The Enemy has gone.  Reclaim the Earth.

I bought the book less than a month ago as print-on-demand, but skipped the PDF due to the extra seven or so bucks of cost (which was not there earlier, coz I thought you decided to charge extra for it). Now you can get the PDF along with the price of the POD book, again. My luck. Was this intentional?

sounds like you picked up a hardcover during the recent sale on hardcover POD books.
We've got the POD+PDF bundle set so the pdf is free with hardcover or just a bunch more on softcover.
Unfortunately, the site-wide sales don't parse that logic.
If you send me your email address at mikelaff at gmail dot com, I'll send you a complimentary copy of the pdf.

Hi Adam,

Many of the "quest givers" in the world are more interested in providing physical things than Salvage. They might offer weapons, armor, survival gear, horses, livestock, or other benefits that are super useful in a post-apocalyptic world. Salvage is meant to genericize the bags-full of miscellaneous "stuff" that might be useful on the bartering table. If they did sweeten the deal with Salvage, remember that every $100 of Salvage fills up a backpack - it takes up a lot of space!

That said, the amount of 'reward' a GM gives will really depend on the tone they want to deliver for 'their' version of The After. Do you believe that firearms are rare, bullets are hard to find, and it should be a difficult grind for the party to stock up on food, shelter, and survival gear? Then maybe $50 per character per mission is sufficient (with occasional greater rewards). If you want to run a more over-the-top version of The After where players can replace broken weapons...See more

I've recently learned that another publisher (of "Dead End") is able to offer their work in graphic novel format through drive thru rpg. You responded to my recent comment about this ("Thank you"). I was wondering if you had looked into it and found an answer. Second, I was wondering if there was any progress with moving the content to fantasy grounds? I would love to support both of these mediums!

I'm now starting to understand the negative feedback in the kickstarter. I've actually read all of the comments. Though I'm not usually blunt in this regard and try to be supportive, the business and marketing decisions for this project were and continue to be terrible. Thinking this project needs a reset because it does have potential. So much about it that I love. As a customer, I would simply want three things. One, a book in graphic novel size. Two, a vtt option that isn't outrageously overpriced. Three, a person that would actually look at the Pinnacle Kickstarters and understands why they are successful.

With all due respect thats a rather minor issue in the host of issues. I'm sure you guys are tired of getting beat up over this but look at it from our side. We are understandably disappointed and irritated. The added insult to injury of some of the developers responses doesn't help your case even if I can sympathize with why they may feel the need to respond with some of the comments that they do.

I would also add that you do have control over the price points in FG because the price point was changed after you reached out to them. There have been comments from Doug (Smiteworks) and comments from your team on the FG forum. It is a bit dishonest to say that you have zero control over the price points. That being said, I will continue to support your projects because they are good. Increased transparency and open discussion are always welcome. Flat out dishonesty is not.

Well, I certainly don't know what you've heard from anyone else.

But here's exactly what happened:

We had no control on the initial price point. I honestly don't recall if we were asked for input on that. If I had been asked, I certainly wouldn't have said: "Price it higher than the pdf."

When we saw that it was not a good price point, we emailed and requested that it be lowered.

It took 3 weeks and multiple emails to get any reply.

It took 3.5 weeks for the price to be lowered.

Seems like you really do want to argue the point though, Kyler.
Hey - let me go through the email chain.

But - you are right. It was released on 2/17. I emailed on 2/18 asking for a price change for KS backers.
I sent several emails and didn't receive a response until 3/1.
So - it was 2 to 2.5 weeks and not 3 to 3.5. You are correct. Forgive me for a lapse in memory.

Finally they responded and after a few emails back in forth - we got the price reduced to the same as the pdf on DTRPG on 3/4 or 3/5

Oh hey - I found an email from 1/10/2021 where I asked them to go with the pdf price.
I don't know why they chose to go higher. It has been pointed out that we used to have an "original price" in a red font that was in the 50s. That's just a marketing thing and it has never been for sale at that price on this website or during the KS.

Maybe the guys from FG were confused. Maybe they misread the pdf price. I don't know.

I...See more

Honestly, this is the wrong forum this in-depth, contentious and exhaustive discussion of a Fantasy Ground product which isn't even available for sale on DriveThruRPG.

Please use the appropriate thread on the Fantasy Grounds forum for any further discussion of the Fantasy Grounds product. Alternately, you can reach us at the Facebook page for The After.

Just as an FYI for everyone, SmiteWorks generally lists products for Fantasy Grounds at the book price as opposed to the PDF price unless they have some other arrangement in the license agreement. So the starter price had little to do with the publisher and everything to do with SmiteWorks.

Any news on when it may be on Foundry?
Customer avatar
Kyler S March 06, 2021 6:39 pm UTC
This would have to be a discussion between Foundry, Pinnacle, and Fainting Goat Games. Foundry would have to get a license to sell the product. I do know that Pinnacle now has a relationship with Pinnacle and Pinnacle actively sells the SWADE product which would support "The After". The release to FG was a mess initially. It did however get worked out. I give koodos to everyone involved in working that
out.
Customer avatar

I meant Foundry has a relationship with Pinnacle. This was established recently. However, the relationship for and foundry release that can actually be purchased would have to occur with Fainting Goat Games.

What's the difference between the standard color book and the premium color?

here's a link that explains it pretty well: https://onebookshelfpublisherservice.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360020415653-The-Basics-of-Book-Printing

Here's a cut-n-paste of the basic difference:

The primary difference between Standard 70 Color and Premium Color books is the ink (and the process with which the ink is printed).

Standard 70 Color uses inkjet technology. This option offers lower cost, but the colors won’t be quite as sharp or as bright as in a Premium Color book.

Premium Color uses a digital offset press. This option offers superior color quality, but is more expensive to produce.

Mentioned this over on the KS - putting it here too for consistency. The print vouchers from the KS entitle you to a book "at cost" - ie all you're paying is the print and ship costs. No profit goes to us for that. Unfortunately, both print and shipping costs have climbed up a bit in the last few months. I'm currently talking to the team about doing a Standard version of the book which would be 7-10$ cheaper on the print costs. If we decide to do that - we'll announce it here and on the KS.

A shocking and absolute trash deal on this project. I pledged 150 pounds at the Breach Runner level. While I will openly admit that I was slow to respond and own that side of it the authors did the about the least due diligence imaginable to ensure or remind me that my inputs were still pending for inclusion into the book. I have the emails and Jon Gibbons sent me a single email asking me for details. While this is still technically my fault for getting caught up in real life and not responding; for the amount of money I pledged I would have expected at least a reminder or some respect for the my cash that they are now carrying around in their pockets.

To add insult to injury I received my reward in my inbox today and what do I find when I submit the voucher? It's going to cost me nearly $30 to get the book printed and a total of $36 when taxes and the cheapest possible shipping is added. So in the end I have paid a total of $229 and all I will received is a single supplement for Savage Worlds. Sound...See more

Hopefully, there were a lot of lessons learned. The product itself is great and I would love to see it expand. However, based on comments I have read on the kickstarter, the implementation and value was terrible. When I first saw the product, I was skeptical and as a result, mainly because of no offer of a graphic sized novel hardcover, I chose not to support it. It's my hope that the implementation doesn't turn to many people off because the ideas and art behind the project are really good.

Literally, no one before your comment had asked for a graphic novel sized book. No one that I saw anyway. We had no idea that anyone was interested in this - because it never came up.

I suspect in the future we'll just downplay print altogether since it's been such a sore spot. Maybe just offer POD on the storefront afterwards and leave it at that.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
