Gallant & Bold

Watermarked PDF

Old school roleplaying game, based on the OD&D family.

Light and easy rules, yet tactical and deep.

No grim and dark horrific doomed expeditions.

Only helpful wanderlust and daring adventures!

Welcome to the classical fantasy-vanilla world of Argosia, its wraiths and dragons, its goblins and hags !

It's now your turn to become one of those incredible adventurers, gallant and bold, destined to perform glorious feats – if you do not die first in the clutches of a monster. Neither glory nor death really matters to you, nor wealth or honors. You are a wanderer and a gallivant. You are a hero. You’re a legend!

A lot of things to like about this game. Is there plans to do any expansions, in English?

Hi Chibi Publishing - could you share a bit more about Gallant & Bold rpg? I am intrigued, but the preview does not give a lot of detail on what might set the game apart from other OSR stalwarts such as Basic Fantasy RPG, Labyrinth Lord, Swords & Wizardry, Knave, and so on. Could you perhaps share what Gallant & Bold 'does differently' or 'adds to the flavor' while sticking with the classic OSR framework of so many games? I'm a big fan of OSR games myself, and really like the artwork of Gallant & Bold...but I'm also keen on learning about systems and what makes them special, sets them apart, and so on. I want to be 'sold' on this game...convince me to part with some coin of the realm to check this game out...please 'sell me' with some detail...thanks!

I've been musing with the S&W OSR-tree for many years, using its simplicity to developp many games (some I published by the past in french, some I hide in my Drive Disk). I'm also a big user of Searchers of the Unknown (by Nicolas Dessaux, one of my compatriots) and I've developped a hack of my own based on this game.
G&B use the basic architecture of S&W Continual Light (four races, four classes, E7 - perfect for my tastes), with many many twists - I didn't simply copy the texts but use them as a base and then remodel almost everything. For the novelty, you will find : 1/ a unified roll-over mechanics, with advantages and disadvantages. The abilities are 3d6-rolled, but the lower the better. No modifiers, just a roll-over the ability score. So, same mechanics than Saving throws (over save) or Attack Rolls (over AC). And there is the maneuver check (over your own AC) for all the moves and stealth rolls... So only four types of rolls, all the same.
2/ I use damage mechanic that...See more

Nicolas, thank you for getting back to me so promptly and sharing what sets Gallant & Bold apart from other OSR fantasy offerings. I've just purchased and downloaded a copy. I look forward to exploring its contents, and from there, getting it to my tabletop. Cheers and best, - Brian C.

Hi, I absolutely LOVE John’s art (I have since BoL), and if this was a print book I might buy it on that alone...but as a pdf, I’m forced to ask about the game. Other than the Spectacular art, what sets this apart from yet another (of dozens upon dozens) S&W Whitebox clones with a few house tweaks? Thank you.

Hello and thanks!
G&B is my take on the S&W family-tree (in the Continual Light branch). It derives also from my work on Hunters of the Unknown and Princes&Vagabonds. It propose a unified roll over mechanic - ability checks, save, maneuver checks and attack rolls, all against fixed target numbers. For example, to climb a cliff, you roll against your own (ascendant) AC. Also, all characters are full adventurers (the magic user wears armor and yields swords). There are also may useful tools I never found elsewhere that I use in my campaigns.
I hope that G&B is not just another clone, but brings some new things to game. Else, I wouldn't have publish it (or for free).

I'm with you on the art. A really lovely style. I don't know if I need yet another heartbreaker, but I'm sorely tempted by beautiful art and relative brevity.

I like that climbing mechanic. Very cute.

Most of the mechanics are evoked on the first pages.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
