  • This Engine is a system I would describe as a true "Ask the GM" system. --- DTRPG Review
  • [I]f this is what the future of solo looks like, it is very promising indeed. --- /r/Solo_Roleplaying comment
  • Motif Story Engine is a solo play oracle.
    • It provides a dice system and guidance for playing most existing RPGs alone and in small groups without a formal game moderator.
  • Enjoy your favorite roleplaying games alone!
    • Play RPGs without the need for game moderator to handle the rules and generate the world. The dice oracle answers questions you would normally ask your GM.
  • Skip the heavy lifting of prep and jump right in!
    • Whether you are playing alone or in a small "GM-lite" group, MSE helps minimize the setup. The world and plotlines organically evolve as the oracle reveals the world.

This is a complete tool beta release.
Patches and play guidance will be expanded over time.
MSE was originally designed to enable quick pickup play games and fast evolving stories.

The Motif Story Engine is a modular GM and narrator emulator:

  • Use a simple backbone of 3d6 rolls.
  • Mix and match options to tailor your experience and add depth to results.
    • Use as many or as few as suits you. All options are optional.
  • Ask questions just as you would ask a game moderator or storyteller.
  • Simple results and lists that drive your story without getting in the way.
  • Extensible, easily hacked and reskinned for a variety of genres and play styles.

Motif Story Engine provides a robust engine that includes:

  • The use of three standard six-sided dice for the main oracle
  • Guidance for adding twists & turns to your games, bringing an element of surprise
  • A patch for introducing escalating tension in your adventure
  • A patch for bringing increasing chaos and weirdness to the tale

Additional features:

  • Options for different third die effects & results ("flavor die")
  • A mission clock system, representing the limited time and high pressure of sensitive quests
  • A momentum system patch, providing a boost or greater obstacles as your momentum waxes and wanes
  • A prompt system for NPCs, using thought and behavior guidelines to make them easier to emulate in solo and quick play games
  • A prompt system for world events, to generate random events and challenges to provide new hooks and story inspiration

Latest Update:

  • Easier to read and more accessible digest size PDFs
  • Several expansions of advice and guidance
  • Options for more structured stories
  • Inverse option for momentum driving drama and preventing streaks
  • Guidance on using the toolkit to make story engine builds

How would one patch the system so that the character can influence a roll, via abilities or actions?

Generally, this would be handled using your RPG system, as it handles actions. However, there is a companion game engine being released soon.

You have one gorgeous thing there, Peter. As you can see from my review. I ask about mechanics because I am currently running a Tunnels and Trolls game online (you are most welcome to join). My adventurers are in this blasted crater that's messing with their minds. So I proposed to your oracle "Are there encounters about?" I get a (meh) 4. So I wanted to nudge the oracle a bit. Would this be solved by twists and turns?

I like the system so far in my reading, but am also confused about which file to use. There are 2 engine files with one being the original and v2 along with one labeled "digest" at the end. I get the two versioned files, but the digest has different wording and more than twice as many pages. It seems to be spread out more with less page formatting. It's labeled .3. Do I just need to follow the newest main version as you update them, or is there more to be found by using the digest?

Thanks!

I have changed around the files and zipped up the old ones to prevent any confusion. Sorry for making it unclear!

Bought this yesterday and thought "Man this sure could use some kind of reference for all of these tables and patches."

Today, you released just that in four short pages I can print out and add to my Solo Play binder. Thank you for anticipating what I wanted before I could even ask for it.

For those wondering about how this holds up, I'd say this system is wonderful even at a glance. I've found Mythic too wordy and requires far too much setup. Gamemasters Apprentice is wonderful for prompts and cards, but the actual questions can be very broad and unhelpful at times. As such, I frequently found myself trying to use both in this weird combination that took me out of my game. This combines the best parts of Mythic and GMA, then makes it easily digestible. The main PDF even includes starting guides for players brand new to Solo Roleplaying. I seriously wish I had this a year ago when I first started solo roleplaying.

With this on sale, you'd honestly be remiss to not...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
