Gatehouse on Cormac’s Crag

ADD TO WISHLIST >

A Swords & Wizardry adventure for 1st-3rd level characters....

The dilapidated keep on a windswept cliff has long been shunned by the local...so of course, that's where you are headed!  Uncover secrets and explore the unknown as you attempt to rescue 3 helpless maidens.

A mini-mega 7 level dungeon filled with monsters, traps, tricks, and treasure, Gatehouse on Cormac's Crag is filled with classic old school goodness that will remind you of your earliest days of adventure.  Characters are expected to make several forays from town to dungeon, healing, replacing hirelings, gaining experience, and forging thier tale Of heroism.

This adventure was compiled from a pile of the authors childhood maps and vague notes.  These were from the days when the good stuff was created spontaneously by the DM and players, rather than overly detailed plots and railroad descriptions.  I've attempted to give just enough hooks, information, and inspiration to get you playing, while leaving room for the true magic to happen during actual play.

...now, save vs. poison or die!

Great job Dave, I really like this adventure. Solidly put together, decent artwork, great maps, excellent and school-feeling layout! Can we have more of these, please?

Thank you, glad you are enjoying it. I’m pretty excited to get feedback as DMs run groups through it and I see all the different directions (unpredictable) players take.

I’m a one man show, so it might take a while, but I’d love to do the same thing with some of my other notes from days gone by...I’ll have to see how well this adventure is received. :)

I ran a group through the first level, they decided to assault the ruins from the top by using a grappling hook and climbing to the second level. The top level was a breeze, then they descended the stairs and heard voices in the kitchen. As they readied themselves to attack, one prepared to open the door, as he did so he step backwards into the pit trap. Subsequent attempts to subdue those in the kitchen resulted in arrow volleys from the arrow slots. Needless to say, it did not go well with most of the party being one hit away from dying, and one character meeting their doom. Following the game there were cries of "Tucker's kobolds!"

Good work!

Awesome! I actually covered a grappling hook entrance in the “original” before I decided to cut away all the fat and put my faith in al the DMs out there to handle that stuff on the fly. I’m glad you are having fun so far, and creating an original story. Time to head to town, heal, and hire some retainers. :)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
