Mike's Dungeons: The Deep Levels

Selected Option:

MIKE'S DUNGEONS: THE DEEP LEVELS is a sequel to MIKE'S DUNGEONS, but it can be used all on its own. Check it out:

MIKE'S DUNGEONS includes 78 dungeon levels that take 1st-level characters up to 10th level.

MIKE'S DUNGEONS: THE DEEP LEVELS includes 39 dungeon levels that take 10th-level characters up to 14th level.

DETAILS, PLEASE?

This is a massive dungeon of 39 hand-drawn levels, for character levels 10th through 14th. It was made with Moldvay/Cook's 1981 Dungeons & Dragons rules, but it can be used with other versions of the game.

WHAT IT IS NOT:

These dungeons are not for collecting, not for reading, not for gazing at, and not for displaying on your coffee table. It has no art, no stylish formatting, no production values at all. If you aren't going to use and abuse this in a game, there's no reason to buy it.

WHAT IT IS:

The word for this is FUN. These are the dungeons you could have made when you were 12 years old, but were too lazy. It is a no-nonsense dungeon for playing D&D. You don't even need to study it beforehand. You can run it on-the-fly.

YOU CAN PREVIEW ALL 39 LEVELS.

You read that right. You can freely preview every single page of this book. It's like you're flipping through this in a bookstore before you make your decision to buy.

The price comes to less than 8 pennies per level for the PDF, and a quarter per level for the print+PDF option.

Fight on!

If the original 78 levels were inspired by the Thoth Tarot, what were these new 39 levels inspired by?

The 39 levels do not have an over-arching inspiration. I realized that I needed about 40 more dungeon levels to get characters all the way up to 14th level, and since 39 is half of 78, I thought 78 levels + 39 levels = 117 total levels made for some pleasing numbers.

PURCHASER
For folks who don't have this yet, don't bother with the previews. Just buy the thing. It's only three bucks! Once I got over my initial hurdle (I learned that I needed B/X rules handy for some of the monsters, or I had to wing it) I found that these were great for having handy when I needed a quick dungeon for an improv adventure. I printed off both sets and put them into a 3-ring binder. They are set up so that I can see a dungeon on one face, the details on the other face. Perfect for GM'ing!

Now, this product is pretty much a continuation of the earlier one. More levels added on. I haven't gotten my group through the first set yet, so I have no idea if I will ever make it to these levels, but I like the fact that it's a ready-to-go dungeon for any time I have a sudden need for a dungeon. I used to download a random dungeon level from the internet and then open a monster book at random to stock the thing. This takes care of that problem for me and is already built for action.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
