Motivations Card Set (for the Ironsworn System)

$5.00

Inspired by the Key mechanic in The Shadow of Yesterday and later borrowed by Lady Blackbird, this supplement allows you to define your character's drives and be rewarded when roleplaying them.

The set is composed of 30 motivation cards, each representing the most archetypical abstract goals in any kind of fiction. By using them, you can detail your character and give them depth and instinctive purpose. Playing with motivations will also serve you as a compass and incentive to roleplay as appropriate to the narrative, and being mechanically rewarded by doing so.

Meant to be used in any system

Even though these motivation cards are primarily designed to be used with the Ironsworn System, they can easily be implemented in any other roleplaying game following the guidelines within this material.

The premise

Motivations are composed of 3 layers and a buyoff. You take +momentum (or the mechanical boon of the system) as per the layer (or buyoff) come to fruition. The material has ideas as to what these benefits might be and suggests some.

Further guidelines are given as to how motivations interact with each other and what are the considerations to be taken.

Oddly I can't leave a review after buying it. But anyways for anyone interested, here's an ironsworn players perspective....

A few of the cards just rephrase the motivation and don't get very evocative (example: X motivation. Layer 1 - The act of doing X). Most don't but it does pop up a few times and should be mentioned. Also it does feel like (most of) these cards will be a terrible idea for anyone wanting to make the game more challenging. Many are pretty easy to twist or write a scene around for easy rewards.

But that's the point. You are making your character behave like the card suggests. I think these are great resource for people wanting to roleplay and needing a bit of an extra push on deciding how to handle their character, especially if you can restrain yourself from abusing them.

4/5 with the main demerits being that the pdf is structured so the card backs are at the end and you cannot print it double sided, and if you feel $5 is a hair expensive for 30...See more

Hi, Lancer.

Thank you for pointing out the PDF structure. The double-sided printing is definitely something we missed. We'll update it as soon as possible to support it.

The cards weren't made using any asset making tool, not that such tools exist to make cards like this. We just tried to emulate Shawn Tomkin's style to adhere to the format and aesthetic of Ironsworn.

Thanks for the review!

That wasn't meant as a dig so take it as a complement that they look good enough that I couldn't tell. Nice work all around.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
