Sunfall

A thousand years ago, the Sun perished. To cope with a cooling world, a great empire staged a successful invasion of the spirit world, captured a daemon prince, and imprisoned him in an artificial Second Sun. Soon followed the Blessed Age, a brief era of recovery and even prosperity, but it was never meant to last: in a few short centuries, the Second Sun shattered  and its furious prisoner bore down on the world like a comet, plunging it into a Sunless Age of ice and darkness. Now, the ruins of antiquity dot these frozen, starlit lands as human civilization, resilient as ever, thrives among the desolation. Great city-states shelter and protect their inhabitants through tithes and pacts with the spirit world, or wage an endless war against it; merchants and explorers venture farther and farther in their journeys, and foolhardy daredevils strike out into the Wastes in search of riches and glory -- or seek adventure within the confines of city walls.

Sunfall is a post-apocalyptic Gothic fantasy setting for the Genesys Role Playing System. In this 103 page sourcebook, you will find new rules, mechanics and options for character creation, advice for Game Masters, and a rich, baroque world of war, magic, and intrigue.

  • 8 new Archetypes, including the Visitant, an otherworldly spirit in a stolen body, for use in Sunfall or other settings.

  • 13 new Careers, many of which fit seamlessly into steampunk or fantasy settings.

  • 42 new Talents, 2 new spells, 3 novel weapon properties, 2 new Craftsmanship options and a multitude of new items.

  • Rules for duelling, demonic possession, and exorcism.

  • A map and detailed descriptions of the lands surrounding the Byssarian Seas, including politics, a major religion, 10 city-states, and multiple story hooks for Players and Game Masters alike.

  •  New Adversaries, including (but not limited to) possessed monkeys.

Sunfall is a brilliant setting in that it resists easy categorization. The thaumaturges retain some of the trappings of fantasy wizards, but complicated by a cold religious bent. The demon-calling pyromancers and revenants give allusions to Gothic horror, but with a humanity not afforded in genre convention. The world as it stands draws iconography from clockpunk and fantasy conventions, but amongst the ruins of a civilization whose artifacts tilt more into sci-fi, with immortal bronze soldiers and unseen tombs of impossible wonders.

I think the best part of the setting is how it defamiliarizes aspects of our own world: tea, spices, the sun, grass, and fire itself are reframed from the perspective of people from this world, drawing note to how foreign the people of the Byssarian would find our world.

It’s a post-apocalypse that’s a bustling world in its own right.
It’s a cosmology with space for multiple religious interpretations.
It’s a world where no one is truly...See more

The preview for this reads great - I love the focus on social upheaval, early modernity and what I've read about the mythology of the setting. Even though I don't play Genesys, I very much want this. However, I'm very much a print person - is there a chance that this will come out in PoD? And if it does, will previous purchasers of the pdf get a discount?

Hey there! First, I'm glad that you like the preview and are interested in my setting. At the moment, I am in the process of checking for errata and illustrating the book (it's artless ATM), so PoD is not happening until all the remaining typos / errors are fixed and of the art is done and incorporated into the document. When it does, however, I will gladly give a discount to purchasers who already own the PDF.

The setting is gorgeous. Original, deep, complex, and with a brilliant balance of wonder and horror, grimdark and whimsy. It wears its influences on its slave, but goes beyond them to draw you into something unique.

But a lot of games have brilliant and original settings. What Sunfall does to go above and beyond that is also have a really strong *mood* and tone. It comes through in the writing style throughout the whole book. It comes through in the new mechanics. It's great. It doesn't restrict the kind of stories you can tell with this system or this setting. But it gives you some really brilliant tools, pointers, and opportunities for telling tales of scoundrelage, skulduggery, adventure, and gothic melodrama. And on that count, this game absolutely shines.

Really looking forward to the art coming in with future updates!

Thank you so much; I'm glad you liked it -- please let me know if you do end up running a campaign. And as for art, there will be art in a later update! The only reason there isn't any right now (besides the cover and the map) is that I can only draw so fast ;)

Once able, I'll enter a proper review, but even if not using the setting, there are a lot of good things to mine from it. Just from a quick review of it. Very nice, and a lot of work!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
