Deep Carbon Observatory - REMASTERED

New maps, new A4 formt, interlinked with bookmarks and removable art and maps for easy printing and reading.

NEW ART

Plus new Hooks, a fresh Index a re-write with additional bits and pieces and we ever playtested it!

Other than that, at its core DCO is the same D&D adventure.

The adventure is suitable for a lucky mid-range party, a stupid high-level party or an exceedingly clever low level party. It is difficult, with a meaningful possibility of character death.

Players start in the town of Carrowmove, devistated by an unexpected flood, then travel  through a drowned land where nature is turned upside down and desperate families cling to the roofs of their ruined homes, hiding from the monstrous products of a disordered world, through the strange tomb of an ancient race, to a profundal zone, hidden for millennia and now exposed, and finally to the Observatory itself, an eerie abandoned treasure palace, where they will encounter a pale and unexpected terror which will seek to claim their lives.

Should you find them, and defeat their guardians, the treasures of an ancient culture will be yours.

At the final point of the Observatory is a glimpse of another world.

Deep Carbon Observatory is 104 pages long, 40,000 words with extensive artwork by Scrap Princess.

Stats are minimal and given for LOTFP but should be easily transferable into any simple D&D system.

It was created by Patrick Stuart  and Scrap Princess, the maps are by Dirk Dietwieller Leichy and it was brought into being at the command of Zzarchov Kowalski.

PDF doesn't work in Sumatra, my preferred reader. Some art shows up, most doesn't, and there's no text whatsoever.

So I loved this module, until I tried to run it. It's wonderful conceptually, but has lots of flaws. If you're an inexperienced DM don't even try this module, it requires a lot of work to make it playable. The encounters as written are generally either trivial or insurmountable. They often require a specific, but not discoverable solutions. There are tons of "save or die" moments, many of them without any save. There are many situations where a reasonable decision leads to instant death. ( I removed or replaced all of those random death encounters/objects) The final dungeon is awesome, but the maps are super hard to read. I had to re-draw it myself piece by piece in order to run it. One aspect of this module that is super weird is that almost everything is randomized, like how many monsters are in a room, how much treasure is there, what you see if you do thing X. This makes no sense. Why not just say how many monsters are in the room and how many gems are in a chest? The art is mostly atmospheric...See more

Are there any plans for Print On Demand version of this? I think that would be a good option aside from getting it from the publisher's website.

YES, YES, YES! I bought the original DCO, got the physical copy, and seeing this, I am 100% going to pre-order the physical version from the website http://falsemachine.blogspot.com/2020/05/dco-remastered-pre-orders-are-open.html (thank you Peter B from the comments!)

Is there going to be a discount for people that have purchased the previous edition?

I second this for the pdf versions.

Very much want to support Patrick's work, but it does seem a bit unfair to pay end up paying a total of $25 for what is $15. Maybe drivethru can add something like an "upgrade" option for $5 to the original edition? (maybe with the original set as pay what you want, that complicates this on the technical side, but... shouldn't be too hard to do something that makes sense).

I mean, I might pay the $15 anyway because, hey, this is awesome and, hey... it's only $15 so whatever... but on the other hand, like I said, it is a bit unfair. And for some people nothing is "only" $15.

...aaaaand as I type this I notice the dates and realize this came out a year or more ago. But the point is still valid.

Excellent news indeed. Any chance for a printed version?

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
