2D6 Powers

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Heroes possessing supernatural or superhuman abilities have been a staple of literature and entertainment for millennia. From such ancient figures as Samson, Hercules, Hanuman, and Robin Hood to the modern-day exploits of John Henry, The Shadow, Superman and Wonder Woman, superheroes have been part of a rich mythos that continues to this day. Superheroes and their amazing powers have been featured in oral tradition; religious texts and other written works; television and movies; and most famously, comic books.

Superheroes have also been the protagonists of various games, both online and tabletop. While there are many RPG systems that allow players to take on the guise of those who fight for Truth, Justice, and the Human Way; fans of the splendid 2D6 system which powers Cepheus Engine (CE) and the Original Science Fiction Roleplaying Game (OSFRPG) have had to make do with the (necessarily limited) Psionics rules or not run such games at all.

But look! Up in the sky! It’s 2D6 Powers, a suggested set of rules for emulating the astounding feats of comics’ greatest stars. Designed specifically to take the physics-bending capabilities of metahumans into account, the file offers:

  • A brief discussion of superpowers and their level of realism
  • A method for determining a base power level using a new stat: Power (PWR)
  • Creating powers using descriptive Applications, designed for broad interpretation based on Player imagination
  • Rules for using powers in both combat and non-combat applications
  • A method for balancing non-powered “masked vigilante” heroes against modern-day gods
  • And to top it all off, a system for creating super-weapons and equipment

And the rules are also flexible enough to be useful for emulating the Mysterious Powers of the early “Mystery Men” and pulp heroes, and the transhuman abilities of upgraded science-fiction protagonists.

Spring into super action with 2D6 Powers!

I'd buy in order to make my Gamma World/Cepheus come alive but I need to see an example page of the powers and how they work. Just showing title pages is useless.

Any plans for POD? I hate PDFs.

Okay, idiot question: does the Power score represent the total amount of superpowers a character can have? For example, if my character has a Power score of 8, does that mean I could have a power rated at 5 and another rated at 3?

If you ever update this file, I would suggest an example of character creation and how powers get added to the standard character creation.

That's one method. I deliberately left the system freeform enough that the Referee could tweak it to suit his or her campaign. Thus, depending on the intended flavor, PWR could represent multiple powers adding up to the score, one score to represent the max power a super could use, or simply the number of powers the super possesses. Or anything in between. If you look at the example in the Super Weapons & Equipment section, PWR represents the maximum power the meta could bring to bear *and* the number of powers ("slots") (s)he could wield.

Are there pregenerated powers listed or is it a narrative free for all?

It's similar to the spell-building technique used in 2D6 Magic. This gives the player maximum flexibility to describe the power they way (s)he wants. The only worked examples included are for Super-Weapons and Equipment.

Or some form of Traveller or 2d6 variant. It doesn't cover combat or character creation, just the creation and definition of superpowers for that system.

Correct. It's just an "add-on" for the system.

Odd. I know I set it to show a preview when I uploaded it. Should be working now; sorry for the mishap.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
