Fen Orc presents an unofficial sequel to the classic 1977 Sample Dungeon for the world's first Fantasy Roleplaying Game.

  • The haunted caves where Smugglers hide their contraband and the Undead Corsair whose tomb has been disturbed
  • The Temple of the Rat God and the sinister secret society that has infiltrated the unsuspecting town above
  • The ancient Pre-human City where a foolhardy Wizard unearthed something that destroyed his Tower, fifty years ago, and guarded by its own deadly occupants

The scenario includes a 40-location map, key and illustrations as well as 'Optional' text boxes to advise new Referees and players how to introduce greater complexity to these encounters. The adventure can be played as a direct sequel to the 1977 Sample Dungeon or as a stand-alone scenario for 2nd level characters using any OSR rules set.

What level is this adventure? I assume if it is a direct sequel then it starts at around level 2?

I just got this today. I have a few issues with this. #1 why so much black on the maps? OUCH my poor printing ink. #2 why do you use lettering like this? I mean I know room letters were the thing and that is not what I am referring to. These letters don't have a logical placing at all. There are two room descriptions for "P", "R" and "Y", no use of "O" or "Q", and "Z" is used on the map but not listed anywhere. The locations that use two letters are not setup like rooms, are not in alphabetical order (so I can locate them). This is a work of love but it really needs a proof reader and line editor.

Thank you Rachael for flagging up those errors. That's my overzealous word processor altering my room keys for me. Crazy I missed it myself! I'll correct and update the document and you should get a message saying there's a revised file to download!

I'm sorry about the black ink! I was so keen to get the map to look like the Holmes original I didn't think about printer-friendliness. I'll see what I can do to improve that !

The map MATCHES the original Holmes format. Holmes used lettering, and the map was all black. Its a free product. Its amazing.

perhaps that is because the publisher corrected the error I flagged. Or did you not read Jonathan's comments about me catch? I do agree the adventure work by Jonathan is great. Hence my willingness to assist with my notation.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
