Forty years ago, Champions: the Super Roleplaying Game was inspired by off-the-leash newsstand comics full of weird and headstrong creators. No one knew where a story was going, and what “heroic” meant changed constantly. That’s why it was the first role-playing game to hand you and a few friends a creative studio, rather than a constructed genre package.

This book presents an exploration of those first-generation texts as envisioned and redesigned by Ron Edwards, long-time Champions player, co-founder of the Forge, publisher at Adept Press, and author of diverse role-playing games. It contains all of the rules you need to create and play any hero and villain you can think of, procedures for the Now so your play-experience is a cutting edge rather than a railroad; and a nonstandard, in-depth examination of superhero comics informed by professionals and insiders.

Like the original game, this one isn’t a setting or a quantitative breakdown of a genre. It’s for your own superhero comics experience. However you want it! Silly or not silly, cool or not cool, retro or contemporary, appropriate or inappropriate, safe or edgy, relevant or not relevant. Never mind what some franchise pays for, what a fanbase demands, or what the experts pontificate about.

This is your studio. Let’s see what you make with it!

Zip file includes PDF, MOBI, and ePUB versions of the book, as well as a character sheet.

Ok, so I can't review the book but I do know how it is laid out from other folks telling me about it. This won't be the same as posting a preview but it will do the job I think. The best way to preview this without actually going into the book is to compare it to the 6th edition releases. For 6th their were two 'core' books published that I would give that classification. The first is Champions the Super Roleplaying Game. This is basically a gamemaster/design philosophy tome. It is beautifully done with great art but it has very little in the way of hard and fast rules. Champions Complete has everything you need to play. All of the rules laid out with very little philosophy behind them. Its the rules of the game. This is in black and white but is still very well laid out and done.

Champions Now is a combination of the two. Ron wants the reader to understand why he is doing things the way he is doing them so he delves into his thinking behind each rule as he explains the mechanic. That is the impression...See more

What's the difference between this and earlier editions? I checked out the KS page for details, but I found it a bit vague tbh. Any more info would be great on the mechanics side. Thanks! Rob.

It’s quite different. It’s like a reimagining really. I ought to write a review at some point, but I need to read it first. The core mechanic of rolling 3D6 under a target is the same, and it takes its cues explicitly from the 3rd Edition of Champions. Some of the Characteristics are measured as dicepool rolls, rather than roll under stats. The game is presented in a more conversational, and less mathematical way. It’s all I will say at the moment.

Aside from the systematic differences in what character sheets look like (Strength, for example, is presented as the straight-up number of d6s you roll as opposed to a number), the principal difference is that Edwards takes a FATE-like approach to both character design and campaign design. It is significant that the game is not set in the Champions Universe and we will not be getting direct conversions of favorites like Foxbat, the Harbinger, and Doctor Destroyer. Instead, the PCs in a sense create their own nemeses through what they select. And the complications (Situations) come before everything else in character design, which is completely new for this genre.

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
