Monsters of Murka Campaign Setting (5e)

Watermarked PDF

The Land of the Free, and the Home of the Brave.

Or, maybe just the home of bad puns and silly satire.

The all-too-familiar world of Murka sprawls out before you, calling upon you, adventurer. Will you rise to the occasion to save what's most important in life (and I'm obviously talking about the economy, here)?

The Monsters of Murka Campaign Setting is an immersive playable parody of United States pop culture designed for fifth edition, filled with recognizable references, bad jokes, and meme-worthy monsters.

You can expect to encounter freedom dragons, redcapped trumplins, and oil elementals while wandering the lands of Murka. On the northwestern shores of Murka, you can visit the rainy city of Sea-Addled, home of the Warlocks of the Shore, who hold the secrets of the old gods. They are responsible for bringing to light each iteration of the ancient holy texts, the most recent of which being the fifth (and trust us, you do not want to ask them about the fourth iteration). Alternatively, you may want to visit Holly Woods, and mingle with celebrities galore, or The Diplomizer himself! But keep an eye out for the Church of Mythatology—they're more powerful than meets the eye. Or, if you'd prefer, you can set your sites on the capital city of Murka: Washtown, home of both Killary and The Don: powerful political pundits who will stop at nothing to rule Murka and its people as they see fit. Where will you make your home? Which leader's right to rule will you fight to uphold?

This 214-page campaign setting includes:

15 new playable subclasses, which include the Brobarian, the Lone Ranger, the Affluenza Sorcerer, the Action Hero Fighter, and the Illuminated Artificer.

• New backgrounds, feats, and race options
28 new monsters, including The Don, Killary, freedom dragons, draguns, and more
Over 80 new spells, weapons, and magic items, including new rules for firearms and explosives
Detailed location descriptions for Sea-Addled, Holly Woods, and Washtown
Written history about how Murka came to be
• A pantheon full of 23 familiar deities
Stale memes

This setting book may be a satire of a familiar world, intended to make you laugh, but the opportunities for real adventure you can embark on are limitless. We encourage you to make self-insert OCs like the cringelords you are! Finally get revenge on your school bully by transforming them into a terrible monstrosity, no true polymorph necessary! And when your character finally makes the most of your hometown-turned-playable-scenario, you can take on the impossible challenge of building an imaginary world where your parents are proud of you and it's super easy to drag yourself out of bed in the morning (no? just me? huh. fair enough)!

Monsters of Murka is designed for you to grapple with the challenges of the modern day in a setting that you control, which we feel can be silly just as easily as it can be serious. We believe that satire can be a powerful tool when used appropriately—therapeutic, even. We encourage you to use this book to serve that purpose. Or, use this campaign setting to educate others! Use this campaign setting to try out a new identity in a safe and familiar environment! The things you can do with this book are limited only by your imagination.

Haven't finished reading everything else in the book yet, but the Monk subclass has generated a lot of heat from me. So excuse me for a moment while I shoot on it with a pipe bomb.

Monks are already Dex/Con/Wis MAD as it is, but adding subclass features that focus on Strength and Charisma on top of it now makes it a 5 Stat MAD class. Unless you've rolled 16-18 in practically everything but Int like John Cena, this subclass is a jabroni that won't even make it past the midcard tier of play. You might as well have named it the Way of the Jobber.

This subclass gets minus five stars. ;P

Having given it a little bit of thought, I have a suggestion for how to bring the WWE Monk back up to balance by making a few changes to Promo School.

1. Add Deception (because heels lie) to the list of options for the gained skill proficiency.
2. Allow the PC to use Cha instead of Wis for all monk abilities.
3. Allow the use of Performance, Deception, or Intimidation instead of Athletics for grappling. These three skills would thematically line up with a technical hold, playing possum, or no-selling, respectively.

Also, I would possibly consider an overhaul of Finisher, as it feels far more MMA than WWE. It's just a takedown and ground & pound that comes on way too late in the campaign to be truly worthwhile. If anything, that fits more as the 6th level ability for its usefulness. By 11th level, the party will likely be fighting things that are too big or too strong to be grappled.

Actually, the whole subclass feels like it's trying to make something that...See more

Hey, Cameron! We actually finished our Kickstarter last year. Our Backerkit supports pre-orders, and we are working to get Print-on-Demand set up here on DriveThruRPG.

Will there be any details added about the current plague and the great toilet paper famine?

Hey, Ben! That's something we're exploring with our Patreon expansions (our most recent one will be going live on DTRPG this week, as a parody of The Tiger King). Additionally, the artist who makes our miniatures has made a toilet paper trumplin, and the 3D model is available for free!

Is there a setting for Florida? I've been wanting to do a Florida man game for awhile.

There are definitely the tools for creating Florida here, and a couple references to Florida Man scattered throughout, there's a couple cities laid out on the Map, one of which is Idolando. As of now Florida is not, however, a fully fleshed out setting in this book. Possibly will be in future books though, depending on how this one does.

I love the book. That said there appears to be at least two mistakes, in the magic items section there are two items that are given illustrations but no effect; namely the burger and french fries on page 116, and the "iPad" like device on page 118.

Unless perhaps I am missing something?

You are truly eagle-eyed for catching that. Those works of art were part of a collection we commissioned ahead of writing the stats for all of the items, with the intention of "having more art than we need" so we had some sort of back-up art pieces. We never wound up creating items based on them (though the tablets are mentioned early on in the book, I believe in Chapter 1, as being related to writwits).

Nevertheless, AMAZING catch and a keen eye for detail. Hope this answers your question!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
