Beyond the kingdom of Aruanda, there is an untamed land. It is a place where witches walk, where goblins cavort, where the borders between the mortal and fey realms grow thin. For some, it is a place of unspeakable wonder; for others, only madness and death lie within its trackless depths.

It is the Runewild, and it is beautiful and cruel.

The Runewild is a dark fairy tale sandbox setting for use with the 5th Edition of the world’s most popular roleplaying game. Designed for character levels 1 through 10, it provides locations, encounters, and NPCs to support a campaign lasting months or years, or to be adapted into other campaigns. This book includes:

  • A history of the Runewild and its surrounding settlements
  • 150 detailed encounter areas for player characters to explore
  • 21 maps (included as separate files for virtual tabletops)
  • 8 new Backgrounds and a new Feat: Fey-Touched
  • 21 unique magic items (like witch embers and the staff of clarity and confusion)
  • 32 new monsters (including clockwork dwarves, fey lions, giant forest sloths, and the terrifyingly beautiful Golden Bodach)
  • Detailed descriptions of the histories, motivations, and weaknesses of the witches of the Runewild, including the Whitebone Sisters; Missus Switch, the swine hag; Korthsuva, the Witch of Hours; and the Hag Queen Griselda, Mother of Ogres
  • New optional rules for exploration and resting
  • Advice for running a sandbox campaign
  • Dozens of random tables designed to help GMs make a Runewild campaign their own

Hi William,

I'm sorry to hear that. That sounds like something to contact DriveThru directly about. I suggest their contact form here:

Happened to me too. I sent a ticket to Drive Thru and they resolved the issue in a matter of minutes.

Hey, any chance this is coming up in PF2e? I was ready to buy it, but then was wondering if it would work.

It's very likely yes. We've already put out three of the four Seasons of the Runewild adventures for PF2, with the final one coming this summer. We'll probably convert the main book too, though we're not sure when yet.

Good to hear. There's a dearth of non-Paizo content for PF2. One of the reasons I haven't bothered changing over yet.

Just so you're aware, encase you haven't been updated.

Pathfinder 2E this year has a ton of content coming out 2nd party.
Battlezoo by Roll for Combat is fantastic wealth of stuff thats pretty balanced
NoNat1 is releasing Sinclairs soon too. That promises to be a great book.

I'm staring at these guys to hopefully launch stuff too. Because their content is great.

Hi Bill (if you check this or get email notifications from here), few questions:

-I have a group of brand new players to 5e and have homebrewed a world literally Fey+Fairytales, called the Lorewood (which was my very on the nose name for the storywood, where FT's and fey magic co-exist). I saw your product (as well as Grymmworld) and am planning on purchasing both to supplement my HB.

My questions are thus:

1. Because my PCs are brand new, I wanted them in a forest to sort of 'railroad' them into encounters/plot, since sandbox can be very risky with newbies (when they are expecting a lord of the rings story to chug chug along, lol). Will I lose much in the way of mechanics, if I ignore the hex system altogether for my current group?

2. How much Fairy Tale Vs. Fey would you say Runewild is? Are the references so subtle that the average non-literary nerd might miss them?

3. Could you (if it's not a spoiler I guess?) list which fairy tales from contemporary...See more

Mark B:

Thanks for checking out the Runewild!

1. Most of the hexes include connections to other hexes, so you could easily pull those out and string them together into short campaign, if you're not interested in the sandbox approach. (My home group, for example, spent most of their lower levels pursuing the infamous bandit king, Ianto the Red, who's mentioned in a dozen or so hexes.)
2. The Runewild draws heavily from fairy tales, but I tried to make the setting evoke the feeling of fairy tales without referencing any story directly. So, while there's no literal Sleeping Beauty, there IS a beautiful maiden in an enchanted slumber (spoiler: you may not want to wake her up).
3. See #2. If it's a fairy tale, it's probably in the Runewild's DNA. Sometimes the allusions are subtle, sometime less so.
4. Unfortunately, the Runewild Campaign Setting + Seasons of the Runewild "omnibus" was a Kickstarter exclusive. I'd suggest picking up one of the Seasons adventures...See more

Got it, have skimmed all and read some, and it looks great. Some really creative thinking went into it. I love how it has that "fairy tale" feel, but it's also dark and gritty, without being gratuitously so.

Big question: is there a forum somewhere for discussing it, other than here? A Discord chat channel? I'd love to share questions/ideas with creators and fans.

Hi David!

This is Bill Fischer, author of the Runewild. Thank you for the kind words! That mix of darkness and whimsy was exactly what I going for when I created the Runewild, so I'm glad you enjoyed it.

I know that Sneak Attack Press has some plans in motion, but in the meantime you can check out my blog at or email me at I'd love to hear more feedback!

Late KS Backer here. So far it looks great! Thank you for the hard work.

My only request at this stage is a 'clean' world map without the encounter event numbers. If this would be possible that would be great!

Just added that to the Player Map zip (two in fact, one with grids, and one without.)

Is this available in print anywhere? If not, any chance of a POD?
Customer avatar
Matthew H April 09, 2020 8:42 pm UTC
It will be. We normally release the PDF first and give it a few weeks to get a chance to spot any typos before dong finalizing the POD version.

When print is available we'll also send a coupon to anybody who got the PDF version with a discount equal to the PDF price, so customers who get the PDF early don't end up paying more.

That's generous and makes picking this up an easier decision. Is there something similar made for the Shadowfell?
Customer avatar
Matthew H April 15, 2020 3:50 am UTC
Not currently anything for Shadowfell, but that's an good idea of something for us to think about.

Aldrich W April 09, 2020 3:30 pm UTC
Does this include basically all of the previous runewild settings? Goblin Market? Seasons of the runewild?
Customer avatar
Matthew H April 09, 2020 5:34 pm UTC
It includes the Goblin Market, but does NOT include the Seasons on the Runewild adventures.

Aldrich W April 14, 2020 11:58 pm UTC

POD should be available in a few weeks. When it is we'll also send a coupon to anybody who got the PDF version with a discount equal to the PDF price, so customers who get the PDF early don't end up paying more.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
