The rain-slick streets gleam like silver on a circuit board and holographic signs paint the metroplexes in a river of neon. The city stretches as far as the eye can see, from the toxic coast to the city limits where the walls keep the wasteland from encroaching. Despite advances in technology most people continue to live as cogs in a machine, distracted from their ineffectual lives by slick consumerism and invasive media.

You are a cyberpunk, a desperate individual with valuable skills, willing to put your life on the line in return for a little cash, reputation or leverage. With a lot of effort and a little luck you may survive the dangerous streets long enough to fulfill your goals and escape this life of violence and trouble.

NEON CITY OVERDRIVE is a fast-playing RPG of cyberpunk action. With a focus on story and action, character creation is fast and the rules are intuitive. Create any kind of cyberpunk character you want and throw them into the action within minutes.

  • Simple, intuitive D6 dice pool system
  • Create any kind of cyberpunk you can imagine
  • Broad sandbox setting and random tables help make the setting your own

NEON CITY OVERDRIVE supplements

The character creation section is a little confusing. I found the letter size character sheet on your website and that helped a little. Breaking the Trademarks into categories was also a little confusing at first but I think I figured it out: Background is a category of Trademarks, Arcology Brat is that Trademark, for example. Now there are five spots for Trademarks on the character sheet, and five categories of Trademarks, but I only get three Trademarks, correct? Also, the list of Triggers after each Trademark: do I pick four for each Trademark or four total? Finally, is there a list of Edges somewhere? I'm not sure how the Triggers translate into Edges.

An example of character creation would also be very helpful.

Thanks in advance - this is a beautiful book - the art, color, layout. I really want to figure out how this works!

As I'm digging in deeper, I'm finding the answers to my own questions. Sorry, I should have done that before I asked. This is really a cool game, Nathan!

Thank you!
Just in case anyone else is unsure about character gen, I will attempt to answer your queries anyway.

1. Each character begins with three Trademarks. The book divides them into categories for organisation / ease of finding concepts BUT these have no bearing on what you can choose. The supplements even add more categories (!). Just pick three trademarks you think are cool.

2. Each trademark has a list of triggers that show the kinds of things that concept can do. They give “permission” for your character to attempt stuff. Your trademarks automatically have all the listed triggers (and you can change/adjust/re-write them if you want). The triggers don’t add bonus dice, but tell you when you should use that particular trademark for actions.

3. Characters begin with four edges. They can be attached to any trademark (two in on trademark, one in another and one in a third, for example; or all four edges under one trademark; etc.) An edge will add +1 action...See more

HI! Looking to buy, but was wondering if there was any chance of a wee bundle deal for core, psions and skinjobs on the way?
Customer avatar

PUBLISHER
Hi, thanks for the question. There will be a bundle, but not for at least a month. (I am hoping to coincide it with the PODs being available for all products.) At that time the price of the core rules and supplements will go up to their “full” price, and the bundle will only save you a couple of dollars over what you will pay now for the individual PDFs.

What is the difference between Trigger and Edge?
Customer avatar
Nathan R May 12, 2020 1:22 am UTC
PUBLISHER
Think of a trigger as granting “permission” - they are the sorts of things a trademark can do. If you attempt something that is listed as / covered by triggers then use that trademark for the action (and give yourself an Action die for that trademark). Edges are “specialisations” - things you are quite good at. A relevant edge will grant an extra Action die, on top of the die you get for the trademark.
For example, all Bounty Hunters have the awareness trigger so you could use that trademark when you try to spot/notice something (getting +1 action die for “Bounty Hunter”). If your bounty hunter has the edge “awareness” then you would get +2 action dice for spotting stuff: one for the trademark and one for the edge.
I hope this helps.

I have taken down POD for a short time in preparation for adding the minor updates that were included in a previous PDF update. These are simple typo fixes and 3 sentence changes and do not in any way affect the usability or enjoyment of the book for those who previously purchased hardcopies.

Hi Rick, the POD books don’t have the (very) small change that I put into the PDF this morning. Fear not, the three sentences I added don’t change any rules - I popped them in simply because I had to update the PDF anyway (due to a wrong hyperlink). I will put together a FAQ /errata with those additions.

For anyone else wondering / thinking about getting the hard copies, they will be updated but not for at least a month, as every change to the POD requires another round of proofing.

I have a soft cover version of the updated book being prepared for proofing now and when it is ready (closer to May) I will make it available and take down the hardback POD. It will not be available again until closer to June.

I assure you, the current POD books are not missing anything that affects your ability to play and enjoy Neon City Overdrive. The changes were three short sentences, on three different pages, that add a little extra explanation of a given rule. A FAQ is coming.

Something I would like clarification on: It isn't stated explicitly, but ithe rules for special gear and some of the discussions here seem to indicate that special gear does not "roll over" between missions; if a player does exceedingly well on a roll and gets a dynamite piece of special gear, it disappears at the end of the job (mechanically) and if he want that same piece of gear in the future he will need to succeed on another roll. Is this correct? BTW, I love this game.
Customer avatar
Nathan R April 09, 2020 10:59 pm UTC
PUBLISHER
Correct. The intent behind the rule is to give players some flexibility between jobs without bogging the game down in money and equipment lists.
It also replicates the fact that gear gets lost, broken, superseded and replaced in the consumer-driven, disposable future.

I noticed the change to the PDF based on this clarification. Just tossing this out there, I was thinking that if I as a GM allowed a player to keep a piece of Special Gear, I would charge them 1 Leverage or Stash to do so, and have them write it down on the back of their sheet in a sort of stasis locker. There after, if they wanted to use that piece of gear on a mission they could do so, but would either need to pay 1 Stash (to get it out of hock, do maintenance on it, 3d print it again, etc) or they would only get three rolls for Special Gear to balance it out.

hello. good job.
Just to be sure I have correctly understood.
In a roll whit 3 action and 3 danger dice. If I roll 2-4-5 and 1-2-6 the 6 on the danger die cancel out the five on the action die or not?
Customer avatar
April 09, 2020 3:37 pm UTC
PURCHASER
The way i read it. The 2 on danger die cancels the 2 on action die (leaving the 4 and 5 left, thus using 5 as the result). Though it would be cool to house rule the effects of a 6 rolled on a danger die not only would cancel a 6 on an action die but add complication or cancel out the next highest result on action die. Justvmy thoughts.
Customer avatar
Nathan R April 09, 2020 9:18 pm UTC

^^ This reply is correct. Danger dice only cancel MATCHING action dice. A 6 on a danger die would only cancel a 6 on an action die.

By all means, house rule the 6's on danger dice, though I am not sure your players will thank you! :D

Thanks for helping to clarify rules with other players. Much appreciated.

This system sounds awesome! But I would like a little clarification regarding combat as I seem to have confused myself

Do I re-roll initiative at the beginning of each "turn" or "round" of combat? It says on a 1-3 the enemies go first, but what if there are five of them and only two players? Do all of the bad guys take their individual turns before the players?
Customer avatar
Nathan R April 08, 2020 10:17 pm UTC
PUBLISHER
Yes, combat is broken into turns, during which every character/enemy gets to act. At the start of each turn make a roll to see if the enemy or characters act first. On a 1-3 all the enemy act, then the player characters. On a 4-6 all the characters act, then the enemy.
This was a design choice to keep things quick and simple - the GM doesn't have to track individual initiative. If players act in order "around the table" things are very straightforward. This initiative system can also be deadly as it is possible for the enemy to get "two turns in a row" if they act second one turn and first the next.

Having said all that, if you have lots of enemy and want to divide them into smaller "groups", go right ahead. In this case, roll for each group and on a 1-3 the group acts before the players and on a 4-6 the group acts after them. Likewise, if you only want to roll once at the start of a combat, you can do that too. Like everything in Neon City overdrive, do what works...See more

Thank you very much for the clarification!

I have only one more question, in character generation under the third step it says "pick four edges and write them next to the relevant trademarks"

So do the players pick four edges in total across their three trademarks for a total of 4? Or four from each one for a total of 12 edges?
Customer avatar
Nathan R April 08, 2020 10:35 pm UTC
PUBLISHER
Four in total. There is a little more clarification on page 18, underneath the example.

You can also give your character up to four more edges (for a total of 8) by crossing out drive track boxes and reducing your stunt point maximum (page 23). This is a great way to boost your specific skills, at the cost of flexibility.

Hope this helps!

I get the same vibe that I used to get when I bought my first copy of R Talsorian Games' Cyberpunk v 1.0, when it was just a slimline little game book with a plain black cover, with a feel akin to buying one of the underground druggie comix that were prevalent at the time.

Cyberpunk should be like that - the weird and forgotten places in between, the abandoned buildings taken over by squatters, the Walled Cities, the mesh networks, the Dark Web communities and economies; the hacker communes operating out of the back rooms of deconsecrated megachurches, hijacking the airwaves to beam subliminal-laced strobing screaming sedition into the eyeballs of viewers across the globe; the ecology of the street, rather than the arcology.

I guess I prefer my cyberpunk to have a Ramin Djawadi theme than some screaming death metal. Too many wannabe punks bring their video game music preferences, and those games' predilection towards violence. Cyberpunk should be about surviving despite the odds.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
