I am quite pleased with how the recent errata has addressed many of the core issues with the product. Some things remain a bit broken- such as starting gold, and I remain suspect of the probabilities given to freshly created characters when attempting their specialities. Otherwise, pretty much everything worth correcting has been. I am happy to see the system for stealth actually finished, and some weight given to the lethal/non-lethal choice that powers the source material. I have removed my one-star review, replaced it with a 4-star rating, and when I get the chance to properly gather my thoughts I will write a full review reflecting my current and likely final thoughts.

So the core system seems more polished? If so, great! How are the Void powers? Any updates/additions to the suite of powers? Have the bonecharms been given more details?

The Void powers are still the same number they were before, unfortunately, but the reintroduction of a Mana system means non-player characters can use them again- and a few of them have received more polish to line up with the rest of the system. A minor example is Far Reach, which now adheres to the range system that Blink uses rather than being the sole outlier that measures itself in feet. There seems to be an intent to include more powers and advanced options in a future supplement, which is a good runner-up but we'll have to see about the quality of future releases.

The bone charms were one of the highlights of the initial release, and remain just as good- with a system for how many you can use that matches the games pretty well. Overall it's the core system that saw the most tweaks, clarifications, and general polish- such as explaining how the Stealth track is actually measured, cleaning up some combat stuff (though I remain sceptical of keeping the base Difficulty for all ranged attacks at...See more

At the moment, nothing. You'd probably be better served by sticking with Blades at this point. The system remains shoddy, with no word on the fixes we got told were on the way. The world details in the book are nice, but most of it, if not all and more, seems to be available on the wiki all the same. Void Powers being tailored to the setting already are nice, but, you'll be lucky if you can use them.

I dont think its awful, well its not great either and there is more than few problems. It feels little rushed. So Dishored is full nice art, and i think most art in book is concept art. Why there is no pictures about archtypes? Or really not at playing the game chapter at all? Rules feel little like 2d20 at powered by apocalpse, but there is really not examples. It would nice if you got list of players truths. Same about stealthing: You should use stealth meter, ok just give couple good exsamples how. Equipment is really lacking. So i dont need to know details every different type sword or pistol. They do same thing. But were are the harpoons, light walls and whale technology? What living costs, how much is bottle of whiskey? And speaking of whales, were are stats for ships and seabattles, and whale oil?

They are speaking of naval combat and its storytelling game but it would hurt give me some examples how you could do this. World part is the best part, there nice seeds for adventures and so on....See more

Question about void powers on npc's
do they have there own voidpoint pool for using powers or do i use chaos to make them use these powers?
i cant seem to find any information about how powers work for npc's
Customer avatar
David R April 28, 2020 6:28 am UTC
No information on how NPC's use void powers. Chaos is probably the best way to go (for antagonists). If it's an ally NPC, to see how use of void powers fits the narrative for that scene.

I found a few more problems with the rules. Being able to choose between killing and disabling a target is not a real choice as there is no reason to kill over disable. I was thinking this could be fixed by adding difficulty to attacks with lethal weapons (I'd consider Cudgels and Knuckledusters non-lethal), or maybe non-lethal attacks require the Carefully Style exclusively.

I also noticed that it doesn't specify when attacks are a skill test or a contest. I feel like it's implied that you can't defend against a range attack, but I'm not 100% sure.

The rules for counter attack are also dodgy. It says "If you’re defending against an attack, and win the contest, you may spend Momentum to counter-attack—normally 2" but what does that 2 refer to? Momentum?

Lastly, I also found the emptying of the stress track after a scene too easy. Obviously death shouldn't come easily, but that feels kind of rediculus. Maybe tie it to something like Sokolov's Elixir, which I...See more

Agree with the first point: as going non-lethal is generally the most rewarding outcome, it should ask some efforts for the PCs, beyond the obvious fact that their enemy might stand and confront them later. As a GM, I'll judge on the fly: if the action described by the players are obviously brutal or careless, I might just decide to let their targets die regardless of their choice (perhaps by spending some chaos rather than earning some in result of the killing).

A game designer replied to a question similar to the second point on the official forum, so I expect we will find the clarifications within the next update of the document. In short: you can defend against a range attack if that makes sense narratively (either you're very close to a cover, or the opponent is shooting at close range, allowing you to grab the weapon somehow). In contrast, not all melee attacks are contests, for instance if you're striking someone who can't actively defend in melee.

Regarding the counter attack,...See more

I've heard the Authors are reading discussions for feedback. In that case I have some. Currently I'm not done reading through this, but here are three things I'd like to see.

First, the bookmarks don't work. They all take you to the front cover. This is really annoying.

Two, page numbers don't line up when you're trying to read this on a phone. As an example, it thinks page 35 is page 39 when searching for the latter.

Finally, I find it a real missed opportunity that the the Heart of a Living Thing isn't an artifact of the void. I could easily see it being used as a way to make a Truth about the past of a person or place. If it can't fit, that's fine but I'd really like to see an entry about it.

I agree Austin G
I also haven't seen any updates to rules yet, just typo's etc and some important details left out, have been added.
I have two more suggestions that I think may help:
1) There is no mention of faction affiliation in character generation or recommendation of the starting Faction Rating. The char creation could read: choose a faction (one only) and start with a faction rating / score of 1 [out of 5...]

2) Faction Affiliation does not appear on the character sheet. It is an essential part of the game and the flavour of the system. But thought the character sheet could have a section stating Faction and Level/Rating (i.e.1-5 [for most])

I have sent this in addition to other suggestions to Modiphius!

There hasn't been any major rules tweaks since the initial update that came with the errata form. My error report has been sent, it just remains to be seen what they fix and what they leave. While functional, the game still has holes and many areas where it could explain itself better (such as the various tracks, gaining contacts, etc). It also leaves out major setting details like the Seven Strictures or a proper explanation of the calender (days) and stuff like the Fugue Feast.

Many things like the NPC stats and the number of focuses you split points between remain off, and until we see a major improvement/the final release, I don't think I'll be adjusting my rating. It's too soon to say.

Also. Proper bookmarks that aren't badly automated.

I have preordered the 'trees version' Modiphius and have the pdf. Then game is an interesting and more narrative take on the 2d20 system, even more so than STA. However, it appears that the system may not have been extensively play-tested. A big concern is that the dishonored universe (and playing the PC games) action and combat are fairly central. The combat system is somewhat broken. The stress track is very inflexible, and damage is always the same (dependent on your weapon) and not affected by generating momentum, whereas other ‘tracks’ appear to be affected by moment generation. This is not clearly stated in the rules for the stress track (and probably should be). Making matters worse are that many NPC adversaries, are notable adversaries (like your city watch guard. Meaning you don’t kill them easily and they have a ‘stress track’/HP like characters’), with significantly more stress (or hit points) than the characters. This detracts from making the charterers shine, makes combat/action more linear...See more
Customer avatar
Hendrik N April 05, 2020 8:53 am UTC
Don't forget that Minor Adversaries do not have stress tracks and therefore are killed with the first hit (there is an optional rule that allows them to survive one successful attack on p. 225), so killing swiftly definitely is possible in this game. Only Notable adversaries get stress tracks like player characters do, and there should never be too many of them around.

I probably would have made ordinary city watch members minor, though - as given in the book, they are notable adversaries and can pose quite a threat.
Customer avatar
David R April 05, 2020 10:08 am UTC
Agreed. I would definitely make city watch members minor adversaries. Most of the other major adversaries make sense. Tall boys have a lot of stress- so will never be prone to killing swiftly. Would be good if there was a narrative element that modifies damage (i.e. stealthy attack could almost always be lethal or affected by narrative combination of skill and style, rather than just 3HP damage if you wielding a sword). But as said this is easy to house rule by making stress track similar to how the other tracks are described (in ticking off more boxes with moment build)

The most recent update is definitely an improvement. Throughout the month I plan to submit error reports through the provided email in the errata document, to clear up things like a lack of Sokolov's Elixer, no starting ammunition (meaning e.g. if you buy a pistol you don't get bullets for it, and wont be able to afford any from character creation despite the lowered cost), the extremely low starting coin and the imbalance of certain Archetype features.

Pleasantly surprised by the response from the Dishonored 2d20 team, and if this trend of improvements keeps up I will be reconsidering my 1-star rating. The lack of many Void Powers is still a bit of a concern, but easily homebrewed and less of a flaw than broken numbers.

A handful of their recent releases have been as disappointing as this one. Fall of London for Vampire: the Masquerade 5th Edition, as an example, contained references to mechanics that no longer exist in the current edition. Not to mention placeholder text in bios, characters having powers beyond their ratings or in impossible number, direct contradictuons to the core rules, and more besides.

Even the pregens, as simply made as following the corebook's character creation process, contain multiple errors. Modiphius' response was basically to ignore people, and in at least one instance, deny that many errors existed. No plans to revise that book, and even if they did it would make all the pre-order physical copies uselees. The pre-order copies that were made the ONLY option for getting the PDF at first, despite no/minimal changes between it and the final release.

TL;DR Modiphius' quality control has taken a nose dive, and the fact they keep scoping out licenses is concerming, because this...See more

While I wait for the review timer to let me leave a more formal rating, I would like to make a comment which spells out a number of my issues with this product. But to start with the good, the setting material (especially Dunwall) is fantastic and the bonecharms are colourfully unique. That is about all I have to say positively about this product, given the numerous typos and careless mistakes that have inflated the 2d20 system's Difficulty, or just generally made this product more difficult to enjoy.

I like rules-lite RPGs, and the 2d20 system carried the momentum necessary to replicate the good feelings of Dishonored. But, it seems that there was not a great amount of understanding about how it works, leading to elements of this product feeling tacked-on or unpolished. Compared to other 2d20 entries, such as Conan, the game's systems are stripped down and barely functional. A 3-step character creation, instead of the 10-ish of Conan. Saves time and space, yes, but at the cost of polish and feeling...See more

What’s weird is how Corrupted bonecharms are in there but have absolutely no guidance or rules as to how they’re made. Add in missing Void powers and that section...arguably one of the most anticipated...is very lackluster. There also needs to be something about how non-Marked people use magic, which many do. That’s a huge oversight.

Can somebody tell me how the Void-Powers/Gifts from the Outsider are explained?
In the Lore there are 8 or 9 people EVER who received their powers directly from the Outsider. If it's possible to get access to those powers in the RPG there would need to be an explanation why suddenly a lot more people were "chosen". I never liked this in the videogames and need to know how it's handled here before I invest in the PDF.

They are rather poorly defined. It doesn't seem expected that you will have many people who get Marked. There are so few powers that you start to overlap with even 2 people in the group. The Outsider's Mark is just kinda there, and you can swap one of your starting Talents for it.

I agree with Marco R in pretty much all of what he is saying. It is a rules light-ttrpg. With a lot of room to do what you want really. Or just go with it as it is, depending on how you feel and see things.
I personally will faten up my game a little with my own stuff, but still, i feel this is a more narrative driven game, wich is fine by me.
Too much rules tend to bring any game down, that is my opinion anyway. If you are looking for a simulation in every aspect or even a 5e or even a more rules heavy game, this might not be your thing.

But, i would like too see some changes in future updates of the PDF as well as before printing the final physical book; more equipment and things like that.

AND put togehter a more obvious "common thread" or even highlighted steps on how to make your PC, i think that could get a lot better.

All in all, i think this is a great product, and i love it, a lot!

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
