Brindlewood Bay

Watermarked PDF

Brindlewood Bay is a roleplaying game about a group of elderly women—members of the local Murder Mavens mystery book club—who frequently find themselves investigating (and solving!) real-life murder mysteries. They become increasingly aware that there are supernatural forces that connect the cases they are working on and, in particular, a cult dedicated to the dark, monstrous aspect of the goddess Persephone will come to vex them.

The game is directly inspired by the television show Murder, She Wrote, but also takes inspiration from the works of H.P. Lovecraft, “cozy” crime dramas, and American TV shows from the ‘70s, ‘80s, and ‘90s.

@Jason C. I am creating a sci fi mod of Brindlewood Bay and am thinking of putting it on Drivethrurpg for purchase. I want to make sure I am conforming to any intellectual property or attribution. Are you allowing mods, is it OK to mention that it is a mod of BB, and what attribution, etc. would be good? Thanks for any input.

BTW: Brindlewood Bay is probably one of the best, most fun games that I have played in my 30 years of RPG experience. It is so freaking cool!

Thanks for the kind words! BBay doesn’t have a license or SRD at the moment, but this message is your permission to make and sell your hack. Don’t use any of our color (places and characters) but you’re otherwise good to go.

So, if you were playing this, what bits would you share with the players? Would you let them read the Brindlewood Bay PDF, which mentions the overarching conspiracy and names it? Or would you just let them see the character sheets, maven moves, and reference sheet and keep the rest of it secret?

Tell them about the conspiracy during set-up, as in the procedure at the end of the book.

I've made a Google Sheets version of the character sheet for online play, if anyone is interested:

Anyone hacked this to remove the occult/lovecraftian stuff? I wanna run this for my mom

I'd say you hardly need to hack it. If you keep complexity around 5 or 6 you can run it as a one-shot and you can just ignore the void clues and remove the relevant Maven Moves. Makes for a great cozy mystery.

I got this through a Gauntlet membership (Patreon reward), so I can't leave a rating. But, I just wanted to say that it is worth the $10. My favorite mystery game I've ever run. Very sweet, very low prep, and has a nice dark lining/underbelly that gives it teeth. It has a low page count which is great for folks already comfortable with PbtA, but you might be a little confused if you've never run a PbtA game before.

Works very well for a short series / campaign (think 6 to 8 sessions), as there is a very cool system that let's you collect clues for your active mystery, as well as clues for the "Void Mystery." After you collect enough "void clues" you'll be able to attempt to discover the dark corruption that is threatening your cozy seaside town of Brindlewood Bay.

Please note, these mysteries do not have a SINGLE correct answer. The game is more Genre-Emulation (Story Game) than Mystery Simulation (Trad Game). Each group will *probably* find a different suspect; this...See more

Any chance this will go POD?

There are no plans for POD at this time.

Looks really good, but I strongly prefer a physical book. I hardly ever use any of the PDFs that I have, so I'm passing on this for now. I totally understand the complications of offering a physical version, but if it ever does have a POD option, I'll buy it in a heartbeat!

RE: Printed copy: The PDF includes a version formatted for booklet printing. If you have a printer, you can use that to print your own copy in booklet format, fold in half, then use a long reach stapler (~$20 on Amazon) to bind it. If you want to get fancy, print the first sheet onto cardstock. Voila! Print copy!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
