I have been watching the 3d6DTL campaign and have just prepared to launch my own campaign. I noticed they used a couple of cool hand drawn maps of Burdock's Valley and the ruined city. Are they in the book somewhere because for the life of me I cannot find them.

3d6DTL had them made for themselves. They are not in the book.

It's written for OSRIC, the retro-clone of 1st Edition. The conversion between 1st Edition and Basic (which is OSE) is very minor.

Creators of Arden Vul, the table for undead in the steps in the Pyramid of Thoth (Vol. 1 P. 109) states that there is supposed to be a location of where the undead originates from. I believe that this info is missing from the table? Do you have the information somewhere in a manuscript per chance, or do you remember what placements were to be?

very good eyes, Patrick! It looks like in layout an entire column disappeared. Here's what the ms says. For d10 roll =1, undead appear at UP-6; for 2, it's UP-6; for 3 and 4, it's UP-7; for 5 and 6, it's UP-8; for 7 and 8, it's UP-9; and for 9 and 10, it's UP-10.

This is one of the most stunning achievements I've ever seen in megadungeon design. Massive kudos to everyone involved! I'm planning on recording an actual play series of Arden Vul for my YouTube channel 3d6 Down the Line https://www.youtube.com/c/3D6DownTheLine, using OSE/BX rules. In order to make the vids look extra pretty, could you share what font is used for the front cover text?

Hey, I just watched Episodes 0 and 1 of your Arden Vul play sessions, looks like you have a fun group!
I wanted to thank you for posting the dropbox with the isometric arden vul maps...those are really well done. Anyone planning on running Arden Vul should get these, they really bring the place to life.
If you are interested, I and another guy have collated a bunch of dungeondraft maps of the arden vul levels. He's hosting them on a google drive, his reddit name is _sterno_ (with the underscores). I think there are currently 10 or so levels hosted there, including all of the upper ones, and an arden vul ruined city map I made.

Loving the book(s) and I am playing it with my group over Foundry VTT at the moment. We are having a great time!

One piece of feedback: the fact that plate mail is not manufactured and used by the general public is kinda buried in the book. I can imagine that most players and DMs will allow plate armor to be bought and used at initial character creation and then only later will the DM realize that most non-ancient peoples in the setting will lack it and that the players shouldn't have been able to buy it.

A statement on plate armor in the Arden Vul setting should be placed in the beginning of the book, and probably also restated often throughout.

My thoughts!

I am having lots of fun running the setting in Foundry! I create my own abbreviated notes for the rooms decriptions and add the most frequent random tables to the VTT. I also add statted NPCs, with gear and spells, so that they are easier to manage during play.

I am using the official VTT maps: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/309717/The-VTT-Maps-of-Arden-Vul.

A commentator has given some feet pixel per feet approximations, so you get some help there to adjust them in the program.

There are sometimes elements on the player maps that should have been hidden but a quick pass in Photoshop or MSPaint can fix most of it.

Probably too late to help you, but I'm running this for VTT as well (first Fantasy Grounds, then switched to Foundry) and I've been "remaking" some of the maps in Dungeondraft as I go.

I completed about a third of level 4 last week (the area right down the stairs for the Set Temple on level 3) and will be starting on part of level 5 (around the Obsidian Gates) this week.

My players spent a few months on level 2 and 3, but they're finally moving out now so I expect to be making quite a few new maps soon. I'll drop all new maps in that folder, so just check it periodically for updates.

And if anyone else wants to get in on this and share any VTT maps they created, let's get all our maps together! It's a huge dungeon and converting the maps for VTT is a giant undertaking that would go easier with some crowdsourcing!

When I run this (not sure when, but it will happen), we will be using Pathfinder 1e rules with a fair bit of 3pp material (Ultimate Spheres of Power, Spheres of Might, Spheres of Guile and the two combination-Gish books, plus Path of War)...

There is a Conversion Guide done by Infinium Games, available on Drive Thru. One of the versions you can convert to and from is OSR, which this would likely be close to. You can convert to Pathfinder 1e, Pathfinder 2e, 3.x and 5e, I think there were a couple more options for conversions but that's all I remember off the top of my head.

Thanks for the query, Rachael. It's a fun question, but according to 1st edition rules, resurrection only works for those dead 10 years per level of the cleric, and both of those persons have been dead for many centuries; it seems unlikely that a cleric could be high enough level to resurrect them.

I've come back to Arden Vul after putting it aside for a bit. I have to admit its size makes the challenge of prep feel a bit intimidating.
From what I can tell from reading online it was run at first using the Wilderlands setting and gods. Since I own this setting I'm a bit curious about that -- would you mind letting us know where you had set it in the Wilderlands, and what dieties were prominent in home campaigns?

Hi Ken - I'll be eager to hear what you make of it, if you do decide to run it. As for the Wilderlands connection, I love that setting and have, in the past, run small campaigns in it. One of the things I liked about it was the 'kitchen-sink' approach - it took elements from myth, from sci-fi, and elsewhere, and combined it with unique original elements. So in a sense, that mixture was what I was aiming for. And my earliest drafts of AV thus name checked Wilderlands (I used the name Ghanor for an artifact, I imported a bunch of Wilderlands gods wholesale) quite a bit. But I never really intended to drop AV into the Wilderlands; instead, it was intended as a 'tent-pole' dungeon for my home-brew world (much as Rappan Athuk was for NG, or Greyhawk for GG). Once Andreas persuaded me to look into publishing it, and Joe came on board, I realized that the Wilderlands vestiges needed to be removed; that was the moment that I took time to really develop the setting from a top-down, systematic perspective (instead of merely...See more

Hey, thanks for your quick reply!
I plan on running Arden Vul for my next campaign. Right now my two holdups are
1) my group is currently playing in Barrowmaze (different DM) and the entire map has been done up in DungeonDraft and is beautiful to behold, I hope to give Arden Vul a similar treatment, but the scale is intimidating. This wouldn't be an issue absent the ongoing pandemic.
2) there isn't as much detail on the the various religions and their motivations as I would like, especially for the thorcingans. I like to give players of clerics a better understanding of their religion's goals.
3 likewise, more detail on the 7 schools of wizardry , basically more details on things players will ask me about as they are making their PCs.
I would gladly pay more money for a supplement fleshing these things out

Hi Ken - sorry for the delay. I know we have VTT maps for AV, that one could use in Roll20 (I think - I, myself, don't use online platforms so I may be wrong). As for further details, you're a man after my own heart! I'm afraid to say that I don't have such details ready to go. A world book *might* be in the offing, but I have academic stuff to finish first. Thanks for the suggestion, though

I'm setting my own Arden Vul game in the Wilderlands, in my version of Altanis - https://www.blogger.com/blogin.g?blogspotURL=http://smons.blogspot.com/2022/08/arden-vul-and-gosterwick.html&type=blog (some NSFW art) - Mitra & Set fit right in, Lucreon is a possible Set avatar as Set is associated with wealth IMC. Bludgeon Peak in Barbarian Altanis is described as a flat topped mountain with ancient ruins & ziggurat, so made perfect site for AV.

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
