Hi, I bought this awhile ago and I'm trying to find the maps. Are they a seperate product?

Is this going to have a premium print as one volume? Or is the PoD for each part the only way it'll be done?

So, I'm now further into reading this and one thing I'm noticing is that there is way more treasure than I'm used to seeing in an adventure. It's been long enough since I played 1E that I'm not sure whether Arden Vul actually contains more than a typical amount for an OSRIC module, but I'm curious as to what others think. It does seem appropriate for Arden Vul to have a lot of treasure, given the nature of what lies within.

Since I'll be converting this to 5E and not using training rules, I expect I will need to make adjustments, is anyone else doing so?

It may seem like a lot, but 1e expects characters to spend a lot of money training to level up: 1,500 gp per level per week of training (training can last from 1 to 4 weeks). A lot of a character's wealth will go towards that.

I also think that treasure amounts are easily adjusted to fit the DM's preferred style.

Agreed, it's the easiest thing for a DM to change. This product is so massive...I'm still reading through level 3!
A few additional thoughts I've had:
1) I love the writing style in general and also the choice of proper names, they are very evocative. It's obvious that the author is well read, much like Gygax was. Some other reviewers have criticized the verbosity of the adventure and I agree that some of the layout choices made in, for example, Maze of the Blue Medusa (inset small maps co-located with room descriptions, summary at the start of what is immediately seen, etc) would be useful, since the manuscript is so large. But , I disagree with the assertions made elsewhere that any of the writing is extraneous -- it's very valuable to me as a DM to know what a chamber used to be used for, for example, and it helps form a cohesive picture of the place in the mind of the DM.

2) I expect that anyone running this now will be using a virtual tabletop. While it would be a massive...See more

Ken - I hope to produce some of these ancillary materials (world book, some other small adventures, etc.), but realistically they won't be ready for some time. I do have a lot of unfinished materials that I could share in one spot. This summer I hope to get my ardenvul.com site up and running (beyond the shell that is now), so that might help

Hey, I've now read most of Arden Vul and am in the middle of producing a player guide for my campaign.
I notice that orcs and half-orcs are not mentioned in the manuscript at all. Do orcs exist in the world of Arden Vul?
Customer avatar
Richard B May 14, 2020 2:58 pm UTC
Ken - you're very observant. :-) I don't know that in my home campaign I've ever definitively decided that there are no orcs, but I did consciously try to construct AV such that the typical humanoids (other than goblins) were not so heavily featured. In my home campaign I don't allow half-orcs or gnomes as PCs, which is entirely a personal decision - lots of people love 'em, and I understand why. But when I set up the campaign I wanted it to be a bit different. That was long before publishing AV was even a glimmer in my eye. So, while you won't find orcs, half-orcs or gnomes in the published AV, there's nothing to prevent you from deciding that they exist in your version of Magae.

I am currently DM'in this for 5e and I have built about half of level 2 and 1/3 of Level 3 for Roll 20. They are indeed insanely large maps and our roll20 definitely struggles a bit with them, especially since I insist on dynamically lighting everything. We play around a 42" screen set in a table, so at least we don't all need to be rolling our dice via Roll20. The map sets that worked best for me are the Vile Tiles sets by Gabriel Pickard. I don't think I can share my creations for copyright reasons.

Hey,
I've bought and am reading the PDF, congratulations, it is a masterwork!

Question -- are there any plans to release supplemental maps for use with virtual tabletops? For example, maps lacking the map keys and with secret areas removed would be really helpful.

Also, are there any plans to release supplemental materials on, for example, the gods of Magae? Some gods I am familiar with because they are a trope of this genre (Mitra, Set, etc) -- others are new to me. I want to produce a 'campaign guide' for my players, and when I do this I generally write up a few paragraphs on each diety detailing cult practices, locations of major temples, etc.

Thank you so much for this. It was obviously a labor of love!

Somewhere in the Underposts here (3/30), I replied to a comment & noted my use of a short adventure by ERP, (Expeditious Retreat Press). Later the utterance of Motherpussbucket was written & Arden Vul appeared in my library of holding. I also received a note from an Improver of Ideas assuring me that a great deal was in my future. 9 days later (4/9) links appeared which took me the option to buy the hard cover version. I was in a mindset that Printing a Literature were non-essential, a sacrifice to the various gods of pestilence. Spurred by the communication of Richard below & the mysterious Improver of Ideas, I ordered the Hard Copies on 4/12. The fact that my scribe HP did not wish to transcribe the 1100+ pages helped in the decision. I would not have guessed that 4 days later I would have them in my hands.

Ok, so I've been gaming since 1979 when I got my 1st D&D box set. These books take me back there, so much that I broke out my B1 module, (yep I still have it), to compare....See more

Does this product work well with B/X or BECMI rules? Does it requires some adjustments to work with those rules?
Customer avatar

I think this could easily be run in B/X or BECMI. It's written for OSRIC (1st edition) so there are some differences between that and B/X, BECMI, but they are closely related systems.

I laughed when I saw the price.

But then I started looking through the Full-size Preview, and realized that there’s some serious quality here. A few hours later I purchased the pdf.

I’m a slow reader, so this will take a while for me to get through, but I love what I’ve read so far. So earlier today I submitted my order for the five print books (thank you, Joseph, for your quick reply getting me the discount codes). Great job, guys!

Can you provide a black and white map option? The sample here is BW, but the map pack is blue and white. It's difficult to read (which was the point of those old blue maps I think, they came with transparent red filter plastic).

Sorry for a second post, but I just have to say that after another few hours exploring this excellent product, I feel so LUCKY to have purchased this product. There is everything you could want in setting up a campaign with this - such attention to detail and so well executed! This would be a great product with just 20% of the amount of material here (though not at the same price *grin*).

It's like expecting to get the very best sub sandwich you've ever had and you get a full multi-course banquet instead (with multiple sub sandwiches included!).

Bottom line: If you're wavering because of the steep price for the pdf, be assured - you. will. NOT. regret. buying. this.

i really hope someone more articulate will write a review of this product soon because people all over NEED to hear about this.

Wow! just . . . wow!

There is just SO MUCH HERE! I've only just scratched the surface and I feel almost overwhelmed. I can't wait to get deeper into this. I understand that the price might be too high for some, and I had to sacrifice some other projects, but I'm glad I did. If you are a fan of megadungeons, this is DEFINITELY for you.

This was clearly a labor of love. There's a good deal of complexity here with a significant amount of backstory, multiple entry points into the many levels of the dungeons, and will require a significant amount of familiarization and prep by the DM in order to get the best results. Reading through this monster reminded me of those days in 1978 when I was thrilled to see that the Giant series of modules could chain into the Drow series and beyond, for a massive experience for the whole table. The scope of this product really has to be seen to be appreciated. There's no doubt in my mind that the asking price is well worth the amount of content you get.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
