A sorcerer blasting his enemies with the power of his mind. A muscled barbarian wielding a flaming sword against the local tyrant’s thugs. A secret cabal of magicians plotting to control the minds and souls of kings. A gladiator who freed himself from slavery wanders the land, righting wrongs and smashing villains. Big muscles, big swords, eldritch sorcery, powers of the mind, eldritch beasts. From Burroughs to Howard to Moorcock to Italian Peplum films to those dreaming of outlandish post-apocalyptic worlds, heroes raise swords against corrupt nobles, inexplicable sorcerers, and alien monstrosities.

Sword of Cepheus is a roleplaying game in the triple “Sword” genres: Sword and Sorcery, Sword and Planet, and Sword and Sandal. In Sword and Sorcery, often-amoral protagonists face vile sorcery and horrid beasts as they complete awesome adventures for gold and glory. In Sword and Planet, humans finding themselves on barbaric or decadent alien planets use their superior brawn and valiant hearts to win fame, fortune, and the heart of an alien princeling. In Sword and Sandal, often set in a quasi-Biblical or faux-Roman world, men and women with sharp wits and strong sword-arms fight mythological creatures and overthrow tyrants. The common threads of all three genres are the blade-wielding protagonists who use their brawn, as well as brains, to fight foes both supernatural and mundane and undertake hair-raising, violent adventures.

The Sword of Cepheus rules include everything you need to play thrilling sword & sorcery adventures:

  • Streamlined skill-based 2D6 task resolution!
  • Procedural character generation with 12 archetypal careers for your character to undergo!
  • 44 unique character Traits to customize your character!
  • A wide selection of adventuring equipment and weaponry!
  • Simple yet intriguing rules for adventuring and exploring exciting worlds!
  • Fast-paced, action-packed combat - whether on foot, from horseback, or on the high seas!
  • A skill-based, perilous sorcery system, with 108 eldritch spells!
  • 96 terrible monsters for heroes to face!
  • A selection of treasures, both mundane and magical!
  • Detailed gameplay examples for quick and easy comprehension of the rules!!

Raise your sword! Adventures awaits!

Compatible with Cepheus Light, the Cepheus Engine System Reference Document and other OGL 2D6 Sci Fi games.

do you have an errata on some combat questions I have. The dagger can attack twice(pg44), but in the combat section (pg54) you can give up your movement to attack twice. does that mean, in some situations, you can attack 4 (yes four) times with a dagger?
and is their a better forum to ask these questions?
thanks

You should be able to attack twice with the dagger just like with any other weapon. If this is not fixed now, it will be fixed soon.
Feel free to look for the Cepheus Engine groups on Facebook and MeWe and the Traveller Discord channel for further forums :-)

I will preface that I've never played a Traveller game, but after reading through this book and trying to make characters there seems to be some information missing. Like in Character Creation; step 3.2 what skill tables are there to roll on? Are there four? Or Two? I don't know, are "Personal Development" and "Service" part of one table, and "Specialist" and "Advanced Education" part of the second table? Because that's how the tables that are laid out suggest. If they are all four separate tables, when does a character get Personal Development? Is that its own skill table you have to roll on separate from the others? No idea. If all four are meant to be separate tables, why would the layout show one set of numbers for two Skill tables, it saves space, but if they're supposed to be four different tables, then it is extremely confusing if you don't know that, which the book does not explain.

Also the dice notation is extremely confusing: as the levels of a skill...See more

As an addendum: in the character creation example through all the flowery language which paints a poor picture of following the procedural steps: Alazar did not seem to get his second skill roll for being first term sorcerer.

Instead of having so much creative writing in the Character Creation examples, it would be far easier to follow if you listed out step by step as the Character Creation procedure AND THEN write a small story as a summary for the character to show how the Character Creation process creates a background story with citations to the Character Creation procedure step throughout the prose.

This section of Alazar's example feels muddy because it seems to skip the second skill training part of Procedure Step 3.2:
"Josh rolls for survival, making it easily with a 12. The young apprentice gains Science-1, as he learns the ropes of the wizard’s laboratory. He also gains Sorcery-1 as a Rank-0 Sorcerer. He is talented, and advances (rolls 11 + 1 = 12), gaining...See more

Thank you for your input. You have provided us with several points of errata, such as the incorrect number of skills for the first term of the sample characters. This will be corrected in the next revision.

Since the Publishers are very active here, can I ask a few rules questions?
First, overall, I'm very happy that I bought this - great Stormbringer vibes, solid rules (I've been meaning to try out Traveller/Cepheus for a long time, because I tend to like both the narrow curve of 2d6 and lifepath character generation, but I never got around to it).

Anyway, rules questions:
Some combat actions seem not quite clear to me - first of all, is "charge" one Action, or does it take both actions? RAW it looks like it takes only one action, I'm not quite sure if that makes sense.
More impartantly: Overwatch and shields. Under Attack, it says: "a character may ... attach (sp. error in the pdf) once and enter overwatch."; However, under Overwatch, it says: "You may not enter Overwatch if you are engaged in melee combat." While this is not quite contradictory (the first quote could only refer to missile combat, or to situations where you have hust defeated your enemy...See more

Charge should be both Actions for that round. It is like running towards the enemy line waving weapons and yelling - trying to scare them. Once you reach them, you move to normal movement/combat actions.

Regarding Overwatch in melee and with shields:
1. You can't use Overwatch in Melee. Except in that case where the first action dispatches a foe, so you can enter Overwatch on the second action. Or, when not engaged in melee, you may enter Overwatch in anticipation of melee.
2. For shields, we are considering a change to the rules in the next errata correction, where shields will simply provide DM-1 in mobile cover rather than interact with Overwatch.

Hope the Japanese titles are completely deleted (or updated at least) from the Titles of Nobility table...

IIRC, the titles, except Shogun, were all those adapted/translated from European nobility titles after Meiji Era, which means they are nobility titles of modern age in Japan and not suitable for any pseudo/historic feudal Japanese settings.

Besides, Shogun is not quite fit in the line of the nobility titles. Shogun is the highest rank of warriors (bushi/sumurai), not nobility (kuge)...

U r welcome, and thanks to you too, for producing such a wonderful fantasy-themed Cepheus/Traveller compatible rulebook. ;)

If you need, I'll try to list up two sets of "nobility ranks" used in feudal Japan and send to you to update (if you like them and think they are suitable for the rulebook) the table. Pls give me a couple of days, in this case.

Probably, the simplest and elegant way is to just leave the first set of European titles. Gamers can customize the titles as they see fit in their own setting.

Thanks!

P.S. FYR

For samurai hierarchy: Shōgun > Daimyō (Feudal Lord) > Karō (House Elder) > Hatamoto (Upper Vassal) > Gokenin (Lower Vassal)

(Technically, the above ranking order is not exactly accurate, 'cause Hatomoto were Shōgun's direct vassals and Daimyō were feudal lords and once had been competitors for rulership, IIRC)

For nobility, Mikado (Emperor) > Sesshō/Kampaku (Regent) > Daijin (Chancellor/Minister) > Nagon (Counselor) > Sangi (Associate Counselor) > Jige (Lower Nobles)

BTW, Nagon is a collective term of Dainagon, Chūnagon and Shōnagon (Major/Middle/Minor Councelors).

The problem is, the samurai ranks and nobility ranks don't exactly correspond to each other... But heck, most of the gamers won't care xthat much ;p And IMHO, I still think it's better to have those European titles only on the nobility titles table.

I have a question : do the system as such os for high or low fantasy ?
Customer avatar
Omer J February 29, 2020 9:21 pm UTC
PUBLISHER
The system works well for mid-to-low fantasy, as magic is dangerous to cast and, by default, not very commonplace. Think Conan or Elric rather than the World's Most Famous RPG in its newer editions.

This is an error. Originally we intended to include lizardmen and insectoids, but we now have far more detailed ideas for non-humans, which will soon be available as a supplement with 10 (!) species, all with full career tables and mishap/event tables, alongside their special abilities.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
