Mutant: Year Solo

These rules are divided into three sections.

The first is a simple set of game mechanics to allow you to play Mutant:Year Zero without a GM. The rules are tailored to fit in with the native game mechanics of M:YZ and should feel natural.

The second section gathers together some of the most useful tables from the core rules for solo play and makes very minor amendments and additions to them. More random threats to the Ark are provided to fill out the D66 roll and the Random NPC tables are gathered together with the standard NPC tables.

The last three pages include useful record sheets to help you manage your solo games.

Throughout these rules are useful tips and advice on solo role-playing and using these rules.

DriveThruRPG does not support Community Copies. The entire text of this supplement is viewable in the Full-size preview. If you cannot afford the cover price, please feel free to use the preview with my full blessing.

Would this work for GenLab Alpha as well?

Yes. The only thing I would say is that I created some stock NPCs in this book. It would be worthwhile to have a look at that table and recreate it for your GenLab Alpha game. It will save you some time in the long run.

Hi peter. Have you done a solo set for Twilight 2000 4e and if not will you be doing one one or will you do one? Thanks

It is my understanding that T2000 has solo rules in the core rules.

Hey there,
I'm really new to RPG's and as such don't have anyone to play with so this booklet is right up my alley. Does this booklet work alongside all the published material for MYZ? as I am interested in picking up the compendiums and map packs to add to the immersion.

I don't have much of the other material, so I cannot truly say. The hardest thing to use is published adventures. You have to have a working knowledge of the adventure to be able to run it, but that robs you of the surprises that a GM would spring on your character.

You can google How to Solo a module and that will give you plenty of different approaches to try. My favourite option is to run adventures as a GM and control the character using the oracles and dice tools. Typically asking if the character does the most obvious thing, or the most sensible thing. Then playing with as if you are the GM.

There are plenty of different approaches to try though.

After the ‘starting’ pool of XP, how is it handled going forward?

I didn't find a need to change the XP system as written. I was possibly a little generous with XP for myself. I often play shorter solo sessions than I would have done had we got together as a group.
In a solo game, you are always the centre of attention, which means that the focus is always on you and your skills and relationships. This tends to mean that you earn XP faster than members of a group would. If that is a problem then you can cut back on the 1XP per session, as that is what I found accelerated my progression the most.
I never feel the need to be too mean on myself. It is hard being out in the zone, on your own.

Sorry, I wasn't clear in my question. I did not see earning XP explicitly addressed in this booklet as you have done in some of your other works. You did not recommend any specific interval such as number of scenes or sessions. I guess I expected to see something related to XP in the "Housekeeping" portion. No worries. Thanks for the info.

As an aside, do you think I would be able to use these 'rules' to attempt Elysium? Do you think that the whole conflict between houses is a deal breaker in terms of solo play?

I struggled with that. It is probably played better with a human on the other side. Every soloist is different through. Matt Kaye is doing a video series of solo MYZ, it will be interesting to see if he attempts it.

Is there any reason this couldn't be manipulated/adjusted for Tales From the Loop, John Carter or Alien?

Go ahead! I am playing an working on Coriolis and Tales for my own use, and when I think they are good enough I will put them on here.
Alien and John Carter are not part of the Workshop so I would never be allowed to publish anything I create for those game.
The secret is to pull the rules apart and look at each one and think does this need to be scaled back if it just you, with no backup? What works well for a solo character and you can emphasise and what is not so good.
Solo Alien is going to be awesome. This is on my list to play over Christmas. Alone on the Nostromo with the alien is what it is all about. At present, the license will prevent me from sharing anything I wrote.

Symbaroum should be up on Monday. I just need to make a couple of last adjustments.

Licensed games are often a closed door. I was talking to Green Ronin about ASoIaF when they lost the license.

The I will do the other Free League games when I can. They are really fun to play.

Thank you! I will be purchasing your Symbaroum in a couple days! I also backed Vaesen by Free League, and would love a solo adaption when this comes out...hint hint. Sad to hear about no solo adaption for Forbidden Lands. I didn't know there would be a license issue since it is also Free League.

Hi Peter, I think I'm going to pick this up. I don't play this particular game, but I was wondering if you think this would apply to the Fallout Wasteland Warefare RPG theme or system and could it be integrated into other systems? Do you have a blog or a Facebook discussion site? Have you ever thought of making a universal system better than Mythic? Thanks for listening and please comment.

One of the things I value most in solo rules is not having to switch between rules. If I am thinking M:YZ I don't want to have to stop and grab a d100 to use the Mythic rules and then swap back to M:YZ and my d6s. That break seems to shatter my creative flow. That is why I make these system-specific solo rules. Making a universal solo system to go head to head with Mythic may make economic sense with a much bigger audience but it would not be something I would use. So it would be a bit disingenuous to create something I wouldn't play myself.

Regarding other systems, I bought Symbaroum yesterday. I am going to see how many changes would be needed to make these rules work with that system. It could be that a single Zero Engine solo system is the way to go.

I haven't used Fallout Wasteland Warefare so I cannot comment. The entire solo rules are in the quick preview. Take a look and see if they will work for you. As a tip, right-click on the Quick Preview link, open it in a new window or...See more

I like the way you explain the process and have the tables layed out to merge with the dice mechanics of MYZ. I've used Mythic a fair bit and think the method you use would be a quicker way to run a GME. I did notice a few typos but other than that the information is sound. :) I look forward to also trying this with Coriolis and Tales from the Loop which use the same/similar dice. - Just need more free time.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
