Screech!

Peculiar Tales is a role-playing game that combines elements of fantasy, science fiction and film noir.

It takes place on Edemia, a world quite like Earth, but weirder. Taas and Sylvanos are the major continents, the moon is called Nilbog, and the greatest metropolis on the planet is called Clockwork City.

The heroes are the misfits who don’t fit into normal society. These human, elf, ogre and goblin outcasts have decided to take on the life of adventurers. They work outside the system, doing jobs that bring them in frequent contact with the outcomes of mad science gone wrong and the surreal aspects of ancient occult magic. They all have their own reasons for doing what they do, and they wouldn’t have it any other way.

All of this is set against a time of industrial revolution and post-war excess. On Earth, this was the 1920s. It is a time of prohibition, mob bosses, clandestine parties, wild speculations, and foolhardy expeditions.

Hi. You said, "A unique rules system involving playing cards instead of dice. Story-driven play that focuses on cinematic action and investigative mysteries."

Please could you tell us more about how the system works? How specifically does it support cinematic action and investigation?

Hello!

When resolving actions in Peculiar Tales, a player must beat a difficulty rating set by the director using a combination of cards and their player character's skill rating.

As a player, you have access to a deck of cards and a river of face-up cards shared by all players. The goal is to draw high. Playing the right suit for the situation allows for a boost, adding to the skill check. Then, you can use the river cards to further enhance you skill check, provided you have a narrative reason for it (it matches up with your character's motivation or background, for example). This way, a skill check involves a dab of storytelling.

Skill checks are also always significant. There must be something at stake, with tangible consequences for failure. The system is geared towards the "failing forwards" philosophy, meaning failure is never a dead-end, but rather a way to push the plot in unexpected ways.

You get some control over the plot as a player,...See more

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
