The original Ultramodern5 was the most successful non-fantasy ruleset for 5th Edition. This revised sourcebook doubles the content of the original, with revised rules and brand-new mechanics to customize any game.

Ultramodern5 presents races, classes, archetypes, gear, monsters, and scenarios that can be inserted into any campaign. This includes…

Modern Warfare

Space Opera

Wild West

Create a pure science fiction setting or insert any combination of rules into your own fantasy world.

The only limit is your imagination.

  • 10 new races, including aliens, robots, and mutants.
  • A new lifepath system incorporating backgrounds into an adjustable character history.
  • A revised “ladder” system, offering more customization with character creation.
  • 12 new classes, including infiltrator, medic, and sniper.
  • 26 archetypes.

  • New treasure tables, including loot & shoot rules.
  • Six location maps with action scenes to include in any adventure.
  • A spacecraft combat system.
  • A customizable sci-fi dungeon map system with 30 different rooms.
  • Two new adventures—the cyberpunk/superhero Necropolis and the space horror Threshold
The file size listed to the right is not the size of the PDF. When you purchase this product, you'll receive the PDF in standard and low-ink variations as well as hundreds of MB of maps.

Designer Note: This 2nd Edition of Ultramodern5 includes revised rules from the original and adds races, one new ladder, two new classes, many more weapons and armors, revised vehicles, new monsters, and an entirely new set of rules for spellcasting (techno-magic) and mecha construction. Additionally, the two original adventures (Invasion Proxy and Biohazard) have been replaced with two new adventures, Necropolis and Threshold. The original maps have returned along with a brand new set of sci-fi themed dungeon tiles. The page count includes these maps—the content of the game puts the page count at just under 400 pages. The purchase also includes a zipped file of all the maps in high resolution.

Insert any rules from Ultramodern5 into any existing game of any genre, including fantasy!

Hey Chris, I love the book you provided. Just some clarification. Does Magus class get assets equal to their vigor plus the class bonus every level? Or do they only get 1 asset every level?
Customer avatar
Chris D February 24, 2021 4:43 pm UTC
It's +1 bonus to your asset, so Asset + vigor modifier.

Thank you for clarifying that its every level. Its an amazing magic system that lends very well to story telling.

Are there any custom resources in roll20 for UM5? The character sheet or module on Roll20 would come in handy, as it skews slightly from a traditional 5e.

Roll20 is extremely difficult to reach regarding adapting to UM6 but we are in Fantasy Grounds and D20 Pro. And new custom sheets are coming soon.

Question about Converging Fire

Is the +1 to attack rolls just to hit or is it to damage as well?

Attack rolls only

Hi all,

What do people recommend as other sci-fi/cyberpunk/futurist 5e resource books? I currently own and backed Redux and use it in a homebrew setting. I want to make sure I am aware of all the resources in this genre that are available. I was suggested GeneFunk as a tool to build-out the biochemical side of the world. One big area of the world I feel is lacking is NPC hackers taking part in encounters. The world is filled with technology and I'm curious to make it relevant and not just scene dressing. I have home-brewed a few hacker NPCs but don't see any examples in books yet. Any books you can recommend or examples you have made and used are greatly appreciated. Even if it's within the genre but not about hacking, I would still be interested.

Well, we have published three setting books using UM5 as a framework. The first predates UM5 and is a sci-fi/fantasy called Amethyst. If you are looking for cybernetics, we have NeuroSpasta, and if you want superheroes, we have Apex. We also got three more settings being published under a single label called Affinity due to hit Kickstarter in a couple months.

Thank you for the recommendations. I just purchased a hardcover and PDF of NeuroSpasta. It has a lot of what I am looking for. Going to look in the Amethyst after. Super excited for Affinity. Been following it since Redux.

Hello all,

I'm wondering if anyone might offer some advice on a rule here. For the Sniper's Magic Bullet class feature there is some debate in my group (who just started playing) on how this actually works. In fairness all of us in the group can see how the text can be read in different ways, so would like some clarity.
Text text in question is below for reference.

Does the skill cost 1 point for the first use, and then if the target is killed the player spends an additional 1 point and can attack a different target, and may repeat up to 3 times for a total of 3 additional targets each at 1 point for a total of 3 points, or does each use cost one addition point MORE than the prior use, meaning first attack is 1 point, second attack is 2 point, third is 3 (so that 3 attacks would be 1 pt + 2 pts + 3 pts for a total of 6 points.

Would anyone on this thread be able to provide some clarity on this as we would like to play as close as possible to the rules as written...See more

The ability always costs 1. You can use it up to three times in one turn. However, you spend the point when you drop a target, not before. Meaning you kill the target, spend 1 point to use magic bullet. Then, if you kill the second creature, spend 1 point to do so again, up to three times.

A fellow DM told me this book has better rules for firearms then the ones I was currently using for my setting, when he showed it to me, I noticed that it said the custom ultramodern classes and the firearms were intertwined in terms of damage output and skills. Does this mean the system would get a bit muddled and firearms wouldn't progress as well if I opt to use the firearms rules but not the custom classes or archetypes?
Customer avatar
Chris D January 09, 2021 6:16 pm UTC
The upscaling of damage output is defined by the classes rather than weapons. This was established in core 5E rules, and we continued that trend with UM5. It would be like a wizard wielding a greatsword. As I don't know the situation with your classes, I can't really comment on how it would work in your game, but that was the design intent. Firearms do the same damage as medieval weapons, and gain increased effectiveness by the class using them, just like Fantasy D&D.

A friend just showed me this book and it looks phenominal. I admit one small thing puts me off, and that's the saving throw for some classes. It's not a hard rule, but strength, intelligence, and charisma saving throws are considered weak because they don't show up that often, while the other three are considered strong due to how often they show up. Some class have two strong saves or two weak saves. Did you take this soft rule into account when designer and if so what is your thought process behind it?

Thony D December 14, 2020 3:37 pm UTC
Ah, and one other thing; there's no such thing as a 'free action' in 5e, so the term being used here is confusing and I'm not sure what it means here.
Customer avatar
Chris D December 14, 2020 10:23 pm UTC
A long time ago, we realized that using the term "free action" solved a lot of problems over saying "this takes no action" or "you can do this free on your turn". We started using the term "free action", and no one objected to it in three years.
Also, the decision for saving throws was purely meant for thematic sense as we explained in UM5 that classes are not balanced combat-wise.

As much as I love the idea, the printer book I got from the kickstarter is not to my liking and not very friendly to those who are vision impaired.

The dark font on dark, colored background is not very legible.

I see that there is a low ink version PDF that fixes this, but it doesnt fix the already printed book.
I could print out the book from PDF, the costs for printing it in COLOR would be astronomical.

Not to mention, the author will NOT be converting this to Savage Worlds like some of his other products...

This problem alone makes the book unusable to me.
Customer avatar
Michael D December 13, 2020 1:46 am UTC
So... you have an issue with the printer they used for the Kickstarter, NOT the DrivethruRPG version, and are also somehow bothered that a product that is explicitly derived from the 5e SRD isn't going to be converted to Savage Worlds, another thing totally not relevant to this product, and decided to give it a 2 star review?

I dont really care what you think of my review of the game itself.
I am not going to change my opinion just because you dislike it.

incidentaly, I have also purchased the DTRPG version as well and my opinion still stands.

My friends and I are loving UM5 and one wants to be a Dark user. Is there a version of the character sheet that has vigor stats on it? places to mark things like vigor score and proficiency in (induce or detection)? If not then could you recommend how you keep track of these things when you play as that character type?

just bought and browsed the pdf, its very neat but i have some questions

costs for weapons out of the PHB? maybe i missed it but i cant find any single side note or suggestions for cost passed whats discussed in the sliding scale of Tech Level. i could have easily missed it though.

browsing guns semi-auto rifle seems awfully good. costs 300 and does 1d10 damage compared to say a gauss repeater which does 1d8 but costs a whopping 28,000! huge jump for what seems a side grade for advanced weaponry. sure gauss has more range and ammo capacity plus the scaling magnetic tricks. so having not played yet i could easily be over estimating, but it seems most players will just gravitate to the semi-auto as is regardless of tech level. especially since a lost or destroyed Semi-auto means negligible losses.

also while browsing guns pistols seems very low damage wise. its odd that few do as much damage as a PHB Hand Crossbows 1d6 and most do a single 1d4. doing a western style...See more

Chris D December 06, 2020 7:17 pm UTC
Firstly, magnetic gains the AP property at 6th, which is huge. Second, the gauss repeater is a machine gun with auto rules. These are very different weapons that work differently based on how a character is employing them.
Also, damage output is in balance with the mechanics of the game, not a real-world comparison. We discovered that comparing damage values brings up very humorous counter-arguments, like a longbow doing the same damage as a battleaxe.

Is the quality for POD here equal to retail? I've purchased some awful POD where the ink is smudgey and uneven. To be honest thats why I prefer to go retail when I can, as it tends to have higher overall quality. But since not all the expansions like NeuroPasta & Apex are retail it seems somewhat easier to just potentially grab them together in print eventually.

I would say it is equal. We selected premium color, so it's more expensive but it looks awesome.

Just ordered my hard copy book the other day with PDFs and have been enjoying the digital materials so far! Just got into the DARK magic rules that optionally use the new attribute "Vigor". I'm cool with that, but was wondering where you would recommend putting it on the official UM5Redux character sheet? I didn't see a spot. Any plans to make an official "Dark magic-based practitioner" Char Sheet with font reduced so Vigor can get squeezed in under Cha on the left? Of course we could just write it in somewhere or make our own PDF. But I'm lazy and like it to look pretty/official, lol. Consider this my vote for such a char sheet update/option! Thanks

So my question is "So is the PDF consistently being updated with the erratas? For the propose of a new gm who wants the latest system rule, but doesn't want sift thought a bunch of extra updates. But like a software update it is a digital version. It should almost take nothing to do it but a little time. As a potential customer I know it take a little bit of extra effort to copy and paste in the correct places, but your customer will love you for it. I also know for the ones that have a Physical copy they could still download a new digi-copy and have an up to-date version on tab. Thank you for your time I look forward to hearing back from you.
Customer avatar
Chris D November 06, 2020 5:51 pm UTC
It takes more time than you think and creates an issue for those that have already purchased the print edition. We were updating the PDF with updates for a while, but when we reached print, further updates would be found in the errata. Thank you for your support.

On page 105, under the Grandmaster's Drunken Boxing Martial Art Discipline, it states that "You do not inflict double dice damage when scoring a critical hit; instead, you gain one additional unarmed melee attacks as part of the same action (max two attacks gained this way per turn)."

However, the final benefit of Drunken Boxing reads "After you select this discipline a third time, you gain three additional unarmed attacks with a critical hit instead of two."

So my question is, if you picked Drunken Boxing, how many extra attacks would you get with a crit if you had not picked the Discipline a third time? One or two?

With all of the talk down below about Amazon, are we still going to be able to purchase a physical copy from DTRPG? I mean, Amazon = Billion dollar company. DTRPG = Friends.

Oh Yes. Once I get the proof, I'll reactivate the POD. The POD has thicker paper but is way more expensive. The retail edition has the satin bookmark and is available with an alternate cover.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
