Create a pure science fiction setting or insert any combination of rules into your own fantasy world.

The only limit is your imagination.

FILES
The file size listed to the right is not the size of the PDF. When you purchase this product, you'll receive the PDF in standard and low-ink variations as well as hundreds of MB of maps.

Designer Note: This 2nd Edition of Ultramodern5 includes revised rules from the original and adds races, one new ladder, two new classes, many more weapons and armors, revised vehicles, new monsters, and an entirely new set of rules for spellcasting (techno-magic) and mecha construction. Additionally, the two original adventures (Invasion Proxy and Biohazard) have been replaced with two new adventures, Necropolis and Threshold. The original maps have returned along with a brand new set of sci-fi themed dungeon tiles. The page count includes these maps—the content of the game puts the page count at just under 400 pages. The purchase also includes a zipped file of all the maps in high resolution.

ALL RULES ARE FULLY COMPATIBLE WITH BASE 5TH EDITION

Insert any rules from Ultramodern5 into any existing game of any genre, including fantasy!

Heya, is there any discount available for the PDF after buying the hardcover? I messed up and bought just the hardcover not noticing the PDF was $20 on its own but only $2 with the hardcover. I don’t want to cancel my order just to place another one with the PDF as well, but I want to look at the pretty new pages so badly.

If you purchased REDUX before the launch of the POD option, we did send out a coupon, but you had to have your email set to receive messages from DTRPG. If you still want the coupon, email or FB me a copy of your invoice. (diasexmachine at gmail dot com)

Is there a discount for people who purchased the original edition?

At this point, there are no plans as it would be unfair to our Kickstarter backers and the hundred of people that already purchased the new edition.

I have the original hardcover Ultramodern5, but have yet to start a campaign with it. Are it and the newest iteration so different that I should wait and get REDUX, or are they similar enough that I should just get the PDF?

I wouldn't say they are so much different as REDUX just has more stuff. Different adventures, a new class, all-new monsters, magic, mecha, and races.

Hi, I bought the pdf 3 days ago on Tues 16th. Would I be eligible for a discount on the print version? There's nothing coupon like in my inbox or spam folder.

The coupon was sent out on June 18th, so yes, you would have gotten the coupon. Check your spam folder. If not, you might have set your account to not receive emails (about 10% of purchasers have it turned off, so they wouldn't receive the coupon). You can email me your invoice at DiasExMachina at gmail.com and I'll manually send you a coupon.

Long range distances for both the compound longbow and carbon crossbow (p. 134) are wrong. Thrown weapons have 3x normal range, projectile weapons have 4x normal range. If the short range is 200 feet for each, long range should be 800 feet, not 600. And a good archer these days would laugh at a 600-foot shot.

Love the book, question:
What are the prerequisites for multiclassing into the new classes, and what proficiencies do you gain when multiclassing into them? Should I rule "no prerequisites" and "pick one proficiency" or do you have something in particular in mind? Sorry if this has been asked elsewhere, and if there is a forum or discord you prefer receiving comments, let us know. (Edit, found discord link in your website, will join shortly).

PUBLISHER
We listed no prerequisites for selecting additional classes. As for proficiencies, we'll probably include an update in more detail in the future, but for proficiencies, I would carry over any tool/weapon/armor proficiencies and only one skill from the newly acquired class, which basically follows the same pattern from the PHB.

I love this book and the work put into it, can't wait to drag my players into this.
One question though, the table on page 134 does not list the reload quality for either the Boom Gauntlet or the Rocket Hammer, despite the descriptions of both items (page 134 & 135 respectively) mentioning how cell charges augment their use. Is this an error or did I miss something elsewhere in the book?

You're not going crazy. Those are missing. We'll add it into the June update.

A few questions about the magic section:

1) If you're not using the Vigor stat, how should you determine spellcasting traits (vessel, VR, Asset, River, the Commune/Detection/Induce skills, etc.)?

2) What kind of damage does using Vigor (Induce) inflict on the caster?

3) The table for the magus (p. 211) lists Endowment as the benefit granted at level 2, but the description of Endowment says you get it at levels 1, 6, 10, 14, and 20. Should you get it at level 2, or not?

1) It depends entirely on the GM prerogative of the setting. I would suggest using Wisdom, but it could be Int or even Str.
2) Psychic technically, but it cannot be resisted.
3) Yes, you should get it at 2nd level

Another suggestion regarding magic: you might want to set asset to a minimum of 1 per level, or else someone with 8-11 in Vigor wouldn't get any spells until well after the start of the game.

For example, take an occultist magus that starts with 8 Vigor (let's call him Neville). Neville learns a single spell at level 1, courtesy of the Mystic Arts class feature, but can't even cast it. Why? Because you have to pay 2 asset to open up the appropriate Mystic Path before you can cast any spells from it. In essence, Neville gains 1 asset due to being a level 1 magus, but he then loses that 1 point of asset due to his innate ineptitude for all things magical (+1 class feature, -1 Vigor mod). He keeps struggling to get it right, going through an agonizingly long, slow, tedious process of leveling up as a magician who can't even cast a single spell. He learns a second free spell at level 5, but still can't get that one to work any more than he could the first spell he learned, back during his freshman year...See more

Got a POD proof last week, but there was a graphical issue with the cover. We ordered a second last week. That being said, I promised my KS backers that I would not activate the POD until the printed books are being shipped. I am waiting on proofs from them as well, so there should be an update in the next week.

I have been running RPGs for well over 20 years, tried dozens of systems, and this Dark magic system may be one of my favorite systems ever. To take another system and seamlessly add Skills, Feats, a Ladder, a Class, and Gear? Absolutely brilliant and I hope everyone who worked on it should be proud.

Now, onto the tough question though: is there plans to support Dark with new feats, paths, and gears in future books? I'm sure I could do some of my own conversions as I see the underpinnings of what you've done for spells but let's just say I trust you guys to do an excellent job so I'd rather go with official rules.

We'd love to expand on that, but we got three setting books for Affinity coming out this year and then another Amethyst book.

You've created a strong enough core that I think I can manage but again, applause for such a brilliant and compelling system.

I am familiar with Amethyst and Neurospasta but what is Affinity? I looked on your publisher page and couldn't find anything. Perhaps I'm just daft?
Customer avatar
Chris D April 19, 2020 7:10 am UTC
PUBLISHER
Affinity is three settings with similar ideas and themes but completely different settings. They are supposed to "rhyme" and offer unique rules in each book. Book 1: Paradise is finished and awaiting art; Book 2: Conestoga is half way through the writing phase. There there is Torus, which should be finished this summer. I hope to get all books out around the same time for $9.99 each.

And thanks for the positive comments--I appreciate them. Pass the word; post a review. Thanks again!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
