FILES
The file size listed to the right is not the size of the PDF. When you purchase this product, you'll receive the PDF in standard and low-ink variations as well as hundreds of MB of maps.

Designer Note: This 2nd Edition of Ultramodern5 includes revised rules from the original and adds races, one new ladder, two new classes, many more weapons and armors, revised vehicles, new monsters, and an entirely new set of rules for spellcasting (techno-magic) and mecha construction. Additionally, the two original adventures (Invasion Proxy and Biohazard) have been replaced with two new adventures, Necropolis and Threshold. The original maps have returned along with a brand new set of sci-fi themed dungeon tiles. The page count includes these maps—the content of the game puts the page count at just under 400 pages. The purchase also includes a zipped file of all the maps in high resolution.

ALL RULES ARE FULLY COMPATIBLE WITH BASE 5TH EDITION

Insert any rules from Ultramodern5 into any existing game of any genre, including fantasy!

I have been looking very hard for a great sci-fi system that is both realistic and keeps rules simple and down to earth for easy learning. Of all my options, this is the system I chose, I love it, but I have one major gripe. The space ships. There is no real formula on how to make your own, at all. It doesn't say which sizes get what rooms, the standard crew per ship size, nothing. All you get is the premade ships for a basis, which are great, except not all sizes are well represented, making it hard to even do it that way.
I love the system, but I am looking for a system for space adventures and a ship is a very important part of that
Also, you have mecha sheets, but no ship sheets. And the rules are not setup to be able to make your own.

Thanks for the comments. I have two responses:
Firstly, I added in new mecha and player sheets with the last update. Check your downloads for them. They are not in the PDF for UM5. They are a separate files included in your download.
And unfortunately, I admit not adding in a spaceship construction system but in a pinch, the mecha construction system can be used to make spaceships.
I hope this helps.

I know about the sheets for characters and mecha and I appreciate them, I was just saying I didn't see one for spaceships. And I love your system for everything but ships. I will just steal the spaceship system from the Fifth Age system and use your system for everything else. Thank you for being so quick to answering my questions!

The content of the Book Itself is awesome but when my copy arrived the cover fell off. Maybe you lot could look into doing a better job with the glue? $62 bucks for a book. BTW I am not sending it back I did some repairs myself & I don't have time to go threw the whole refund mishigoss.

Anyway apart from that bit as I said the content of the book is awesome which is why I am in a forgiving mood. It contains literally everything you need to make up any genre of Scifi from Hard to Scifi Fantasy and or modern settings. The art is top notice. The drawings and colors really pop (except on the table of contents page. The blue back round set againt the black text doesn't work. Pastels would have been better). I would give it three and a half stars. Four if I leave out the glue problem.

Cheers.

PS would like to see a Threshold Sourcebook in the future.

Firstly, I would recommend, if not implore you, to reach out to DriveThruRPG customer support. Remember, this is a Print-On-Demand service, which means outside of us setting the book to “premium color”, we have no control over quality. Artwork, grammar, layout, that’s us, but print production is entirely the responsibility of DriveThruRPG and their print company. I absolutely do not want you to suffer a damaged book, and they should supply you with a replacement. If not, then I will.

I am overjoyed that you like the book, but I would hate to take a hit on my reputation for an issue falling under someone else’s responsibility.

Also, if you want to see rules that would accent Threshold nicely, check out my Affinity 5E RPG trilogy on Kickstarter now, specifically Conestoga, which has a bunch of rules inspired by Dead Space, which should work perfectly.

Thanks for the kind words.
Chris.

I have the original UM5, picked it up at retail.
Is there anyplace I can find a breakdown of what was changed/updated/added? (not necessarily the rules around it, just like "added xxx race" "changed xxx rule" kinda thing)

I'll try my best to go over changes as there were a bunch:
All the current rules had the errata incorporated into the game.
The "Terminals" setting was added to the intro.
Nine races
One new ladder (performer)
One new class (civilian)
At least 1 new archetype
About a dozen more weapons
Cybernetics
A 25 page mecha construction system
A 35 page tech-based spellcasting system
Around 40 new monsters.
Ultramax rules
New loot tables
Two new adventures replacing the two found in the original Ultramodern5.
Oh, and the whole thing is in color now.
Hope that helps!

Hi! I love this book, have read through it many times, used the Gunslinger and Gundancer combo many times and it's been amazing! However, I'm starting to branch out a bit, and I need some clarification. The wording's clear over all, but I tend to overthink some things and get mixed up, especially with new combos.

1. With the Heavy's Attack of Necessity and Rapid Fire talents, do I use the single shot or auto fire damage and ammo consumption?

2. If I go into the Man-At-Arms subclass and make the rifle with the autofire the chosen weapon, do I add the +1 to the saving throws of the talents and/or the burst fire, or just the native single and autofire?
Customer avatar
Chris D March 28, 2021 5:44 pm UTC
PUBLISHER
1. Generally, when an ability states an auto or auto-heavy weapon is required, you use the auto damage and ammo consumption. This is certainly the case with both Attack of Necessity and Rapid Fire class abilities.
2. Good question on this, technically, it's only for traditional single shot attacks, but I can see it increasing Dex saving throw DCs as well.

File size of the fullcolor pdf is 250mb which means basically that there is room for improvement on the build of the file, I have other full color products filled with beautiful full color artwork that fit under 60mb like for example Exalted 3rd ed which is 650 pages and just a tad over 50mb.

So if you could look into that perhaps to make the file less heavy on the readers and downloading?

As another example of how much the file can be optimized I had one 250 page rpg that in it’s beta face was 115mb but it’s final pdf with all the same art and page backgrounds is only meager 7,6mb file.

We have had professionals and numerous fans attempt to figure out what the issue, and the most they can shave off is a few MB. It's been a conundrum since publication and it appears the only way to address the issue is to build the entire document from the ground up...it's something we have been considering but it is a daunting process. Thank you for you input.

Sorry to hear that, though you should be rather pleased if the file size is your biggest problem. That is to say the content itself is of excellent quality, though I personally have never cared for the level adjustment mechanic but it is easy to ignore and does not tale anything away from the quality of the product.

Good work overall :)

Yeah, I only opted to use that only when absolutely necessary, like with mecha, where it appeared the only way to balance the power of the mecha to the skill of its pilot. Thanks for the comments.

Such a book would be a follow-up to Ultramodern5. Affinity (assuming that's the project you speak of) takes UM5 and builds on it with new ideas. Dark magic is one type of system, Affinity offers two more. The modular weapon construction system is another beefy addition, as is the steampunk weapon and inscription system. Affinity presents more thematically bound ideas rather than UM5's generic approach to rules. In UM5, I built the mechanics without thinking of a setting while in Affinity, the setting was foremost on my mind. Thankfully, the mechanics were written in such a way that they can easily be removed for someone's own setting.

Level adjustment is a classic mechanic from D&D that is virtually unseen in 5E: Here is the quote from the D&D Wiki:

Certain powerful races start with a racial trait known as level adjustment. Simply put, this is the number of levels you are behind a normal character with the same amount of experience.
For example, a human fighter who gains 3,000 XP reaches third level, becoming a third level fighter. However, a tiefling fighter, who has a level adjustment of +1, only reaches second level at 3,000 XP, becoming a second level fighter.
Assuming the human and his tiefling party member always receive the same amount of XP, they will always level up at the same time, but the tiefling will always be one fighter level behind the human.
In effect, the character starts with one or more blank levels, which give absolutely no abilities (no hit dice, hit points, spells per day, skill points, base attack bonus, etc), except to increase his effective character level for the purposes of...See more

Hi all,

What do people recommend as other sci-fi/cyberpunk/futurist 5e resource books? I currently own and backed Redux and use it in a homebrew setting. I want to make sure I am aware of all the resources in this genre that are available. I was suggested GeneFunk as a tool to build-out the biochemical side of the world. One big area of the world I feel is lacking is NPC hackers taking part in encounters. The world is filled with technology and I'm curious to make it relevant and not just scene dressing. I have home-brewed a few hacker NPCs but don't see any examples in books yet. Any books you can recommend or examples you have made and used are greatly appreciated. Even if it's within the genre but not about hacking, I would still be interested.

Well, we have published three setting books using UM5 as a framework. The first predates UM5 and is a sci-fi/fantasy called Amethyst. If you are looking for cybernetics, we have NeuroSpasta, and if you want superheroes, we have Apex. We also got three more settings being published under a single label called Affinity due to hit Kickstarter in a couple months.

Hello all,

I'm wondering if anyone might offer some advice on a rule here. For the Sniper's Magic Bullet class feature there is some debate in my group (who just started playing) on how this actually works. In fairness all of us in the group can see how the text can be read in different ways, so would like some clarity.
Text text in question is below for reference.

Does the skill cost 1 point for the first use, and then if the target is killed the player spends an additional 1 point and can attack a different target, and may repeat up to 3 times for a total of 3 additional targets each at 1 point for a total of 3 points, or does each use cost one addition point MORE than the prior use, meaning first attack is 1 point, second attack is 2 point, third is 3 (so that 3 attacks would be 1 pt + 2 pts + 3 pts for a total of 6 points.

Would anyone on this thread be able to provide some clarity on this as we would like to play as close as possible to the rules as written...See more

The ability always costs 1. You can use it up to three times in one turn. However, you spend the point when you drop a target, not before. Meaning you kill the target, spend 1 point to use magic bullet. Then, if you kill the second creature, spend 1 point to do so again, up to three times.

A fellow DM told me this book has better rules for firearms then the ones I was currently using for my setting, when he showed it to me, I noticed that it said the custom ultramodern classes and the firearms were intertwined in terms of damage output and skills. Does this mean the system would get a bit muddled and firearms wouldn't progress as well if I opt to use the firearms rules but not the custom classes or archetypes?
Customer avatar
Chris D January 09, 2021 6:16 pm UTC
PUBLISHER
The upscaling of damage output is defined by the classes rather than weapons. This was established in core 5E rules, and we continued that trend with UM5. It would be like a wizard wielding a greatsword. As I don't know the situation with your classes, I can't really comment on how it would work in your game, but that was the design intent. Firearms do the same damage as medieval weapons, and gain increased effectiveness by the class using them, just like Fantasy D&D.
Customer avatar
Thony D December 14, 2020 12:25 pm UTC
A friend just showed me this book and it looks phenominal. I admit one small thing puts me off, and that's the saving throw for some classes. It's not a hard rule, but strength, intelligence, and charisma saving throws are considered weak because they don't show up that often, while the other three are considered strong due to how often they show up. Some class have two strong saves or two weak saves. Did you take this soft rule into account when designer and if so what is your thought process behind it?
Customer avatar
Thony D December 14, 2020 3:37 pm UTC
Ah, and one other thing; there's no such thing as a 'free action' in 5e, so the term being used here is confusing and I'm not sure what it means here.
Customer avatar
Chris D December 14, 2020 10:23 pm UTC
PUBLISHER
A long time ago, we realized that using the term "free action" solved a lot of problems over saying "this takes no action" or "you can do this free on your turn". We started using the term "free action", and no one objected to it in three years.
Also, the decision for saving throws was purely meant for thematic sense as we explained in UM5 that classes are not balanced combat-wise.

As much as I love the idea, the printer book I got from the kickstarter is not to my liking and not very friendly to those who are vision impaired.

The dark font on dark, colored background is not very legible.

I see that there is a low ink version PDF that fixes this, but it doesnt fix the already printed book.
I could print out the book from PDF, the costs for printing it in COLOR would be astronomical.

Not to mention, the author will NOT be converting this to Savage Worlds like some of his other products...

This problem alone makes the book unusable to me.
Customer avatar
Michael D December 13, 2020 1:46 am UTC
So... you have an issue with the printer they used for the Kickstarter, NOT the DrivethruRPG version, and are also somehow bothered that a product that is explicitly derived from the 5e SRD isn't going to be converted to Savage Worlds, another thing totally not relevant to this product, and decided to give it a 2 star review?

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
