FILES
The file size listed to the right is not the size of the PDF. When you purchase this product, you'll receive the PDF in standard and low-ink variations as well as hundreds of MB of maps.

Designer Note: This 2nd Edition of Ultramodern5 includes revised rules from the original and adds races, one new ladder, two new classes, many more weapons and armors, revised vehicles, new monsters, and an entirely new set of rules for spellcasting (techno-magic) and mecha construction. Additionally, the two original adventures (Invasion Proxy and Biohazard) have been replaced with two new adventures, Necropolis and Threshold. The original maps have returned along with a brand new set of sci-fi themed dungeon tiles. The page count includes these maps—the content of the game puts the page count at just under 400 pages. The purchase also includes a zipped file of all the maps in high resolution.

ALL RULES ARE FULLY COMPATIBLE WITH BASE 5TH EDITION

Insert any rules from Ultramodern5 into any existing game of any genre, including fantasy!

The book looks great, haven't had a chance to play to use it yet, but looking forward to!
I have a couple of questions:
For the Tuner race, their Psykar feature mentions "the magi class" but I can't find a magi class, is it referring to the magus class?
In various Mech tables it uses "1/size" does this mean these features will be cheaper the larger the Mech is?
For Mech's Ranged Weapons does it assume you pick up a weapon and tinker with it to determine what kind of weapon you have, or does which modifier table you use determine what kind of weapon you have?

For the artillery talent: overwatch, on page 72 for the heavy class;
When you use a reaction to force an enemy that enters the area to make a Dex
Save or take weapon damage on a failed save..
Is it intended to specifically target a single creature that enters the overwatch area when you use a reaction, or potentially any & all enemies that enter the area?
Customer avatar

PUBLISHER
It can only affect the creature you select that enters the area. If a creature enters that area, you can use your reaction to have it make the save. As it is one creature, and you only have one reaction, you can only do this once outside of your turn.

Question: Why doesn't the Machine of War, Militarist and Selfless Protector Archetypes have Proficiencies? Was this intentional or an error? If it was an error, what are their proficiencies?
Customer avatar
Chris D June 13, 2022 5:45 am UTC
PUBLISHER
Sorry for the delay in answering: I was at a convention all weekend.
The reason why those archetypes lack proficiencies was that IMHO, their abilities don't mandate specific proficiencies. Machine of War is about teamwork. Militarist is about coordination. Selfless Protector is about protecting someone else.

Great work!
I was wondering about the Drunken Boxing Martial Art Discipline that's part of the Grandmaster Archetype.
It states that you get one additional attack instead of double dice damage when you crit, but later it states that if you pick the discipline three times your get three additional attacks instead of two.
Are you supposed to get one, or two extra attacks in the first instance. Thanks in advance!

It means each time you score a critical hit, no matter from what, you gain an additional attack. And as you are likely to have multiple attacks, you'd have many opportunities to gain these attacks. However, during your turn, you can only gain +2 additional attacks via that ability. If you select that discipline a third time, that increases to +3 attacks. At 20th level, you'd have 4 attacks, but early on, if you use the Circular Attack finishing move, you could potentially have numerous opportunities to stack these effects.

Do I need to have basic E5 or this can be used as corebook?
Customer avatar
Chris D May 03, 2022 3:41 pm UTC

You do require the core 5E books (PHB, DMG, MM). At the very least the PHB. That being said, if you have access to the SRD or already know how to play the game, we include everything else you need.

Really, just the rules. Experience tables. How combat works, most of which you can honestly find online for free. If you are running a game entirely in a non-fantasy setting, we supply the equipment, classes, monsters, maps, etc. We say you need the core books for UM5, but that's really the political answer, as you really only need the basics from the PHB and that's about it.

So i have two questions.
One. On power arms it says that the damage goes 1>1d4>1d6>1d8>1d10>1d12>2d6>2d8>2d10. But then only says that doing both arms makes damage go up by 2. Well how do you go further then 1d10? I figured to get 1d10 you needed to get an extra set of arms. But can you only have one extra set of arms or can you get multiple?
Two. Altered Mutations said a +1 level adjustment can get you 2 more mutations. What's a +1 level adjustment? I've never heard of this.
Customer avatar
Chris D April 19, 2022 7:08 am UTC
PUBLISHER
Do you mean the Power Hooks on Page 135? Firstly, getting two power hooks does not increase your unarmed damage by two; it's still only one. Second, it boosts unarmed damage, whatever that may be. The monk starts level 1 at 1d4, and by 17th level, has increased to 1d10. If that monk had power hooks, their damage would be 1d12 at 17th level, and so on. The martial artist in Ultramodern5 also boasts a similar ability. In conclusion, the number of arms does not affect this damage, only your base unarmed damage.

A level adjustment is a seldom-employed but still common D&D staple where your effective level when balancing with other characters and when creating combat encounters is increased.

If you use a Revolver, can you switch Traditional Ammo damage types from the 1d4?
Customer avatar
Chris D November 12, 2021 6:03 am UTC
PUBLISHER
Well, none of the alternate ammunition types allows you to alter the damage of a firearm, though some class abilities will. Realistically, there should be, but it mucked with game balance and characters would always purchase higher damage bullets.

So, I really want to love this product. I just... Can't. For how dense it is, the formatting is atrocious. It's super easy to not notice where one heading ends and the next begins, because the headings and subheadings use the same font, color, and point as the subheadings, with the only difference being an underline for headings that's absent in subheadings. This would be less of an issue if all headings fit exactly into a set number of pages, but they don't. A new heading often starts in the middle of a whole slew of subheadings on a given page, making skimming a huge chore. It's even worse that there are no footer notes on the pages to indicate what chapter or heading is on that page. Instead the reader is forced to use context clues, remember the page numbers, or worse yet, resort to the table of contents every time they need to locate a section. My biggest formatting gripe, though, comes in what I'm pretty sure was Chapter 5, in the form of placement of the attribute tables for each class. There's no. Consistency....See more

Follow up question, are there any addition supplements or perhaps a "monster manual" for this product? I was looking at the creatures found within and found them lacking. Mostly human and robots. Was hoping for more weird creatures and aliens.

I'd love to develop a monster manual in the future centered around aliens and sci-fi creatures. However, UM5-REDUX book offers the skin, xenobites, and the evolution, which are notable inhuman. Neurospasta features more robots, and there a lot more monsters in Affinity, our next release.

Now compairedable is Ultramodern 5 to D20 Modern? I loved that setting, however it did need some tweekinging to balance things out once you've reached mid levels. I am considering just going back to d20 Modern and running with it. . But this caught my eye. Is it comparable? Does it have psionics like abilities? Solid collection of weapons, armor and items from the modern age?
Customer avatar
Chris D September 07, 2021 2:50 am UTC
PUBLISHER
There is considerable content. It took a lot of inspiration from d20 modern but only used it as a launching point. There is a large variety of weapons with a bunch of races as well. We don't have psionics by name but we did include a new magic system. Affinity, our next series, includes three new magic systems, one of which is heavily inspired by psionics. If you check the contents in the preview file, you can see how large those chapters are.

hey, so I have some new questions, I am sorry if it's to long, if you can't answer all of the questions please answer the second and third questions only, becuase they are the main problems I found that I can't fix with simple homebrew
1. many abilities give you bonuses on using hit dice at the end of a long rest, but in 5e there is no reason to ever use hit dice at the end of a long rest as you are fully healed already.
2. how do you culculate creation points cost on upgrading mechs? because it lists the time and creation points cost but it never lists any price on upgrading or overall changing your mech
3. the root spell touch of life can heal your allies for 3 vessel points, however, you can charge you vessel each turn and heal yourself and your entire group for free with this ability which can be obtained in level 1.
4. in the sensors upgrade in the mech section the motion tracker has no description.
5. the holographics external manifistation in the mech section has no price....See more

Hey, I recently bought this book and it's great, I've been searching for a modern book for a while, and this one really scratched that itch! However, I have some questions that I couldn't find answers for in the book.
1. Alot of items talk about energy cells charges, but how many charges does each cell have exactly?
2. Some weapons have two different damage tables, one in their description and one in the weapon table, which one is the right one?
3. Nitroglycerin has a description in the demolitions chapter, but it is not on the demolitions table.
4. I want to make a scps style adventure, where the adventure takes place in the modern world, but anomalous (magic) items can be acquired, would you suggest adding ladders to that game?

1) They are listed with the items. So with weapons, you'll find them with the weapon entry. IF it's an item and does not list a charge limit in either the table OR the description, it is effectively unlimited.
2) Example?
3) Odd. It's the same as ANFO
4) Yes.

another thing I didn't understand is mecha economy. let's say I want to upgrade/change something in my mech, how much do I have to pay for it? or if I want to level up my mech? those things are priced in creation points, but not in actual money, and from what I read the only corrolation between dollars and creation points is the amount the amount a mech costs for each level and the amount of creation points for each level.
Customer avatar
Chris D August 19, 2021 8:37 pm UTC
PUBLISHER
I'll add these in the next errata. Thanks.
For the brass knuckles, it's +2.
As a default, if a battery doesn't list a capacity, it never drains unless disrupted or the GM determines it has been exhausted. In situations where something uses a charge and the capacity is not indicated, assume 20.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
