Rite of the Hero

An Introductory Fantasy Adventure
Intended for 4 to 6 player characters of levels 1 to 2

The Temple of the Blade has stood for time immemorial.
No one knows who built it, when, or why it was constructed.
What they do know is this: folks who enter die or come out heroes.
Will you test your mettle in the Rite of the Hero, adventurer?

Greetings adventurers and Game Masters!

I am very excited to announce a new produce line: the SG-Series! This is a set of generic, system neutral adventures designed to be fully compatible with both OSRIC (and OSR rules) and the Fifth Edition (5E) of the world's most popular role-playing game.

My very first release of the SG-Series is the adventure RITE OF THE HERO; an introductory level one-shot fantasy adventure intended for 4 to 6 new adventurers of levels 1 to 2.

SYNOPSIS: In this adventure your players will be engaging in an age-old rite of passage, for it is the custom in their region that all those who wish to take up the mantle of adventurer must first submit to the “Rite of the Hero”. Many initiates quit before entering the temple; others fail in the stygian depths, spilling their life’s blood; but those brave, lucky few who survive earn the right to call themselves heroes!

The rite takes place in the labyrinthine catacombs below an ancient wonder of the world, the Temple of the Blade.  It is quite an impressive sight: a 40’ tall blade stands in the center of a large obsidian crater, the heat of the blade’s impact having transformed the sandy soil into this black, glossy rock. Four ancient stelae surround the blade, describing the rite in long lost ancient tongues. A single staircase on the south side of the crater leads to the hidden depths and unknown dangers that await below.

Are you players up to the challenge of completing the "Rite of the Hero"?

This book provides a complete one-shot adventure. While aiming to offer a non-rules specific module, we do strive to provide sufficient information to make the book useful to the majority of our readers. However, the GM will still need to refer to their gaming manuals of choice for complete monster statistics and and treasure descriptions.

PLUS you also get a free copy of my 2022 Starry Knight Press Catalog, which has information on all of my modules and supplements, as well as maps of the known portions of my campaign world of Terrans, and bonus content (new monsters and magic items for OSR/5E) from my published books!

I hope you and your players enjoy this adventure, and that you find it easy to play with your fantasy gaming system of choice! Thank you for your custom and for supporting Starry Knight Press!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
