I was very much looking forward to this and picked it up right away. Sadly, I was a tad disappointed. While overall it is Modiphius' usual excellent work, it is missing some key things that I assumed would be a given. Character Creation has the Dosi, Lurians, Wadi (really?), but not the Vorta or Jem'Hadar? No map of the Gamma Quadrant? Again, what we got was good but I guess I was hoping for things that just weren't in the minds of the designers.

Hello Adam,

I don't believe that you really need an empty map of the Gamma Quadrant, the designers should focus on more important aspects. Also, as far as dealing with missing character creation species, I think that it is important to note that we actually have the information we need for character creation for Jem'Hadar and Vorta, you can find relevant information for them in the core rulebook starting on page 329. I suggest using them to start out with, and then lifting talents and traits that you find also reflect the two.

Keep in mind that due to the genetically designed aspects of these two species, the life path creation of these characters would be essentially absent and irrelevant. So, their basic stat blocks are essentially what players should have to start with when starting to play these characters. This may have been better itterated in the actual book, but that is my interpretation of their absense.

Why no map of the Gamma Quadrant? Same Alpha Quadrant map but focusing on DS9/Dominion War??? I know that there are some maps both from STO and a Star Trek Stellar Cartography book that does gives some glimpses.

We chose to go with a map of the Dominion War over a map of the Gamma Quadrant mostly because there's not much canonical information about the GQ map-wise, and felt providing a largely empty map as endpapers would be less useful than a map of the war events. As you say, there are a couple maps out there for what is known of the GQ, but most of the quadrant is effectively open space ready for exploration and for players and gamemasters to detail to their purposes.

It would be nice if you threw together a Gamma Quadrant map on a pdf for download on your site.

That is a good point. We have the ability to make edits to star charts via photo editing software if we need to do so. No need to waste dev/design time and money to work on a mostly empty map that you know that players can get ahold of with a quick google search. I mean that in all honesty. I also believe that, in many ways, less is more.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
