Old School Renaissance Like A Fucking Boss

Update: Old School Renaissance Like A Fucking Boss will appear as an appendix in the print version of Cha'alt: Fuchsia Malaise (funding happening now via Kickstarter).

_____

I've been playing D&D since 1983.  Thirty-six years of experience gives me a pretty good idea of what is and what isn't old school.  After the old school renaissance emerged around 2009, I fell in love all over again, trying to recreate the play experiences I had growing up in the 80s.  With a guiding hand, I rediscovered old school gaming.  I've been playing and running games the OSR way ever since.  With Old School Renaissance Like A Fucking Boss, I've made it easy to follow in the footsteps of gaming veterans.

This is not new, and this does not go into extensive detail.  What this PDF does is ennumerate my personal rules for running old school RPGs, specifically D&D type fantasy.

Every day, more and more gamers are discovering the OSR, delving into what makes it old school and why it's so awesome.  Old School Renaissance Like A Fucking Boss delivers the quick and dirty goods so you can get playing.  Glance over this PDF just before your game, as a refresher, a reminder, a shot in the arm... innoculating you from regressive and degenerate modernity.

Enjoy,

Venger As'Nas Satanis

This is a good overview and starter for a lot of new players and GM's to the OSR Style of play.

You know what goes perfect with OSR? Eldritch, gonzo, science-fantasy, post-apocalyptic adventures. Hey, I'm Kickstarting that right now!

Please check it out and back: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/vengersatanis/saving-chaalt/

Rules to live by! I've been playing since D&D was first published in '74. Trust me, this is old school!

This is very practical advice for running a good OSR RPG campaign without being an uptight purist about it. I think it really strikes the right tone: a clear, common-sense list of usable ideas. It doesn't try to declare any manifestos or advance a theory or terminology. It doesn't outlast its welcome with a lot of fluff. It's not controversial or pretentious. And it's free. So, to recap: very good, to the point, and free.

So the OSR is for me a mixed bag. All too often it comes off as backwards looking navel gazing at best or full on holier than thou gate-keeping at worst. I'v been playing, running, and designing games for 35+ years. I like the forward momentum of rules systems and innovations that have come to the hobby. I have fond memories playing AD&D back in the 80s but not of the mechanics. So all too often, when a movement wants to hearken back to older styles of play, I am wary. It's my opinion that games have gotten better, not worse over time.

So with that preamble out of the way, I want to say that the advice given in this work is thoughtful and right on for nearly all of it. Some of the points are not ones I emphasize but I was pleasantly surprised with how often I was nodding along. If I have any criticism of this piece it is the venue the author has decided to use to disseminate it. This should be an article that can be referenced and linked to, something more easy to share than this document format,...See more

I admit to not being the best resource but I believe there are a number of online venues that take article submissions. As a web article, it could be more readily shared with a wider audience.

These are great guidelines for DMing in general, and for keeping your games flowing smoothly, the players engaged and having fun, and, if you livestream your games, keeping them intriguing and exciting for your listeners or viewers as well.

I will be adding a shortcut to this on my laptop and reading it as a reminder before each session.

DTRPG Won't let me "officially" rate or review this product, so I'll do so here:

***** (Five stars)

An excellent list of rules and suggestions that should be required reading for every GM, regardless of genre or game system. Dynamic, innovative, and to the point; like the way it suggests games should be run. The reader might recognize two of the graduates of this same school of thought: Gary Gygax (D&D) and Marc Miller (Traveller).

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
