#iHunt: The RPG

Be a hero. You pick the hours.

#iHunt is a story telling game about killing monsters in the gig economy. In it, you play millennials scraping by paycheck to paycheck to make ends meet. A gig app called #iHunt offers them more money than they've ever made to hit the streets and kill vampires, werewolves, demons, and anything else that goes bump in the night.

  • #iHunt uses a modified version of the Fate Core Rulebook. You do not need it to play.
  • It's a high-drama, story-heavy urban fantasy roleplaying game.
  • It takes a critical look at the gig economy with irreverent humor.
  • Make your own hunters and monsters using easy collaborative tools.
  • It uses one normal six-sided die, and four Fate Dice.
Zine Supplements: We're expanding on the world of #iHunt through a series of "zine supplements" or as we call them, "zupplements." We're releasing at least one of these short books per month. You can download them here:

About Pricing: Within the coming months, this book will exist in print-on-demand format. If you purchase a digital version, once the print version goes live I will give you a $25 off coupon code to help defray some of that cost. This book is priced as it is for a few big reasons. I'm a fan of transparency, so here are the big ones:

  • I need to be able to justify my time and work.
  • Independent RPGs are criminally underpriced, and the industry isn't going to change itself.
  • There are other games comparable by page count and price ratio. It's not my goal to undercut.
  • If you cannot afford to buy the game at full price, I am committed to giving away free or deeply reduced copies. Pricing my game as it is allows me to do so. So far, I've given away over 100 free or reduced copies.
  • I want to be able to participate in site-wide sales without reducing the price to a negligible amount.

This looks awesome, and I'll be buying it as soon as I am able. It speaks to me, at least from what I read in the preview, both me and my significant other. The way it speaks of poverty, and the lack of decent safety nets really strikes home with me right now. My SO and myself moved in with my mother to take care of her, as she's been diagnosed with cancer, COPD, emphysema, and a stress fracture that required immediate surgery. The cancer's been dealt with, but due to the rest she's going to need life-long care... unfortunately, we're now eight months in and still waiting for her disability as they haven't granted it to her yet. Many nights, we're hungry. Bills are piling up, credit debt is mounting. It's getting pretty bad, with no end in sight. I myself have meniere's disease disease, so I am not eligible to work, and my SO has multiple health problems as well... so the theme of hunting monsters to pay the bills is pretty fucking relevant right now. We're both hardcore tabletop players, usually just the two...See more

Read the preview, liked it enough to buy the game, and then read it cover to cover. I love it. It hits close to home in a wonderfully cathartic way, and I'm looking forward to trying it out. I did run into two minor issues though:

1. I might be missing something, but I don't quite get how the essence costs for magical gifts work. Rather than the always/success/failure essence costs of other gifts, all of the magical gifts list a number as their essence cost, and I don't see where that's explained. Is that meant to be a number of shifts down on the essence chart? Also, since Evileenas and other non-monster characters don't have essence features, does that mean they always activate magical gifts by taking stress or consequences?

2. The page references in chapter 15 are all >>PAGE XX placeholders.

1) Thank you. It IS supposed to be based on shifts on the essence chart. I'll clarify it in the next version of the PDF.

2) Yep. For some reason my Control + F didn't catch that. They'll be fixed in the errata pass.

Thank you SO MUCH.

I'm going to pick this up soon, and I hope it get's a traditional print from doing very well (better paper materials.)

But I need everything hardcopy so if it only gets print on demand then that's fine too.

Will this be available on Amazon or just POD?
Customer avatar
Olivia H January 20, 2020 5:27 am UTC
Almost certain it'll just be POD. If we perform extremely well in the next few months, I might be able to do a traditional print run. But the way things are going, I expect POD is probably the only viable option.

Will this be POD or regular print run?
Customer avatar
Olivia H January 08, 2020 6:10 am UTC
95% sure it'll be POD. If it continues to do very well for the next few months, I might be able to fund a traditional print run. But I don't want to get anyone's hopes up in that regard.

cool will it be 8.5 x 11 or 6x9
Customer avatar
Olivia H January 08, 2020 6:15 am UTC
8.5 x 11. Same format as the PDF. Although I will be adding some pages before the book goes to final print. I want to add some reference pages and charts and things.

I published on DTRPG once upon a time years ago and now forevermore I cannot leave official reviews. So here's my review: Five out of five stars. Maybe make it six.

1. In general, well-written. The rules were explained well, and this was my first real attempt at working my way through a Fate RPG. The atmosphere and style were on-point, and everything was super clear without me feeling like I was being talked down to. I can't say much here, other than good job!

2. Most contemporary/futuristic RPGs I've looked at the last couple decades fail to account for cell phones, much less smart phones. The authors include the information age in the structure of the game, in ways that are useful and smart.

3. I've been broke as, and housing insecure, and the authors' approach to this is nuanced, empathetic, and just the tiniest bit uncomfortable. Well done!

4. Cyberpunk2020 had these little sidebars on how to survive when someone's hunting you, like how to trap your home,...See more

I never heard of this game (or the series of books) until just a few days ago. I downloaded the sample. I loved it. I'm reading the first novel. I'm loving it.

What's truly great about it is that it's about a lot more than just killing monsters. I find it odd that some of the criticism about this game is that it's too 'political' is laughable. It's about a world a lot of people live in. The gig economy is dystopian, but it is the world we live in. And when you point that out, that is somehow political.

I've just downloaded the game and can't wait for it to be available in print.

Great storytelling and I'm looking forward to trying it out at the table.

Bought it. Amazing stuff. I have a lot more to say about the book and the discussion but thank you for making a game for those of us who don't feel like the system is for us. These are type of kids I work with and some of them will love it. But people shouldn't judge or assume, sorry if I caused anything, I didn't know people would be clutching their pearls. Thank you again for writing this. Great stuff.

People always clutch pearls. Like Bette Davis said, "If everyone likes you, you're not doing it right."

I'm glad it's resonating with people. Thank you so much for your comment! I hope you get the chance to enjoy it.

Hello Olivia, I've been watching this book for a few days now. While I'm not going to rant like a few individuals here, I'd like to say this. I'm not the target audience, some of the stuff I read on the preview sounds like a small push to get politics involved. I don't think real world political views are a good fit for fantasy literature. Not only that, I kindly ask you to consider marking this title as adult content. I wouldn't feel comfortable recommending dtrpg to anyone who might get exposed to the political aspect of this book unwillingly like I did. I haven't purchased your book, and my thoughts were based on what was available for me to read in the preview. I hope you can make the most out of this feedback and I wish you good luck in your endeavors. I'm sure you have put a lot of time and dedication into it. Have a happy new year!

Thanks for your comment! The product isn't filtered as a manual choice. There are numerous far worse products that aren't filtered. Right now, there are front page titles that feature things like graphic rape, gore, and senseless brutality. This game is a far cry from that, and I have a sneaking suspicion that you don't make similar comments on those games.

This isn't fantasy literature. It's a game. If you don't think that political views are a good fit for fantasy literature, I imagine you have a hard time in a field dominated by works like Game of Thrones. This is a work of Urban Fantasy, which as a genre is highly political, and tends to deal unsubtly with current events.

But like you said, you're probably not the target audience. If its very existence makes you uncomfortable, there are plenty of other games you can enjoy!

Is there/will there be a print edition of this game? It looks awesome.
Customer avatar
Olivia H January 04, 2020 2:16 am UTC
Yes! It's gonna be a while though. Ordering proofs is really complicated for me right now. So it'll be a few months probably. I'm also trying to integrate errata and typo fixes, along with adding a couple of pages of reference material at the back.

That said, if you order the digital, you get $25 off the print price when it drops.

just curious: does my comment still get deleted if i buy the $30 pdf?
Customer avatar
January 09, 2020 8:49 pm UTC
Publishers can't delete comments. They only get deleted if DriveThruRPG decides they need to be, which may often be based on public feedback about the comment.

Which means if the PUBLISHER states that they want the comment deleted. This publisher gets anything deleted that counters her narrative. Which says a lot about her, especially after insulting someone above.

Hi there. I was originally going to put this in my wishlist as an "I'll get around to buying/reading this book someday" sort of thing, but Dillard R convinced me to buy this book immediately with their review of the product in the comments below. Thanks for the recommendation, Dillard!

I am in all seriousness very glad I gave this a second look, the game looks fun (thank you for putting up such a detailed preview) and I'm looking forward to trying this out sometime in the near future.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
