Behind the Claw

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Behind the Claw presents two complete sectors of Imperial space; Deneb and the Spinward Marches. Deneb is bordered by the Vargr Extents and the Great Rift, and has traditionally seen fierce rivalry between its powerful dukes. A long history of compromises and temporary deals has created a fragmented political situation ripe for exploitation by those with the wit and the will… and there is always the threat of corsairs from over the border.

The Spinward Marches is a border region, caught between the Aslan Hierate and Zhodani Consulate, with the tumultuous politics of Deneb at its back. It is the gateway to the Imperial frontiers and the crossroads of internal and external politics. Adventure opportunities abound between the frontier worlds of the Marches and the trade hubs of Deneb. Far from the Imperial Core, fortune awaits the bold and disaster lurks for the unwary Traveller.

Includes a huge double-sided poster map of both the Spinward Marches and Deneb sectors.

Yes. It’s available at the Mongoose site and probably elsewhere. I had mine delivered months ago.

FYI: Ardwulf's Lair on YouTube has a review of this book that may prove useful. Has the history of the 'Spinward Marches' first.

If you buy this ebook does it come with a Black and White (printer friendly) version like the Core rules?

Lots of aliens - including playable aliens (17 of them) which are pretty alien. Lots of spacecraft (18) and some other vehicles. There is an index.

I’ve struggled with a Mac Preview before. Have you tried using Adobe Acrobat? It works on that for me.

Does anyone know if this is a new writing or simply a rejiggering of the GURPS supplement of the same name? I would hate to spend the money only to find that it was essentially the same book. Thanks.

Most of these titles are at least inspired by the older editions supplements, and the topics covered are the same. While I can't give you a section-by-section report, I don't think it would be completely word for word the same as the listed credits are different. This version is written by Martin J. Dougherty, who did work in some GURPS: Traveller titles, including co-authoring this title (now he is sole author), while the layout and design of the book is completely original.

If I remember correctly GURPS Behind the Claw details the history from 1105 to 1120 and has lot about this. The book from Mongoose (I bought it directly from Mongosse, that's why I don't show up as Purchaser here) is focused on 1105 and doesn't have so much detailed history. Rules - including starships, gear for dolphins etc. - are for Mongoose New Traveller, of course. The maps seem newly made to me, they are very clear and good to read, I like them a lot and I can't wait for my pre-ordered hardcover especially because of those maps. Also GURPS Behind the Claw was Spinward Marches only, while half of this book details Spinward Marches and the other half details the Deneb Sector. The description of the Marches is focused on presenting the different Sub-Sectors. Only a few worlds in those get detailed descriptions, but those tend to be more comprehensive than in GURPS, where you get more descriptions, but less detailed.
In my opinion the books complement each other and if you are playing in the Mongoose Timeline...See more

I wish instead of general information on the Imperium this book would contain more information on nobles, mega corporations, organized crime, trade etc. in the Spinward Marches. On some parts it stays superficial.

For the price it seems fine. The book has several playable minor races, creatures, starships and also some new equipment. I feel like the book could have defined more worlds than it did but that seems to be the historical pattern with these sort of books.

The table of contents could use a pass through, the whole Deneb section is currently setup as a subsidiary of the Spinward Marches.

It would be nice if the table of contents would at least list the Sub-Sectors, too.

35.00 for a PDF is a bit steep, let alone at its original price for 59.99

There is a load of content in this book. It's worth it. It's a central release for this game's core setting.

That's why I pre-ordered the physical book from Mongoose. I only have PDFs when they are included in a physical purchase. I will NOT pay for digital.

If you pre-ordered the book, you should get the PDF for free. That's how I got mine. Just contact Matt Sprange by email at the Mongoose site, and he'll sort you out.

If they are sticking enough content into less than 300 pages to be worth $35, than I guess I had better also buy a microscope to read it. Seriously, the price is at lease double what it should be.

Depends on how you look at it. For example, two of those pages are the huge sector maps - those take a _lot_ of time, and a lot of work...

I referenced SWN solely because it's a sci fi setting with a high page count.

But you knew that and decided to snark anyway.

Taste in art is subjective, but it certainly true that Mongoose Traveller 2nd edition has raised standards in presentation, including full colour books, maps and 3D deck plans (as per public demand). This book is no exception.

I bought this last night from Mongoose. The artwork is rather good, the books are interesting and well-written. It's miles ahead of the old Deneb and Spinward Marches books and definitely not the same text.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
