Winner of the 2019 Greg Stafford Memorial Award

The timeless appeal of the legends of the Hero Wars has resulted in an enduring interest in the period.

Surviving texts, supplemented by archaeological evidence, are used here as the basis of this reconstruction of the combatants of the initial phases of that world-shattering conflict.

Focused on Dragon Pass and the surrounding regions (Peloria, Pent, Prax and Maniria), this volume presents details of the warriors, soldiers and mercenaries of the opening periods of the Hero Wars, their arms and armor, their cultures, histories and organization, the terrain they traveled, the battlefields on which they fought, their fortifications, their magic, and their gods.

Army Lists provide details of the regiments and other entities that fought in this epic conflict, supplemented by numerous illustrations of the participants.

Bonus chapters:

  • Lunar Army Strength
  • Righteous War
  • Jar-eel Marches Forth from Mirin’s Cross

Warning: adult themes - some aspects of Bronze Age warfare may be distressing.

By Martin Helsdon with invaluable assistance from Jeff Richard. Based on the mythic universe created by Greg Stafford.

I am informed that the POD is half done.

This is a monster of a book, coming in at more than 380 pages, and during its writing there was no thought of the possibility of a POD. There was an assumption that this would be a niche book and sell about fifty copies. It has now significantly exceeded that.

A PDF generated with Word is not suitable to satisfy the quality criteria.

To celebrate a year since publication, I have commissioned a new cover for Armies & Enemies. I have seen the outline, and it is... impressive. The artist is now working on inking and coloring the painting.

I regret that I have received no news about the POD.

This is an absolutely brilliant treatise, and I dearly wish I could send it back in time to myself in the early nineties.

As people may know, the companion to this book is now available: Men of the West.

Work on a POD for Armies & Enemies is progressing; as it is such a large book this is taking a great deal of time and effort. I am unable to give an estimate of when it will be available at present.

I cannot review this book , because I have a publisher account. But if I were to review it I would say it is a 5 star publication with a huge amount of detail that is worth purchasing by any hardcore Glorantha fan. Yes , 5 stars is what I would give this publication, if I was allowed to rate it. Just sayin'

As this was leaked on FB yesterday -- it is in progress.

Given the size of the book (now 384 pages including the four bonus pages at the back) this may take a while.

Afraid not. I haven't heard anything, but MOB has been in hospital. Suspect the book may be too big for POD?

https://www.drivethrurpg.com/pub_pod_cost.php does not baulk at the idea of a 380 page book. And I'd certainly be nth in the queue to order one.

The West book is now about 129 pages, 95K words. Am presently illustrating it (twelve done, twenty eight to do). With the index and all the sketches, plus other things, it might be about 150 pages.

Just left a review. The only flaws to this work are minor ones concerning the layout really, and nothing that would make me drop it from the five-star review I gave it as they are only niggles from the point of view of someone who has a little professional experience in DTP.

Off the top of my head, the title text needs to be higher on the page as it crowds the figures on either side of it; the text boxes appear crowded as there is not sufficient padding (so the text is too close to the edge); some of the colours used for textboxes are a little harsh - like the bright red - and should be toned down a little and made more earthy and coordinate with each other better rather than stick out as separate choices of colour; the illustrations have what look like visible edges or drawn-in margins to separate them from the text - this, unfortunately, makes it look like they were stuck to a printed page containing text and then scanned in, which they obviously were not. There's no reason to have any such seperation....See more

Thank you for your comments.

The book was 'laid out' in Word, and sadly several of the things you mention are artifacts of that - especially the 'borders' around the sketches, which I can't see on the screen or on the black and white printing - there's nothing I can do about them. The fuzzy edges aren't in the pictures ported in, but seem to be caused by allowing text to impinge upon the image. I may alter some of the text box colors, probably the red. The layout of the front cover was a 'design' decision and is my fault, but I wanted it to be reasonably 'tight'.

Afraid I don't have any other way of laying out a document than using the facilities in Word.

Thank you for your reply to my review. Your work is amazing.

I certainly meant no implicit or explicit criticism in my comments on the limits of the book. I greatly appreciate that much of what is know about the West of Genertela is covered or easily imagined from the base of information you already offer in the book. It is amazingly helpful (especially to me as I am working on a long term project, likely never for real publication, just myself, on Fronela).

I agree that fully including the West would also beg the question of the East, and while Dragon Pass and its neighbors have received the vast bulk of development in Genertela writings in the past 40+ years, then followed by the amount written about the West, the East has definitely received the least.

You now, however, are the premier military scientist and historian for Glorantha. Congratulations!

I'll prsume to speak for all your fans by saying, we now hope you will devote more of your life to making...See more

Hi Evan,

Yes, I had to impose boundaries, and accept that in an ideal world the book (in several volumes) might cover the West (and East). No criticism was taken, and thank you for your review.

Am currently assessing the material I have on the West, and suspect that a sixty page book might be created (but then, this book was intended to be Osprey-sized, at one point), with perhaps a year's work, so we will see. One obvious problem is that Ralios, of itself is so complex that it would be impossible to do justice to, and the Orlanthi of Jonatela are significantly distinct from the other Orlanthi.

The East is another matter...

Armies and Enemies of Dragon Pass brings back memories from reading the WRG books in the 80ies, but this is pure Gloranthan Gold. It's not a book for the beginner but any Gloranthaholic should find good use for it.

Do the army lists and characters have stats or is it more of a background book?
Customer avatar
Martin H December 04, 2019 7:31 pm UTC
CREATOR
It is systemless - the Army List entries include stats not dissimilar to those in the original 'White Bear and Red Moon'/'Dragon Pass' board game. My understanding is that the RQ GM book/campaign book will include examples of stats for soldiers etc. I did not wish to preempt that.

The book provides the arms and armor and style of fighting for each unit, so creating stats would be be difficult. It is basically a background book.

Sorry - no news yet. I am reliant upon someone else generating it. The criteria for getting a POD approved are fairly stringent, (in addition to requiring at least Electrum sales, which has been satisfied) and as a 384 page book I imagine it is a beast to convert.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
