Tales of the Sun County Militia: Sandheart Volume One

Sandheart Volume One: Tales of the Sun County Militia is a campaign framework and introductory scenario for RuneQuest games set in Sun County, Prax. Within its 100+ pages, this book contains everything you need to run a police procedural game for adventurers serving in the Sun County Militia: a description of the remote Sandheart District, its administrative centre and everyday rural life, fleshed out with local VIPs and spirit cults, stats for ten pre-generated militiamen and -women, guidelines for creating diverse parties of adventurers (including non-native “special” recruits), and a scenario – No Country for Cold Men – which pits the militia against a violent criminal gang.

The remastered edition is lavishly illustrated throughout by Mark Baldwin and Ludovic Chabant, and includes a section on Sun County Backgrounds by Nick Brooke exploring the family history of those native Sun Domers who end up serving in Sandheart. Because Sun County is notoriously xenophobic, misogynistic, patriarchal and repressive, any misfits, oddballs and non-conformists who rail against the system tend to be side-lined for advancement and wash up in places like Sandheart.

Volume Two: The Corn Dolls and Volume Three: Tradition add more scenarios for the Sandheart militia: taken together, they make up a mini-campaign that will give you many sessions of play.

Really liked Sandheart Vol 1-4 as a stand alone location for adventurers in a police/malitia unit working to enforce the rules of a Puritan Yelmalio government (it means well, honest) which would would probably drive your normal freedom loving party working as say caravan guards, members of Issaries trying to earn a honest crust or as a semi-bandit band otherwise know as "adventurers" to rage and extreme violence in very short order!

As well as giving the view from the "other side of the hill" what I also liked about Sandheart is its geographic location between Pavis/Big rubble and the lower part of the river of cradles which is the setting for Borderlands. And the easy links it provides for a GM wishing to use other RQ material they may own and wish to include in their campaign. For example Vol 1 can lead to involvement with the Pavis underworld while Vol 4 provides links to both the "garden" in the Big Rubble and to the "Employer" in Borderlands (Its...See more

Am I right in assuming that the printed book is the original 39 page pdf, rather than the remastered 103 pages?

I was looking to this product to help as a soft opening to the Setting and Rules. But right or wrong, this may not be the case. Lots of talk about sub-cults, and probably other in game references (have not read it all yet), that dont help the beginner. Not even a reference to where this info can be found. Not a complaint, but the premise could have been great as a introduction to the setting. So any setting references have a small box text to explain what it means, or how it works in the rules. This sort of product I feel is sorely missing for the game and setting.

Hi Allan, thanks for the comment. Runequest can be a steep learning curve. I presumed that most buyers of this product would have had some experience with the world and setting already - I should have made this clearer and will do so with future volumes. If you would like a few hints and tips about the system and the world in which it is set then please feel free to email me. I would be happy to help. Best wishes, Jon

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
