Hex Flower Cookbook  | Hex Flower Game Engines - an overview and some thoughts.

In this document I hope to share some of the things I’ve learnt about Hex Flower Game Engines and their design.

This document is not intended to be prescriptive, but it might be a good jumping off point if you are interested in the topic and/or want to make your own Hex Flowers.

I'm very happy for you to pay nothing for this product; and anything given to me will only be frittered away on RPG-related wares anyway. That said, even a nominal sum like 50 cents seems to bump this thing up the DriveThru charts, and it encourages me to make more things like this!

I’m using your hex flower idea to determine “Non-Player Commander” tactics in a WW2 game I’m designing. So far it has provided some really interesting yet sensible results.

Hi. On page 6 (that is, the 8th of the PDF; I hate when page numbers don't match, by the way), two of the labels for the bottom exits of the "Take the Town Temperature" flower are still referring to hexes from the "Volcano Eruption Tracker" ("Calm" and "Still"). They should be "Looks and snarks" and "Ambivalent", I suppose, or be removed like the rest.

Hi Emanuele - thanks for this. It looks like an error in the original unpolished HF (the text should be removed). I'll look to fix this at some point!

Hi, I read through the material, but still am not sure how to create those hex flowers, or whether a existing map could be converted into one.
Could you perhaps explain the whole process to me like I'm 5 year old?

Hi Barney

Thanks for the comment.

I hope to make a series of YouTube videos working through some examples soon-ish. Hopefully that would help.

I have made a wilderness Hex Flower Game Engine here: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/292935/In-the-Heart-of-the-Unknown--Procedural-Hex-Crawling-Engine

and a High Seas version here: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/274573/In-the-Heart-of-the-Sea--A-Procedural-High-Seas-Hex-Crawl

I hope to make a city and dungeon one in the near future.

So, making ‘maps’ is possible. But, they are random tables that generate maps (and not actual 2D/3D maps).

In the end the HF is like a random table, but with a memory. So the key thing to decide is what do you want to have in your random tables and then think about how these might interrelate and which are going to be the most probable. Then design the HF to do that …

Again, a video series might help ...

I asked a question on your youtube channel, but no response. Could someone help me understand how this works in a game setting? Does anyone have a video of a game session using this?

Hi Shawn

Thanks for your message. I know of at least one twitch session where a Hexflower was used (and other non-steamed games).

However, like most ‘random tables’ the action takes place ‘off screen’.

I been thinking of doing a series of YouTube videos explaining the Hexflower idea a bit more.

In the meantime, this video demos the basic Hexflower mechanic:

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
