Thorn: City of Kings

Near the Western cliffs of the Black Plateau, overlooking the wine dark sea, stands the city-state of Thorn, the last, great walled city. There is a place for everybody in Thorn. Welcome home.

Thorn is a fantasy roleplaying game set in a fictional bronze age, in the most important city in the world. Drawing from ancient Akkadia, Assyria, Babylon, and Sumer, the game is meant to be played in the city-state of Thorn and environs, but it is not meant to replicate the entirety of the ancient world.

However, these rules can be ignored and the setting can be dropped into any campaign already underway. What sets Thorn apart is the culture, intrigue, and mystical nature of the city.

Thorn is an ancient city-state, a great city-state, a towering testament to centuries of rule. It is also the last city-state of its kind. Pharaohs and senators come and go. Dynasties fade. But power and wealth remain constants in the city-state of Thorn. People come from throughout the Empire to gaze upon Thorn’s perfectly etched stone walls and the mosaics of the gods, to hear great celebrities perform, to behold the excitement of the chariot races, and to witness the Pharaoh herself.

Today, a new Pharaoh reigns over the city-state, replacing a disgraced leader hidden in exile, who drove Thorn to the edge of ruin. Although the new Pharaoh intends to return the great city to the splendor of its golden age, this past year has seen obstruction from the Senate, resulting in societal decline. People live in poverty, Thorn’s borders shrink, and the military flounders, all while foreign missionaries lure the Kisharan faithful away from the old gods.

For the common citizen of Thorn, the passing days are measured in strife as the city-state struggles to recover from the misguided rule of a selfish Pharaoh. The wealthy of Thorn rise above such suffering, insulated in equal measure by both money and power, though they face their own trials as they struggle to hold onto such things. Life in Thorn is currently comfortable for no one.

In a constant state of flux, Thorn itself is eternal — it has weathered political upheaval, natural disasters, wars, and more. And when the dust clears again, it will remain. So long as the people believe this, there is little need to correct its drifting course.

Thorn is a place of power and status, and both have a way of keeping a tower stable.

Or knock is all down like a house of cards.

“The Pharaoh is dead. Long live the eternal state of Thorn. Usher in the living gods.”

The 50 words or less description of Thorn is: A new Pharaoh sits upon the throne of the greatest city in the world, after the disastrous reign of the previous ruler nearly collapsed the kingdom. The military is a shell of its former self and a new religious movement looks to subsume the city. Cults and superstitions are rampant.

Sounds interesting, but even if you can take Thorn for the setting and adapt it to another system I'm curious about what kind of system does it use as default in the manual.

from page 16…

Basic Action Resolution
Normally during gameplay, characters can perform mundane actions without
a risk of failure. However, whenever a character wants to do something that
has a chance of failing, she must roll dice to determine success or failure. First,
the character describes what she wants to accomplish and together with the
gamemaster the stakes are determined.

In combat, this process is fairly straightforward. Attempting to hurt someone
either happens or it doesn’t. But outside of combat, the stakes are quite

The player builds a pool of dice (d6s) equal to the rating of the attribute most
appropriate for the action or task, as determined by the gamemaster. This
dice pool is rolled and each die result of a 5 or 6 is a hit. All other numbers
are discarded. Only one hit is needed to succeed at most tasks. Two hits are
needed to succeed at moderately difficult tasks. Three hits...See more

Great looking product, definitely worth my pledge. Just had a quick glance through so far but the art does a fantastic job setting the tone for the setting. Nice work.

I love the idea of this setting. What piqued me was that the product information lists it being 140 pages.

However after purchasing there were only files of 5 blank character sheets, a one page handout concerning the city, and a map of the city. Also, the preview only shows one of the character sheets nothing further. Should have stuck to my rule of no preview no purchase.

Is a larger file forthcoming? I'd like to assume there was a mistake somewhere on the publisher end, otherwise there's no way what was provided is worth $14.95.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
