Mining Guide: how to exploit Mining as Downtime in a fantasy roleplaying games context

If you like to play fantasy role-playing games, you know that downtime is the time that your characters spend between one adventure and another, dedicating themselves to personal or professional activities. Downtime can be used to improve your skills, earn money, create items or interact with other characters.

One of the most interesting and profitable activities that you can do during downtime is mining, that is, the extraction of minerals, metals, gems or other valuable materials. Mining allows you to obtain useful resources for your profession, for your equipment or for your trade. In addition, mining exposes you to adventurous and dangerous situations, such as exploring abandoned mines, encountering underground creatures or competing with other miners.

Mining Guide is a digital product that offers you a complete and detailed guide on how to exploit mining as downtime in a fantasy roleplaying games context. With this digital product you can:

  • Discover the rules and mechanics of mining, such as the skills required, the tools needed, the types of materials extracted and their values
  • Take advantage of the benefits and opportunities of mining, such as rewards, bonuses, discoveries, relationships or adventures
  • Use the dig rate, which is the digging speed depending on the character’s race. The digital product provides you with a table with the dig rates of different races present in the monster manual, such as dwarves, gnomes or kobolds.

Mining Guide is a digital product essential for all players and masters who want to enrich their gaming sessions with a new and exciting activity. Try to download it and leave a review!

Hello! This guide is a nice read and thorough without being too crazy on the brain, but a couple questions came to mind I was hoping to get clarified.

1) In reference to 'lifespan of a mine' there's mention of 2d10 and 3d10, which is basically an alternative to how to roll a 1d100 or 1d1000 if you don't have such a die. What isn't clarified (unless I missed it) is if using the 3d10/d1k requires 'triples' when you check the lifespan, or if it only needs adjacent pair of numbers (or some similar combo thereof). What is the intent in said cases?

2) in regards to smelting ore, apart from negotiation challenges (and dragging it around), does anything prevent miners from stockpiling the raw ore and then smelting it elsewhere? I feel like there's no actual reason they can't/don't, but I have limited knowledge on actual mining, so I may not be realising some complication that would make miners want to smelt the stuff at a lesser efficiency (even if they would lose out on a significant portion...See more

Hello, thanks for asking, let's solve this.
(you can also join the subreddit RPG Emporium)

1) The intent of a 3d10 lifespan roll is to increase the chance that the mine has a long lifespan. The idea is you will not need a triple to increase it, with a double being enough.

2) It depends. Shipping the ore to a local smelter may be expensive and would require lot of logistic. However, nothing prevent from doing so. The presence or not of a smelter in a local settlement depends exclusively from the campaign setting. It is just a trade off. Of course, the higher the value of the ore, the more it is conveniente to smelt in outsourcing. In narrative terms, in order to justify the presence of a huge smelter in a settlement, require the whole region to be filled with valuable ore deposits.

3) It does not empty the lifespan faster, it increases the output. The lifespan of a mine is a general concept, that depends exclusively from the combination miners/week.

4) Correct....See more

I am very confused by the Digging Chapter. In game terms, what are we actually supposed to be doing with it? I see the part about digging like 200 meters before you can actually start mining the deposit you somehow saw from so far away.. but then you still are digging to try and chase the deposit? If you're digging in these variable rates to chase the deposit, what were all the rules before that were supposed to tell you how much you get at a regular rate? I genuinely just don't understand what's going on in the digging chapter.

Hello Draconarious,
The digging rate does not influence in any way the mining output or any other variables.
I added that table in case someone wanted to build a "dungeon" while mining.
Consider the digging rates, as well as the tunnel generator, as additional tools for you to use as a something to design the mine.

I was looking around for some ruleset for coin-makers, banks and so, that I could use for my game, and found this product. I'm curious if it also include the rules for minting or is it just the rules for getting the ore of different kind of metals.

Because if it is the latter, an improvement could be to include the minting rules, and perhaps even with maps for smiths and so. I would ask before I buy the product, although I am considering both this and the merchant guide.

Helo Kim,
The mining guide allows to to mine ore and smelt the ore by means of a smelter.
The smelter varies in size, and each smelter is tuned to smelt a specific amount of ore mined per week by each miner into fine metal.

About Minting
The mining guide itself does not describe the process of turning metal into coins.
What I can tell you about this topic is that minting is a job for the blacksmith. It requires a small furnace (I assume the minting occurs with gold, silver and copper), a hammer and a special cone-shaped anvil containing the symbol you want to impress on the coin.

About Banking
The mining guide itself does not contain any detail or tip about banking or other coin-related businesses. What I can tell you is that I am working on "Running/Owning a busines on the Worlds Without Number Equipment Emporium, a product I am currently working on.

I have some questions in regard to the purpose of Digging Rate and its purpose. It seems to have no purpose other than to facilitate the Maintenance cost and some tunnel building stuff. But if you have Dwarfs and Humans digging identical stone mines (for example) it seems silly that dwarves would take the exact same time/lifespan to expend the resource but because they dig more per day their overall maintenance cost will be higher. Am I missing/misreading something and the Digging Rate is actually meant to be a multiplier to the lifespan as well or no?

Other than that though I find the product incredibly handy for being able to roll up a quick mine, or have players look for one themself. 5/5

Just an update on that, no matter how I calculate it humans (obviously) dig slower, but because of that can dig for longer because the maintenance costs build up which means they earn more income over a long period, while dwarfs super quickly end up with a massive mine, but the income is the same. Humans being 2.25% approx. more profitable. If I'm not missing anything I think it would be cool to have something in the material that evens this out.
I guess that would be something like the lifespan = A certain size in cubic feet.

Hello Dale, thanks for the comment and the interest on the subject.
I had to make a decision between a straight mine lifespan linked to the miner/week of exploitation and the landmass expressed in cubic feet related to the amount of dug material.
Opting for the week/miner approach seemed more neat. The table containing the digging rate for each race was something I did in parallel, only later I decided to include that table in the updates that followed the Mining Guide.
Indeed, as you noticed, there is no correlation between the digging rate and the lifespan of a mine. The digging rate can be used as a tool to build the system of tunnels that will become later an exhausted mine or a megadungeon.
As I said, linking the volume of a mine to its lifespan was not very practical, because not all the volume dug corresponds to useful ore, many times you have to dig wells, service tunnels, air shaft, and many other elements.
Just to consider the magnitude, the now exhausted gold mine located...See more

Hey Davide, thanks for the reply. I assumed it may have been for ease of use. Not a worry at all! The Mining Guide is a great tool to have as is for quick and easy mines. For my use I may just need to add some additional factors in (which will 100% make it a bit more clunky) to try and take into consideration that. Thanks again! :)

If you are starting it abyss then you may want to use base metals such as iron and bronze and others that are common to the material plane and could have some random table that could roll for for special material placement. Could have one roll on the random table for possible special functions/abilities. Roll too well and you may even have it gain a second ability off of that table but then also one off of a second table of only bad/weird effects

Hi Walter, thanks for bringing to my attention this detail.
It is not your fault but mine, actually an error I made when I changed the value on table 6.1
A copper mine with ore quality yields 35gp/week/miner.
Without smelting it yields 25% of 35gp, that is 8.75 gp (8gp, 7sp, 5cp).
I will make a correction of the text and you will receive notification of the update within Sunday.
Thanks again for telling me.

"...with ore quality 6..." I forgot to specify the number.
The ore quality represents the purity of the ore, in the example above we are talking about copper.
Every metal is found in ore together with other elements. The higher the density of a specific metal in the ore, the higher the quality. Also, ore quality represents purity at molecular level. Modern techniques can purify the ore to a molecular level, ancient ones didn't even know this.
I will give an historical example. Go back in time during the British-French war under Napoleon.
Napoleon wanted to build cannons employing steel alloy so that his cannons could match the resistance and quality of british cannons. What usually happened was that when french cannons tried to mmatch british kinetic power they exploded!
Why that happened? They sent spies trying to steal any possible secret hidden in the fabrication process, but nothing worked.
Later, they discovered that British employed norvegian iron to produce...See more

No, they would not want.
Controlling a vaste iron deposit of high quality implies controlling the balance of a whole region.
Now, the Mining Guide doesn't cover the technical implications of employing high quality ore, things like bonus to attack and damage rolls of weapons made with pure metals, but it is something than can be included.
The next update will include the production of alloys, special alloys, exotic alloys and possible effects on equipment like weapons and armor.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
