Meet the Vagabond…

Pierre stuck his head out of the shuttle hatch and breathed in the air of the alien planet. A warm, gentle breeze wafted a faint scent of…berries? A bloated orange sun hung in a near-cloudless sky, and the weather on this world was warm — unlike the last one, with its thirty-centimeter snowdrifts.

A gruff alien voice from behind prodded him through the hatch. Making his way down the portable stairs onto the starport landing pad, he consulted his handcomp for directions to the hostel. The device was no help; apparently, it hadn’t updated yet. He decided to ask directions of one of the natives and selected a two-meter tall fellow in what seemed to be a uniform.

“Excusez-moi monsieur,” he started, then stopped short as the being looked at him quizzically. He quickly repeated the phrase in Interstellar Common, then as best he could, asked directions to the hostel.

Even after all this time traveling, he marveled at the infinite shapes, sizes and types of the various species around him. The trip he took as a child overseas — that first kindled his wanderlust — was nothing compared to the wonders he saw and the people he met now.
