For those who Fight and those who Pray, For those who Toil and those who Enchant.

Chivalry & Sorcery

With all the medieval flavour that was loved of earlier editions now back, this truly is the definitive edition of Chivalry and Sorcery. Players can create well-rounded characters who really feel like they belong to their world. Knights wield secular power and command the battlefield, while other warriors strive to win their spurs in combat and rise to join their ranks. Magick is deep and mysterious, drawing on real-world historical detail, while Priests utter prayers and call upon the very miracles of their gods! You decide the level of magic and fantasy for your game. Run a medieval high fantasy game filled with magic, miracles and myth, - or one of gritty, low fantasy, or even pure historical simulation. The choice is yours! From fairy-tale romance to courtly love, from religious intrigue to brutal, bloody battle, Chivalry & Sorcery lets you play in just the Middle Ages you want.

Yes we do, however we dont hold the RPG licence for Lord of the Rings (which is in the 1st and 2nd ed), hence we dont fancy the likes of Tolkein Estates coming for us. It serves no commercial sense to make them free when as a business we have a new edition to support (and with the potential LOTR IP issues). If we feel early editions had something of worth we will update and include. Example Black Magick got updated and brought back as Profane Acts of Faith.

Hi,

I am currently studying PC generation, and I have a question concerning the sample character shown as an example (p 118 of the core rulebook) I have followed all the steps described on the previous page and I am stucked with the list of vocational skills (V) listed in the PC summary. It seems there have been 10 of them as it is clearly mentioned and explained in the process, but 9 of them are Combat Skills, and it is said earlier that the number of primary combat skills available is limited by the PC vocation. In the case of Aldric, if I guess correctly, his vocation is Guard, so this number is then set at 5 (p123)

Please could you tell me where i am wrong ?

Thanks for your prompt answer !

the table for this Vocation in fact contains only 8 Primary Skills (because the number of combat skills is limited to 5) so if i am correct you must select secondary skills for starting skills (which is not the case for most of the other vocation presented in the book) I think however it is quite relevant, because as it is written this vocation encompasses all the professional and i would say general fighters, so the player needs to do some specific choice to personalize its character ;-)

PUBLISHER
On page 119 under Starting skills it states "All characters begin play with ten skills and /or competencies listed for their vocation and at least six of these must be from those listed as Primary" So as long as you have 6 primary the others can be secondary. You can choose any background skills (ie fathers skills) to select as Mastered skills. Depending on the campaign if the Fighters father was a Magus then you could have a Fighter/Mage.

Hi Rafael,

Ars Bellica will focus in the military side of things. There will be rules on the war chest, raising troops and hiring mercenaries.

We have plans for a volume with the working title of C&S Medieval Economics (I do want to find a better title The Book of Husbandry?), intended to cover everything from running a peasant farm to a guilded business, a trading venture, a fief, a realm. But this is for further in the future when the Kickstarter commitments are released; we're still very much in the initial planning stages.

I intend for it to have two compatible systems - the light system for people who don't want all the details and the full system for people who do.

As well as creating some usable economic models, I intend the book to contain hooks, or at least guidance for using events as inspiration for roleplay.

Thanks for the responce, it pretty cool you have all those idea and i hope for you best you manage to get them through ^^. (And for the name, The book of Husbandry could be interesting, however, maybe trying as Ars bellica in latin ? or Book of fiefdom/Book of management thou those might be to specific for ruler and less about the all economie.)

I'm definitely open to suggestions on a name. The reason for The Book of Husbandry is that this is a name used for one medieval estate management treatise - The Book of Husbandry, or Walter of Henley's Book of Husbandry. Other estate management treaties are Senechausie and the Rules of Robert Grosseteste.

It's pretty obscure, though, and I'm not wedded to it.

I'm very on the fence about this. It looks great, and I've been looking for a setting set in the historical Middle Ages, but with maybe some hidden fantasy elements.
But I've heard this game has some real complicated rules. What kind of rules system is it? What makes it so complicated? Any examples? :)
Customer avatar
Andrew S December 22, 2019 8:00 pm UTC

I'm one of the designers.

Early editions were considered complex compared to the other games of the day.

Third edition created a new skill resolution mechanic, but had numerous exceptions.

We've kept the same basic resolution mechanic (percentile, with an additional d10 effect die), and streamlined it a bit further, removing the inconsistencies. It's not a mechanism I'd consider particularly complex.

Where there is some complexity is in character generation. You'll generate you family background, relationships with your family, the omens at your birth, special talents and defects, and some background skills. This is an addition to the usual attributes and vocational skills other systems have.

Personally, I don't mind some complexity in character generation if it helps define the character and if play is simple. Overall, and subjectively, I'd rate C&S character generation as about as complex as making a 5th level Pathfinder or 3.5 character.
Customer avatar
Eirik B December 22, 2019 8:20 pm UTC
Ah, I see. I have no problems with complex character generation systems (in fact, I prefer them like that), but I like systems that are quick to play without loosing any depth. I will give this a look. Thanks. :)

This looks like a terrific work, but $30 for a PDF is a bit rich for me. Unless you're paying a flat royalty on each book sold, I bet you would ultimately make more money (and sell many more copies) by lowering the price to $20. But that's entirely your call...I'm just giving you feedback on my own personal sticker shock. Best of luck either way. I'll wait for it to appear in a bundle or on sale.

I was a backer on this project, and so far I must say it has been one of the best in terms of complying with the deadlines. Not without blemish but the work has been outstanding and the the book is massive, with internal (and clever) hyperlinks that helps you navigate the beast.

IF you look at the tag price you might be inclined to think it may be a tad pricey BUT not only is well worth it, the page count and content value is outstanding, and when compared with other products that ask for $20 with not even half the content you really can't complain with what you get.

And the cool thing is they actually care about the product they present and will update the file promptly to correct any issue encountered, as it will happen in a +600 page beast.

It really does look fantastic and apparently you've got plenty of happy fans. To be honest, I'm the sort of gamer who actually appreciates a low page counts and simple mechanics, but that's just me. Please don't take any of this as criticism; it is just one person's reaction for you to consider. Mostly, I really want to get it but I just don't have a lot of spare cash in the XMas season.

EDIT: Having hyperlinks within your PDF is a very nice touch. I wish more publishers did that.

No issues whatsoever, Raymond. No game is for everyone.

If you're looking for medieval games with low page counts and simple rules, may I recommend Reedwater, by Anderian Designs - FATE-based mechanics in the 13th century Holy Roman Empire (disclaimer: designer Andy Cowley is also one of the C&S design team).

I'd also bring Sagas of the Icelanders to your attention. They've absolutely no connection to us, but it's a beautiful game, based on the settlement of Iceland using the Apocalypse World Engine. It's very much in keeping with the mood of the original sagas.

Both are available on drivethru.

Your best bet for value will be to wait until the hardbacks are out in March and claim your bricks and mortar PDF.

And we have the PDFs for 4th edition (aka Rebirth) on this site for free. There is considerably more in the 5th edition, with many refinements, much more medieval background, and gorgeous layout. But if you want to taste C&S, that's your lowest cost option. ;)

And that is only true if you believe that you just pay for printing costs and that writing, editing, layout, and art generally are to be provided for free.

I am not connected to the designers or the project in any way, but I guess that some understanding of the general effort and costs behind the scenes could help to understand the price tag. I guess that just asking the writing staff had helped, too. ;-)

Writing, editing, layout, and art are not provided for free - otherwise books would be a hell of a lot cheaper then they are. But unless I can hold the physical object in my hands I wont pay for it. Digital documents, downloaded movies/music feels to much like renting and not owning a copy.

If a PDF is provided as part of a physical purchase, or if a friend feels like wasting money on one fine (like they foolishly did with this).

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
