In the Heart of the Unknown – contains procedural Encounter, Terrain and Weather Engines for Wilderness Hex Crawling.

It is in a similar vein as ‘In the Heart of the Sea’, which is a procedural High Seas ‘Hex Crawl’.

Basically, in In the Heart of the Unknown there are three 'game engines' in the form of Hex Flowers. One engine drives navigation and encounters. The other two are related to terrain and weather conditions.

Each time you enter a new HEX, you procedurally determine what is in the new HEX starting from the last HEX result. So, Hex Flowers are sort of like a random table but with a memory

I'm very happy for you to pay nothing for this product; and anything given to me will only be frittered away on RPG-related wares anyway. That said, even a nominal sum like 50 cents seems to bump this thing up the DriveThru charts and encourages me to make more things like this!

Hello,

First of all thanks for those little flowers smelling the parfume of adventure.

Should I consider each HF to be independent, both in terms of temporality and dice roll?
i.e. I roll for each HF separately and one HF could see multiple rolls while the other one roll each.

This leads to the issue, I face actually, how am I supposed to use the rivers and roads. Should I consider that the PCs stay on the road/river as long as they please and for each weather roll, I roll to see if I have a double?

I know, reading your blog and your "overview and thought" document, that I should/could/must take some liberty with what you present in your documents, but I want to, first, understand your rules' concept.

Regards,

Roland.

Hi Roland

Thanks for your comment and I’m glad you like these Hex Flowers.

The way I intended this to work (but as you note people can use these as they see fit) is that each “turn” the user rolls on each of the three HFs.

So 2D6 for encounters, a second set of 2D6 for weather, and a third set of 2D6 for terrain each "turn".

Now, if you think weather is too changeable under this set up, then you could roll once say every three “turns”. Same could apply to terrain, where you could roll say every other "turn". Personally, I think it’s fun to roll on each of the three HFs every time. A “turn” being a unit of travel worthy of a change in circumstances i.e. which warrants a new roll.

Roads and rivers are interesting. As you can imagine, the tension I faced when making this Game Engine was trying to get the whole concept on just one page, but also having enough info for people to figure out how to use it. Rivers...See more

Thanks for all those precisions.

If I may suggest something. Maybe you should move the Encounter list to a second page, that way you have more space for rules and that also leave more space for the GM to add notes and information for each encounter in the list. I think it is a win-win situation, more space for the rules, more space for encounter descriptions.

Thanks for this.

Maybe at least I could make a 1-page and a 2-page version of this to suit different preferences.

I'm also thinking of bringing out a booklet on 'In the Heart of the X', i.e. bringing together these various different Hex Flowers I’ve made.

This could be the time to make this kind of edit – the HFs on one page, and the text on the facing page?
:O)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
